Really stupid question from iPod newbie

I was wondering how I can get my new iPod Nano to work with multiple computers.

I have different sets of songs on different PCs. However whenever I plug my iPod in a PC, the iTunes software always ask me:

"your iPod is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs playlists on this iPod with those from this library"?

And of course, I don't want to. But then, how exactly do I move songs that are available on one PC but not the other, onto my iPod, without completely wiping out the library that was already on the iPod?

Is there a way to just drag and drop individual songs from a PC onto an iPod? Without going thru the iTunes interface?

your ipod can only be linked to one computer....but if you dont want it to auto update go into ipod options and change it. then you can just drag and drop. but only from one computer

Really? That's just retarded. Why do they make it so difficult?

If there's no way to get around this I might have to return my iPod. I have too many PCs and my music isn't organized all onto one PC....it'll be an impossible situation for me to deal with.

short answer: no

long answer: yes, but not with itunes. you will have to use software like foo_pod plugin with foobar2000 or anapod explorer. anapod explorer is relatively drag and drop I believe.

actually it's not retarded. There is actually quite a bit of two way interaction between the ipod and itunes. if you had different libraries on each computer with some same and some different songs, it would be impossible for itunes to keep everything synced, thus making syncing actually impossible.

Not to mention it would allow someone to take their ipod around to everyone's computer and download/play all of their protected music.

try foo_pod or anapod explorer, but I have a feeling you are going to see exactly why apple tied it to one computer in itunes. managing libraries on multiple computers and your ipod (or any dap) is a nightmare.

not true. i can connect my ipod to multiple computers.. so can my dad and my roommates.. so i know its not just mine..

you just have to make sure that when you connect it to the new computer.. if it prompts you to auto update.. just say no.

oh really?????? interesting. ive always just enabled the hard disk and then drag and drop songs on the hard drive. then put them on my original computer and open them in itunes.

Oh ok, I set the iPod to manual mode and now I can just copy/paste individual songs to the iPod from the PC. Problem solved.

Thanks guys. :)

It's one of Apple's way of appeasing the record companies.
