I can't believe no one has mentioned In Flames ! Not just from a metal perspective, but a rock perspective, Reroute to Remain is the best cd I've heard in quite some time. The entire cd is a masterpiece. Anyone reading this owes it to himeself to check out Cloud Connected at the very least.

Yes, I love In Flames as well, but lemurs said she didn't like the Death vocals, so everyone started recommending Power Metal. Also, you can't mention In Flames without mentioning Soilwork. They've been slipping a little lately with their latest album, but it's still pretty good. But I recommend A Predator's Portrait and Natural Born Chaos at the very least.

Also, In Flames has finished recording and mixing their new album. No word on a release date, though. Arch Enemy's new album leaked out within the past few days, and it's pretty awesome. Check it out if you haven't already.

Anders is the most dynamic singer I've heard in over a decade. The fact that the man can scream is irrelevant because he can sing as well. Check out his side project Passenger. Are you sure In Flames has already recorded another album? Soundtrack To Your Escape was just released a few monts ago. It hasn't even been a year yet (I don't think), I did hear Passenger is coming out with a new cd though.

Cut that I can't listen to screaming vocals thing. Some bands use it very well and it is something you'll get used to. Otherwise you'll be missing some of the best metal available.. Your taste in music should not be limited by superficial elements like that but the actual composition and how the elements fit together. Outside a few bands, power metal gets old fast. Iced Earth and Stratovarius are decent, Blind Guardian's old stuff is OK, they're just too cheesy now.

Some very good records (of the more accessible type):

Slayer - Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, Hell Awaits
Dark Tranquillity - Everything (esp. the gallery, mind's I, projector)
At the Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease, Slaughter of the Soul (though I prefer their earlier stuff)
Dissection - The Somberlain, Storm of the Light's Bane
Metallica - Master of Puppets
In Flames - Whoracle , The Jester Race
Samael - Passage, Ceremony of Opposites

If you would like to get into death metal then:
Sentenced - North From Here
At The Gates - The Red In The Sky Is Ours / With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness
Cryptopsy - None So Vile
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the sick
Immolation - Close to a World Below
Deicide - Legion
Carcass - Descanting the insalubrious
Vader - Black to the Blind

would be a good starter set

Soundtrack to Your Escape was released in April '04 (and what a fantastic disc it is *eagerly awaiting Come Clarity*). I hope you have the digipack version (I use the album cover as my avatar), as it includes a pretty good bonus track.

I didn't mention In Flames either because the thread starter prefered clean vocals (which is the best way to get into metal IMO; after having your power metal fix you explore, which is what I and many did).

I find the disconnect between how silly most metal bands sound/look and how seriously they take themselves quite amusing. :D But if it's your bag, who am I to troll? Oh, too late for that I guess.

Well with that little gremlin as your avatar, I think it's actually your duty to invade this thread and post something useless

Type O Negative, Megadeth, Dio, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, Anthrax, Danzig

With pretty much all of these bands, it's recommended that you first check out their first couple of albums rather than their latest releases. They tend to be better in my opinion, although a few of these artists still write good stuff (type o negative definitely)

None of these bands are power metal, but they do adhere to the vocal style stipulation:

Devil Doll (though really only loosely metallic)
Empyrium
Falkenbach
Sculptured
Mägo de Oz
Doomsword

However, I would suggest learning to appreciate the less-clear vocal styles, for the world of metal is extremely limited if you don't.

Whoever mentioned Agalloch, I second that. Both Pale Folklore and The Mantle are absolute masterpieces.

Also, as already mentioned, Pain Of Salvation is incredible. I have to disagree with morbidaza though, I think their best album is The Perfect Element, Part I.

Also, I have to mention Anathema. They're not powermetal, but they deserve a mention in this thread (well, every musicthread actually). They're hard to classify, but I'd say they're a mix of doom, prog and death metal. Pretty much any album by them is a masterpiece, but my favorite is Judgement. Incredibly powerful album, very emotional.

My final suggestion is Ephel Duath. They're an Italian prog/avant garde band, with some rock and jazz infused into most of their songs. Quite an astonishing mix. Painter's Palette is a very complex album, but I'm sure that you'll love it after a few spins. Just give it time to sink in.

I cant say enough good things about Pain of Salvation. I still prefer Remedy Lane to the older albums.

Opeth is still my favorite though. The music is amazing if you can get past throaty vocals. I love the contrast of metal to acoustic and clean vocals. Its hard to say what album to start with, I guess I would go with Blackwater Park.

Wrong. Vocals are a huge part of , the biggest part IMO,the experience. Vocals where someone screams or does death metal growls the whole time turn me right off. I may end up missing out on good instrument work, but if I can't stomach listening to the vocals that accompany it, then so be it.

Just start with Priest's Sad Wings of Destiny and you'll be off the power metal trip immediately and probably forever. Then hit the rest of their catalogue and enjoy the ride (skip Jugulator and Demolition though.)

Good to see another PoS fan here, and I agree on Remedy Lane as their best.

But yes, Opeth NEEDS NEEDS NEEDS to be heard by everyone. It takes time for some to get past the death vocals, especially for those not used to them (I think they're fantastically executed), but once they do, once it finally clicks, virtually everyone I've talked to goes some thing like "Oh...wow...thats incredible..." and they're hooked. Just a truly timeless band.

xXCHAOSXx...I guess you missed the part about no screaming...but yes, I will attest to the fact that Lamb of God is one of the sickest(in a very good way) band's currently playing.

I just thought I would let you few that care know, Im listening to The Grand Conjuration from Ghost Reveries.

I cant take the wait.

I made this exact topic about 6 months ago and admittedly I didn't really check out any bands. Lots of metal just seems very lame to me although quite superior musically compared to other genres. I would suggest you check out:

Winds: go to their site, link below, and check out a couple songs of theirs on the discography. They are a very tight band with some beautiful music. Their site is awesome too.

EDIT: Oh by the way what do you guys think of Green Carnation. I've begun showing an interest in them. That one album with just the one song (and over 150 tracks and 30 musicians) sounds like it has amazing potential.

I don't know if they qualify as metal or hard rock, but Monster Magnet is pretty okay in my book.

Oh, and Motorhead. Not only are they the fastest hard rock/metal band in the world, but their lead singer Lemmy has a lot of boils on his face.

Ah thanks dude!

*slight derail*

I'm going on a trip soon and I'm looking for some great new music to check out. I think I might pick up this and a King Crimson album since I've been meaning to buy "In the Court of the Crimson King" for awhile now. The other albums I was looking at were:

Virgin Black- Sombre Romantic
How Like A Winter - Beyond My Grey Wake
Winds- Reflections of the I
Wolf's Eyes- Burned Mind
Emerson, Lake and Palmer- self-titled
King Crimson- In The Court Of The Crimson King

Based on this is there any other recommendations you might have? Hopefully you can catch where I want to go with my next few purchases, something sort of epic, experimental, ambient, but with great songwriting. Something with that 'complete' package. Or does Green Carnation's album satisfy this?

Amen.

I second this opinion.

Sounds like Devil Doll might be right up your alley. They're a heavily orchestrated band, but do have a decent bit of metal infused within their music. All their albums are spectacular, though I feel Dies Irae is their magnum opus.

Yeah and you gotta love someone who locked themselves blindfolded in a box with a snake during a recording session to capture the sound of "fear" in his voice. Mr Doctor = insane

Check out Mayhem as well from some nice drum action....and read the bands bio whiel you are at it.

Also check out Immortal...they have the greatest music videos ever.

How does it sound??? I've heard people claim that this cd is like the culmination of everything Opeth has done up to this point.

most of the guys have covered all of the bases, so i don't have anything new to add

except i've noticed a disturbing lack of Manowar in this thread

true power metal, lol

Its hard to tell, its just a rip from Sirius radio broadcast. I will say I like it though, and did on the first listen, which is rare. Unfortuantely it has an "Opeth" riff but quickly changes to a repeating muted chug, it works but the first riff was good. Keyboards like on Damnnation, amazing drumming, and a wicked solo about midway through the song. Theres actually more clean vocals than throaty, its more of a spoken word type than his usual singing.

Its a good preview of the sound of the album, and I can say Im not disappointed.
