Recommend me songs only popular in your country

the song of your people

If you want to be heard by many people then it is recommended to sing in english! If you're not from an english speaking country then it is unlikely to see a song travelling the world if it uses your native language.

Example: (I only know about this one because I watch SciFi Debris and it is used for TNG Episodes)
Nena 99 Luftballons
english version - 99 red balloons

There are exceptions but those are likely to be of the past, not recent and very rare.
I want to learn about music that is only popular in your region, originally I wanted to be specific about it and ask for Japanese songs (would still appreciate some tipps on that) but why limit the possibility of hearing new and intersting music.
There is something to it not understanding the lyrics and if you could include one or two lines about the content of the song/s, would be nice. Also would be nice not to post huge lists and only 2 or 3 songs but it's not a rule.

2 from Germany

Vicky Leandros - Ich liebe das Leben 1975

Ignore the video, it's just the only video I could find with semi-good audio quality.
Vicky Leandros, greece singer had some pretty large hits in germany in the 60-70-80s, the song is about breaking up in a relationship and not falling into a depression (I think) Ich liebe das Leben - I Love Life (word by word translation). There maybe versions of this song in other languages, I don't know about that them if they exist.

Another song, and probably a bad example is

Herbert Groenemyer - Alkohol 1984

While extremely popular in the 80's he was constantly made fun of because of his voice and is not really a great singer. The song is sarcastic take on the use of alcohol, maybe even alcohol addiction.

I'm not really well informed about recent music, maybe somebody else can chime in but I believe these two songs where not popular outside of germany.

Afaik groenemyer ist the mist successful german singer.

And pretty popular is Helene Fischer and her "atemlos durch die Nacht". -_-

Koii suruuu fooortune coooookie

This isn't 'my country' since I'm a filthy gaijin but I think most Japanese people know Natsu Matsuri. Though, they probably know the inferior Whiteberry version which I don't want to link so listen to that Jitterin' Jinn version instead.

I can't think of anything for Canada and if I could it would be embarrassing garbage. Maybe a Serial Joe song (lol)

99 Luftballons is an extremely popular song, it's the complete opposite if what this thread's about.

Anyway, if we don't include songs from local artists, it's probably this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sNdopoF-hTg

I've never seen anyone but Dutch people mention this song.

But is it the english or the german version that is popular? I honestly don't know but thought it would be the english version.

EDITx2: Also I might have articulated myself wrong, but I'm looking for songs that are popular in their respective native language, not english songs that are popular in non-english speaking countries or known over the entire world.

I personally only know the German version.

I think in the case of Nena, the German version is popular, but only because the English version had such great success.

on the contrary - not understanding their lyrics is a blessing.

Heh, I'll have to take your word on that :)

I love this idea, digging some of the songs I heard! Here are 2 ITALIAN popular songs:

Prendila Così

This is an old classic from Lucio Battisti and Mogol. I chose this beacuse it featured many american musicians and I love the slow mood. "Prendila Così" is about a married man in love with another woman who knows that their sceret relationship can't go on. The interesting thing is that it's both tragic and hopeful (the difference between verse and chrous is big), just like relationships outside marriage and you can feel a unique love in it.

Luna Piena

This is an old italian Rap song. It's not that popular but it was important back then because it opened the way for "italian rap" to grow. Fabri Fibra is now a big star here, and Rap / Hip-Hop are the biggest genre for younger people, there are indeed many bad writers/singers but fuck, old Fabri Fibra is my favorite rapper ever (and I love american hip-hop).

Cro is pretty big in Germany, but I haven't heard anything about him being famous anywhere else. He makes some weird mix between rap and pop music, but it works pretty well. I personally don't really follow his music so you have to google the songs yourself, but whenever I hear his music in the radio I like it decently enough.

EDIT: He also wears a panda mask and so far pretty much no one knows who he is. By own accord he is recognized maybe once a months. So even with all his fame he seems to have stayed a down-to-earth kind of guy. I like that.

To be honest I dont know how popular these songs are out of Australia.

Can you feel it

Well, at least Shulk is REALLY feeling it :P

Australian metal (and lots of sub genres of it) are quite big in Australia. Also Australian Hip Hop is growing quickly although Americans seem to not like it much because of our accents.

I'd recommend checking out Bliss n Eso and The Hilltop Hoods for Hip Hop! Most Australian metal seems to get a lot of worldwide appeal these days so it's hard to recommend any bands that you probably haven't heard of.

I think that is also a reason why she is so popular, even with young people.

and here a link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZkejDqTuSM

99 Luftballons is an extremely popular song, it's the complete opposite if what this thread's about.

I think it took a long time before it crossed the German borders. I remember discussing with a German friend at the time about local music, 99 Luftballons was quite big at the time there and he asked me if I knew about it, but I had never heard it, and wouldn't before several years.

It's a bit hard for me to find examples that aren't too cheesy, but I'll try. It's mostly pop.

Que je t'aime (pop, Johnny Halliday). Not really complex lyrics actually, it's about a guy telling how much he loves a woman. It starts with poetic images (comparing her blonde hair to wheat fields, or looking at the sun playing with her curves) and ends with strong allusions to the sexual act. My mother told me she was crazy of that song when she was younger, even if it was banned from her school. :P

From Jean-Jacques Goldman, my favorite French songwriter, two interesting songs :
Envole moi, it's about the frustration of a guy living in poor suburbs, seeing how low his chances are from getting out of there, but wanting to get out of it by all means. Yeah the singer's voice is "special", you have to get used to it, but it matches the style IMO (there was a recent cover of the song by younger artists, and they butchered it).
A nos actes manqués, easier to listen to. It tells about the missed opportunities we all remember in our lives, things we've said and done, or not, time lost, songs not sung... It got a recent cover too by another French singer, which was surprisingly decent.

Place des Grand Hommes (Patrick Bruel), French teenagers (mostly girls) were crazy about him in the 90s, it was like a small Beatlesmania. It's one of the rare songs of his I like, it's about people who were at school together and made the promise to meet again 10 years later. The main character is preparing himself to go to that meeting and is having second thoughts.

Aux sombres héros de l'amer (Noir Désir). I have absolutely no idea of the meaning of the lyrics, and I don't think anybody does. :P The title is some sort of double pun that doesn't really make much sense either, "sombre héros" = "dark heroes", but sounds like "sombrero", and "l'amer" = "the Bitter", but sounds like "la mer" = the sea. L'homme pressé was quite popular too. Doesn't make much sense either, although one can get it's about some "important" guy and his role in a decadent society.

Nah, it was a massive worldwide hit when it was released, reaching the number 1 spot all over the world.

I've never heard Italian Rap music, despite not understanding a single word I still love the sound of the spoken language. Very interesting.
About Italian music, can you name a popular female singer I should look up on the net? (of course I know about Gianna Nannini)

Let me sing to you

the song of my people:

This could be a trailer of the upcoming Uncharted movie
(is there a movie coming?)

Mina is indeed our beast: sexy, funny, smart and vocally amazing.

One of her classics: Se telefonando

If you want something more modern This is a remake of an italian rock song, her voice makes it magical.

Another famous italian singer I'm proud of is Elisa, she writes her albums in english with the ecception of few italian songs wich end up being her biggest hits in Italy. But Labyrinth is still badass.

Rammstein seems to have large fanbase who speak no German. Probably helps that a few of their songs are in English. :)

I'm a big Rammstein fan and here in Mexico they're pretty popular too. Sad thing, most of the people who call themselves “fans” think they're nazi and even wear shirts with the swastika and stuff like that. It's pretty sad to see a lot of people like that whenever there's a concert.

I'm American, but Frances Yip's Shanghai Bund is quite popular in Hong Kong and I think maybe even China. It is the theme song to a 1980s show, but I'm quite sure anyone in Hong Kong who hears even the opening notes would recognize it immediately.

I think Yip's vocals are superb. Even though the song has been covered by other singers and also in Mandarin, the original Cantonese of Yip is, in my opinion, the best.

Thanks for that, I really like the Mina song.

Great song and a cool name, like a Bond villain ;)

This sounds like the evolution of Thunderdome music.... and you know what, I somehow like it!

Jenni Vartiainen, a really awesome young-ish woman. She is really awesome on live stage and has got multiple rewards for it. The song's name is "Suru on kunniavieras", which means "sorrow is an honorary guest". The song has some strong Kalevala (the Finnish national epic) vibes

Eppu Normaali. A bit older band that has been making music for a long time. Very well known and respected here. The song's name is "Murheellisten laulujen maa, which translates to "the country of sorrowful songs".

I'm from the US and am old enough to remember when that song first hit and I had no idea that there was an English version.

Nice song and nice video, thanks!

UK - Remember You're a Womble

If you visit a British* pub and want to be instantly popular start singing this. They'll love you.
*apart from London. They don't like people exceeding the personal space limit.

Now I have the urge to watch The Fraggles.

Basque Country

Ezekielen Prophezia (1980) and Ustela (1983), both by Itoiz, a great band that wasn't very well known outside the Basque Country itself. Lau teilatu (1978), probably the most famous (within the Basque Country) Basque ballad.

I like the last 2 songs, thanks.
