Synopsis
Red Dwarf is a British sci-fi comedy series that follows Dave Lister who awakens 3 million years after being put into cryo stasis on the mining space ship Red Dwarf.
His only companions aboard the gigantic space ship are Rimmer, his former supervisor who is resurrected as a hologram by the ship’s AI Holly, and Cat a descendant of his pet cat whose species evolved from cats into humans during the 3 million years since his stasis.

During their travels through space they meet up with Kryten, a service mechanoid who would later join the crew after being re-formatted.

The crew mainly roam around space, getting into adventures and working to keep Red Dwarf running, all the while bickering among themselves.

Apparently a new season was hinted at about last year. Not sure if anything came of that. Personally I'd say I prefer Brittas, though it's a bit of a rare commodity. Can't find anywhere to watch it, be it legal or not. Besides outright buying the DVD box set, I guess.

But yeah, RD is cool though I haven't really been too amazed by the newer seasons. Could be because I'm older now and barely anything even makes me smile on TV these days.

For people in the US, there was an American pilot made that never aired (here it is in terrible, damaged eyesight quality):

It's generally considered terrible by anyone who has seen the original. I think it wasn't great, but it wasn't that bad either considering some of the other stuff you could find on TV back then.

Swirly thing alert!

1-6 def best, s6 first 3 episodes I can rewatch seasonally, might have to do that next chance.

Music was also awesome, tongue tied is amazing and the rimmer song legendary.

Hey, Red Dwarf! Good to see some quality british comedy getting rep on GAF. I marathoned my VHS Boxset of it so many times back when I were a lad.

The pre-starbuggers stuff is legendary. Didn't like it quite as much when stuff started getting all complex (nanomachines, son!), but as a whole it's great and even the later stuff has its moments.

Worse than playing away at Leeds.

VHS and BBC released stuff was alright to watch back in the day (90s for me) in 4:3, although there were Japanese copies of much better quality. Wouldn't mind seeing a Japanese parody of it, they've had a following there since the beginning.

All in all, a 100 per cent successful trip.

Bluray delayed till January but has a Smeg load of extras.

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2018/10/red-dwarf-blu-ray/

Us Dwarfers were pretty disappointed to hear that the Blu-Ray box sets of series 1-8 have missed their December deadline and will instead be arriving in January 2019, but the Despair Squid has left us something in the form of brand new box art.

If you're thinking "this is worse than playing away at Leeds," take heart – the box art is actually really cool, with a new retro/outrun kinda style that we really like.

Short article with more news about the extras and a lot of decent messages from red dwarf fans.

How we made Red Dwarf

‘The BBC’s head of comedy said it would only work if there was a sofa. We said spaceships don’t have sofas – and he said it won’t work then’

NIce piece from Doug Naylor with other interviews.

I was more or less raised on Red Dwarf, absolutely love it :messenger_grinning_smiling:
Robert Llewelyn's fussy, uptight performance as Kryten is some A-grade material.

Edit: That feeling when you posted in the thread months ago and forgot. I still love it!

if you have not read the books - get them ASAP - there are three I think and they are perfect for fans.
Oh yeah, the books! They're pretty good, though if memory serves were written independently by Grant and Naylor, which makes for some slightly weird canonicity.

series 1-6 of red dwarf is great but after that it really went downhill. There are some good episodes here there but most was bad, some of it really bad.

Haven’t actually seen the most recent episodes hope they are good.

They're a vast improvement over the mostly awful Back To Earth and slightly better than most of series VIII (I like series VII). They're a long way from classic Dwarf but passable enough as a tribute act which doesn't disgrace the originals in the same way modern Simpsons does, though the budget limitations are obvious and it's a lot more sitcom-y. Classic Dwarf worked for me by taking the ideas and environments of a great science fiction show and roughing them up with brash, working class humour and spontaneity. In the Dave series, the class element is entirely gone (it faded as the show progressed anyway, even at the end of the classic era) and the jokes feel a lot more planned and forced. Fortunately, some still land and the cast bounce off each other enjoyably enough to hang out with. Series XI and XII are a lot better than X, although Can Of Worms and Timewave are stinkers. Officer Rimmer (terrible ending aside, which is a problem for most of the new episodes) is the closest to a classic era episode in style and laughs. If you keep your expectations low, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Red Dwarf Special Announced

OFFICIAL: The Boys from the Dwarf are returning to Dave in 2020!

The wait is over. We're delighted to announce that Red Dwarf will return to Dave next year for its first ever feature-length special. Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn are back as Lister, Rimmer, The Cat and Kryten, in an all-new story written and directed by Doug Naylor and produced by Baby Cow Productions.

jsYDwtr.jpg

"I'm really excited to get back on board with the boys from the Dwarf," says Craig. "I can't wait to discuss Robert's prostate problems, Chris Barrie's hip replacement and have a proper look at Danny's new dentures whilst they marvel at the agelessness of the Charles physique. I will surely require the services of a chiropractor after dragging these doddering misfits through what promises to be our most epic adventure yet. Dave Lister, the human race's last hope in a hostile universe. God help us. And may the Dwarf be with you."
"I'm absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity of making more Red Dwarf," adds Doug. "UKTV have been a never-ending source of support and encouragement since we first started working together ten years ago. Can't wait to start shooting a format that I don't think has ever been done before. Smoke me a kipper, we're back and not just for breakfast."
The special will be filmed on location and at Pinewood Studios in front of a live studio audience, and is produced by Richard Naylor. Christine Langan is executive producer for Baby Cow.

And as if that wasn't enough, we've got something else exciting to announce, too. To celebrate the return of the small rouge one to our screens, UKTV has also commissioned a series of retrospectives - three 60-minute documentaries which will offer fans the definitive story of the show from day one right up to now. These retrospectives, produced by North One, will include a wealth of rare and unbroadcast material, as well as new interviews with cast and crew.

"Our relationship with Red Dwarf has been incredibly fruitful and satisfying so far," says UKTV's Head of Scripted Pete Thornton, "and it's been a real pleasure to see the cast and crew fully committed and seemingly enjoying themselves more than ever in the run up to this latest production. We've been talking to Doug and the team about how to take Red Dwarf forward and the special clearly offers us an exciting next step. It's going to be a proper event in the history of the series."

"I am a huge, life-long fan of Red Dwarf and I still re-watch it and re-read the books regularly to this day," adds Luke Hales, Dave's channel director. "So it goes without saying that it gives me huge pleasure to be a part of the team this time around. I am as excited about this one as a viewer as I am in my role as channel director on Dave. The episodes we've made for the channel so far have been brilliant, and what a way to welcome it back too, with a feature-length special and three-part look back at the show's history. We at the Dave team literally cannot wait to bring this huge treat to our viewers."

So then, what about the audience filming? Well, it's taking place across two dates, on Friday 6th and Friday 13th December. To get your hands on tickets, you need to head on over to Lost in TV and enter the ballot for tickets - as with the last series, tickets will be allocated by way of a random draw, ensuring that it's not just a case of first-come first-served once the link goes live!

The ballot opens at 12pm today (Friday 18th October) and will close at midday on Monday 21st. So you haven't got a ton of time to get in there, but it should be plenty of time to ensure you get your name in even if you're not in the initial rush! Successful applicants should be notified by Friday 8th November, and as with Series XI and XII, there'll be no overselling - if you've got a ticket, you're in the audience!

Phew. So there you have it: brand new Red Dwarf, and it's going into production very soon. We'll bring you all the latest sneak peeks and updates from behind the scenes as soon as things kick into gear. Excitement Mode: ENGAGED.

It's proper British humour and it really has aged very very well. I can't recommend it highly enough. Up there with Father Ted, IT Crowd, One Foot In The Grave, etc.

If anyone isn't aware (and because I'm currently relistening to them), the Audiobooks are smegging brilliant, and read by Chris Barry/Rimmer, who does frankly uncannily accurate impressions of the rest of the cast.

"Has anyone ever told you that you are a disgusting, pus-filled bubo who has all the wit, charm and self-possession of an Alsatian dog after a head-swap operation?"

-

"And you rebuilt him - gave him something to live for!"
"Not really. We just hosed him down and gave him a hat."

-

"How long, you mad goth bastard?"

-

"Ah...smug mode!"

I could go on. One of the all time great comedies.

Sad to hear that the Grant Naylor fued may prevent any more Red Dwarf stuff being made. The new stuff isn't as good but it is still worth a watch, if just for old times.
Yeah this is how I feel, the "true" Red Dwarf ended after Season 6. Since then it's been "different", the actors have still got it obviously have a blast making it still but the plots and writing are just, eh, especially when they try and write in heavy lore stuff which makes the characters retconned to be worse.

Haven't watched Red Dwarf in years, but it was quality back in the day. Loved the chemistry between the cast.

Amazing show, and incredibly funny. But I always find the last couple seasons/movies are a little depressing seeing the cast get so much older, but still go nowhere in life. I'd love for there to be one last movie giving them a final happy ending, and not just seeing the boys from the dwarf losers forever.
