Red Orchestra 2 Beta is Now Available on Steam

I got into one game and got a few kills, then exited to change some settings, and now it just crashes at the server browser :(

There's something wonderfully satisfying about bringing a guy up in your ironsights, firing once, and killing him.

No other shooter can recreate that feeling.

I love this game so far. It's taking a little time to get used to the maps and find out where good spots are for my MG or AT rifle, but the one map is riddle with 405986 riflemen set up shop in windows that it's hard to even advance out of spawn. That map definitely needed more flanks.

The apartment map I really liked though and the tank map is marvelous. I looked back at how many tanks were rolling out and it amazed me.

Wait, there's tank maps?

Shit I must've been playing on an infantry only server.

If only the damn server browser worked. ;_;

The server browser works for me but it temporarily freezes every time it adds a server to the list but then it becomes functional once the refresh is over. I didn't need the fix for it that TWI suggested either.

Yea, there's one snowy tank map that is nothing BUT tanks and it's a blast. Nearly 40 people in the room can all have their own tanks with AI players if they want so it made the battles even bigger and you didn't have to rely on randoms if you didn't want to.

Tank map was lagging like hell for me :(

But otherwise, outside of a few bugs here and there, the game is glorious.

I can't play. SP takes me from the loading screen back to the difficulty select every time and the server browser won't find servers. :(

edit: apparently a problem with masterservers.vdf. works now. :)

edit2: until it crashed :(

SP isn't in the beta (I don't know why they didn't gray it out) and there's a fix for the browser earlier in this thread which will help you find games. Note that you might still crash a few times in the server browser if other people are correct.

Edit: Here's the link: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2090142

Loving this game. As has been stated, the feel of the one shot kill is wonderful.
Looks great too but I am confident the devs will sort the bugs out.
Well done to them for bringing this game out within all the COD clones.

Played a couple of quick rounds and so far so badass.

It's Red Orchestra but just better. The shooting in particular feels a lot better then vanilla RO.

Well, I love it so far - it is incredibly intense, difficult, challenging, and brilliant. Not sure how well it will do commercially - while it's an amazingly good game, I don't think that a general audience will necessarily understand what Tripwire is trying to do, especially if they think 'FPS = BF/CoD'.

I certainly hope I'm wrong - I'm sure the game will have a hardcore legion of fans, but I can see how the complexity of the game could alienate people who aren't terribly attuned to this kind of thing.

But, at the same time, Tripwire have stood their ground and made the game that we wanted them to make - it hasn't been watered down or cheapened, and it is an extremely worthy successor to Red Orchestra.

Beta downloaded, day off from work, dying all over the place...feels good man!

Game feels good so far. Tweaking stuff and got a couple of rounds in but now the server browser crashes me to desktop and quick game doesn't find games so I'll try the fix. Game runs pretty smooth on my x4 965 and 5850. But will probably tone it down a notch for super smoothness. Disabled bloom. Liked the war filter but it kind of made axis hard to spot in places.

Sniping with the anti-tank rifle is amazing.

Aim at enemy -> pull trigger -> enemy explodes, blood spurts everywhere

This game feels way too hardcore for me. I'm constantly fucking dying, I have no idea where everyone is coming from and after a hour I already want a refund.

Well it's been in the Steam top 5 seller list for a while now and one dev said it's had a lot of preorders compared to some other big games out there so I think it's doing quite well. The price point only helps them out even more since people will be more inclined to impulse purchase it. While it's tougher than most games out there, its shitload of settings make sure people just getting into the game and find an easier server to learn while the hardest of hardcore can go on an extreme realism server and experience something never really seen before in games.

The PC community makes sure to back good PC exclusives in the end anyway. All we know is it's selling well so far and that number can only go up once the word is out there about this game. It doesn't have a big marketing team behind it, but this beta will spread as more and more people hear about the game and see videos of it and realize just how different it is.

With some bug fixes and optimizations, this could entertain me for a very long time. Especially with free DLC coming thanks to their Valve-like DLC strategy. I know two more tanks are in the works but did anyone hear about what else was being made? I'm hoping a halftrack appears so I can own the guys in the back with my AT rifle. :D

It's not like it's some major surprise that the game is more hardcore than other games out there considering the first game and how much we knew about this game. It's not meant to be mastered in one sitting and it's kind of hard to survive when you don't know the maps and others do with their bolt-action rifles just waiting to pick you off. This game has a learning curve and it gets a lot better once you know what you're doing. I mean, everyone sucks in the beginning with this game and then get better and better as you learn everything about the maps. Anyway, the servers all have different realism modes like it's been stated so avoid the extreme realism and start off on the easy servers. It's hardcore, but it's also meant to be accessible on the easier settings and then you advance to the more realistic servers when you're ready.

Apparently they are already on the most accessible settings. I'm fine with hardcore but the UI is incredibly obtuse.

Game is shockingly brilliant. I'm going to be putting a lot of time into this game. Might be one of the first games to actually dethrone my TF2 sessions.

The sound design, weapon feel and brutality of the combat are just top notch. The cover system's a bit too clunky for my liking, but it's still one of the best FPS cover systems I've ever seen. I don't know how I feel about the Countdown game mode, but I'm sure the competitive types will get a kick out of it.

Having said all that, there's hella bugs up in this bitch. In part it's warming to know that this beta is actually a beta and not an expensive demo, but also I'm suspect of how much will be fixed by the game's technical launch.

I find there's a weird stalling of your guy when you get shot near cover, where the games mechanics can't decide if you should be healing yourself or taking cover, so it kind of does neither, but totally immobilises you. There's also some wonky sound bugs where music will keep playing after match ends, and gun sounds will disappear completely. While it seems iron sights aren't mandatory to kill people directly in front of you, I've noticed the LMGs have this weird tenancy to hipfire every except for directly in front of you. Also, when you set your FOV to 90 degrees (because I play on monitors made in 2011) you can see through world geometry, which isn't so much advantageous as it is distracting. HUD elements seem to either not appear at all, or appear briefly and then never remove themselves. Sometimes the minimap will turn eye-blasting neon green, which is a bit odd. There's an option somewhere in the game to mute voice chat (because I like listening to podcasts), but it doesn't appear to work. Lacking any ability to mute players, or voice as a whole, you're kinda stuck with either not listening to the game or not listening to the other thing. Oh, and I should probably mention that animations are a mix between hilariously bad and... uh. No, sorry, I lied. It's not a mix. They're straight up some of the worst animations you'll ever see. Sometimes any kind of bone structure completely fails and you end up with shit like this:

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/576681144961302899/A07CBD9408F1795FFA682A1D2B5A42C1768F6B0D/
(jpeg compression and film grain! - also not a big ass picture anymore)

So, yeah. This game is Beta as shit. It also sucked a good 5 hours out of my life that I should be using to do assignments. I imagine this game will do very well for itself.

Why does GAF have such a hardon for this game?

I've only played about 3 hours of the game so far, but I'll try to put my experience into words.

To put it simply: it's intense. No other FPS creates tension like I had with my (short) time with RO2. When you're sniping from a window, there's a real palpable feeling of being completely vulnerable while looking for someone to shoot. Pretty much any hit will kill you, if not cripple you, effectively making you easy prey if the enemy is in any position to follow up.

It gets even more intense when you have to sprint across an open space to reach an objective. Sure, you have to do similar things in COD and BF, but if you're hit in the leg in COD, no biggie. Here, you immediately crumple, leaving you easy prey for another shot. When you do make it across a large gap with bullets flying all around you and whizzing past your head, it's exhilarating. It really feels like you accomplished something when you get past the enemy's defenses.

It's just as satisfying on the opposite end: when an enemy is charging toward your objective, pulling up your rifle, leading, and sniping them in the chest feels awesome, especially with the way the bodies slump and scream/gurgle realistically--not for the feint of heart. It's also nice to know that you stand a chance against groups of enemies. Don't get me wrong, it's always better to travel in groups. Yet because a single shot can easily take an enemy down, if you take a group of 2 or more enemies by surprise, you can wipe them out before they can really retaliate. This is much more difficult to accomplish in COD, because enemies are bullet sponges there.

The sound design is also awesome. All of the ambient sounds as you walk through a creaky, decrepit building add to the already sky-high tension, especially when the echoes of footfalls are heard all around you. Distant gunfire sounds exactly like it should, and comes from where it should--to the point where I used it to keep tabs on where the battles were taking place more-so than the mini map.

The musical score is also really well done and gives the game an epic feeling that I don't get with CoD's score-less multiplayer matches.

Aside from some rather (OK, incredibly) annoying bugs--like one where, at random, I'm instantly switched to the opposing team when I kill an enemy--I'm having a blast. I was certainly getting frustrated when I first started playing (ask Salsa!), because I'd walk into a map I'd never seen before, go to a window/corner/wall, pop up and get sniped before I even saw anyone. This was pretty much my first hour. But once you get your bearings and find a loadout you like, it's an experience I think no other game really duplicates, especially in today's COD-clone games market.

Oh, and please make sure that who you're aiming at is an enemy. Occasionally TKing is certainly understandable. I was just as guilty as any when I started out. But getting TKed 3 times in one round, forcing me to spend most of it browsing GAF while I was waiting for another spawn to be earned, suuuuuuucked.

I have to add that no game has made me feel like I'm playing Saving Private Ryan like this game. The moments where you poke your head out a window on the second story of some building, hastily aim your MP40 and start dumping on the three dudes below? Feels amazing.

Or being stuck behind a broken down truck in the middle of a snowy road, trying to get into a building while being shot from three different places at once. You can use the cover mechanic to get right up on the truck, and then you can fire through the truck's windows into the enemy location. You can just spray their location and for the most part, they'll keep their head down because they sure as fuck don't want to get tagged, but also you get the suppression mechanic kicking in, making them inaccurate and their view all fucky.

It's such a great mix of feeling like a bad ass motherfucker and some unlucky sack of shit with too much flesh and not enough gun.

Not many games do atmosphere in multiplayer. I don't know if I can say RO2 does it well, but it at the least tries. It's totes rad.

I love how satisfying each and every gun is. Mowing down krauts in a tiny corridor with your revolver is every bit as satisfying as blowing a guy's head off with an anti-tank rifle.

Also I love the sound in confined spaces. Makes pistols sound menacing indoors.

About to play the beta but I'll just say you can get the deluxe edition for super cheap (£20) on greenmangaming with one of their 20% vouchers.

Totally worth it.

So this here:

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1452-HCVB-6984&l=english

fixed my server browser crashing to desktop. Browser is still laggy but it works. Game feels great from what I've played. Bayonets not being in yet makes me a sad panda. Gunplay still is the bomb. Sound design is great. Can't wait for the full product.

Still some issues. Sometimes I get stuck after respawning and sometimes a red crosshair appears on the left side of the screen. Weird... I also still suck at tanking :).

Some people just like good, hardcore games.

One of the great things about this game is that when taking an objective or doing anything as a team, you will take casualties no matter how well you try to play.
But that's part of the gameplay, the fact that no matter what you try to do nothing is safe.
It's all about accomplishing that set objective and it's why team games are so good.
I know this sounds like every other online shooter but when 1 shot kills, the tension is always there and if you get killed, there is no point blaming the team or yourself. That's the nature of war.
