Reddit AMA with Xbox One dev

The majority of the masses care only about the console, except that the success of the Kinect carries much more weight to us. The sensor costs almost as much as the console to make.

DAMN IT Microsoft. This was just a bad bad bad decision in every respect.

It could also mean they could drop a bomb and release a kinect-less version for $299

And the guy in the AMA said that won't happen since their entire vision is centered around Kinect. It is more important for them that Kinect succeeds than the console. I can see that to Microsoft this is much bigger than mere video games. They want to push Kinect in other markets and are using video games as a front for that.

You'd think if the Kinect were really that expensive and that MS were so invested in it, that they would have focused on it at E3. I don't even know why it exists, except maybe if I want to Skype while I game, which I don't.

theres no way to factually know what the cancelled feature would done.

common sense and past actions make it laughable to think that you'd be able to share a game with 10 people

totally agree with you. I don't know why some people fail to realize that MS family plan would have imposed greater risk on developers and publishers because everyone will create a circle of 10 friends to share games with, decreasing the actual sales of a 10m seller to a mere 1-2m.

the thing that would make this more dangerous than physical copies sharing is the easiness of actually transfer the copies digitally.

all that considering the family plan was as described by MS, which I highly doubt.

The responses read like something an intern would say and contained very little substance. AMA? Right. As for Kinect, I wonder how long before they do another 180, make it an option and sell the console for $399.

They also said their version was a online only console and that changed, saying that, I hope they don't drop the kinect.

Their remaining concept and target of their console is kinect for other stuff like TV and communications. Considering iirc there isn't a headset packed in the box, that thing is used for comms in MP as well, I don't think I see them backing on that. They dropped their nonsense DRM stuff, but they won't drop kinect.

I'm still going to say that i'd be very leery at this point with them giving Sony the nod in hardware power, and basically that this unveiling has been a disaster with the consumer's opinion severely damaged. I would not be surprised to see a much shorter than expect life for the Xbone before they try to unveil a new gen.

i like how he pretends he can't reveal certain information because they would find out who he is, as if this bullshit AMA wasn't done with their permission. This is just another PR ploy by Microsoft.

It's clearly someone in the PR department posing as a dev. The language just doesn't seem to fit a developer especially if you're trying to make it seem like Microsoft isn't a bad person because "we're all gamers".

I'm curious how this dev knows the relative cost of the Kinect vs. console, but has no knowledge of reported yield issues given the enormous impact of yields on cost (or knowledge of increased clock speeds, for that matter). That's a very odd set of data to have.

When did MS decided to implement the Kinect 2.0? Before or after it launched on Xbox 360. Did they see the casual sales and think, "YES! Make it mandatory!" - ?

I don't get the faith people have that because a feature/accessory is guaranteed to be in 100% of the players' hands that developers will suddenly devote all these resources to making an awesome implementation. That is a myth. It did fuck all for the 3D in the 3ds, the sixaxis, the wiiu gamepad, the vita back touch, the wiimote, etc etc.

If a feature is truly good for gaming the innovation and implementations will come naturally and quickly like the DS's dual screens. If the best an accessory can do is act as a checker to see if you're body sort of matches a stencil of a dance move, this is more a sign that there are no good implementations rather than devs not putting in the resources due to uncertainty about the userbase.

hmm, good point. This doesn't seem to make much sense.

Not when his agenda is to push people to buy the hardware (and his games). He's trying to make Kinect seem like it actually matters, and gives it some weight with its cost in comparison to the system itself. Then tries to downplay the inferior specs of the machine.

How is it worse then getting free games on PSN+?

How is it worse then getting free games on PSN+?

Easy, free games on PS+ are usually beyond 6 months old and are no longer selling at retail. Family Sharing was supposedly going to work with any games including at Day One of that game's launch, where a huge majority of the copies of a game are sold.

If you'll notice, publishers give free games on PS+ in an extremely strategic manner, i.e. Saint's Row 3 to hype Saint's Row 4, Battlefield 3 to hype Battlefield 4. They get publicity for their upcoming games, they get goodwill from their consumers ("Wow look at how generous EA is giving us Battlefield!"), for essentially nothing because new copies of Saint's Row 3 and Battlefield 3 are selling essentially 0 copies by now.

It's fairly obvious that MS is trying to trojan horse the Kinect through the Xbox One, like Sony trojan horsed blu-ray through the PS3.

MS has made it clear that the gamer market is way too myopic for them. They want to make a product that sells to literally everyone. There's no way they will get rid of the Kinect, because they are hoping that the Xbox One will be the trojan horse that delivers the Kinect into households everywhere and eventually one day they can maybe license the Kinect to TV, appliance, computer manufacturers, businesses, whatever you can imagine, much like Sony and the other companies involved in the group that developed the Blu-Ray license to all studios and many hardware makers.

If they can make it so that people buy into the "Minority Report" future where they want a Kinect like interface in every facet of their life, licensing fees would blow whatever profits the video game business could ever make for them.

So making a sale is worse then making no sale?

You still need to own the game if you want to play with the person who is sharing with you. Only one person can play at a time. So it is no difference from sharing a disc because only one copied is being used at a time.

I don't see many people who are going to work out a schedule of when they each can play a game and for how long.

For something you want to play right away you would probably still buy it so you can play it when you want to.

I'm not surprised that the new Kinect BOM is close to the cost of the Xbox One. It's obvious that they neutered the X1 in order to make sure Kinect was in every box. So without Kinect it would be $299/$350? At $299 I'd get one just for Titanfall.

Stupid Kinect :(

Losing 9 potential sales with each sale is worse. We all know how much the game industry loves their potential sales with their constant scapegoating of used games and piracy. ("Oh but if people didn't buy used games and pirate games we would see a billion more sales for sure because all of those people would have bought new! How do we know? We just do!")

I don't see many people who are going to work out a schedule of when they each can play a game and for how long.

For something you want to play right away you would probably still buy it so you can play it when you want to.

And yet it's a well known fact that this is exactly what happened on a large scale on the PS3 with 5 gameshares. It was so hurtful to publisher sales that they forced Sony to limit it to 2.

Hm.
Very interesting. Especially this one.

Sony acknowledged that their showing wasn't that impressive, games wise.

yeah, PS4 show was lackluster to say the least.

It's SCEWWS fault tho, Sony strongest side is their first party, expectations was that Microsoft get third party hits and Sony show have stronger first party games but SCEWWS went throwing games left and right for PS3 (GT6 for an example), they are in bad situation now with PS4 having nothing but multiplat, I can see them letting Yoshida go soon because this mess is all on him.

It seems way too early to say any of that.

Didn't MS announce almost everything they have while Sony still has a lot to reveal?

The guy is afraid to blow his Identity, but then he tells us what Mark Whitten told him at E3. Sure he spoke to a lot of devs, but seriously.

Either the guy is a tool or the reddit stunt has been sanctioned by his employer.

Why are there so many Sony fans (or so it seems from reading this thread) that are so angry in an Xbox thread?
I see more Xbox fan in Denial than angry Sony fans. Xbox fans seems angry too. I can never understand why they think that family sharing are full games for 10 people, even MS Never said that.Ms always sidestep the questions with answers that can mean many things lol.

Hi new junior here

Some background before . I'm a phd student in comp sci and I've interned at MS research labs but in general I prefer Sony consoles due to their exclusives .

I've been reading gaf for the past month and about this issue . I believe

One Ms is trying to differentiate viz a viz the kinect and it's actually a really impressive tech. And I feel it's a good thing that Sony and ms are taking divergent paths . It can only help.

two having interned at ms I feel their research labs come up with amazing ideas and tech but sometimes the implementation (which is the most important part for consumers gets convoluted)

To illustrate with the new kinect you can monitor heartbeats and try to judge emotions which IMO as a gamer for ages can be amazing for say adaptive survival horror games . But it's all new tech and maybe not mature enough yet .imagine if the game could sense when you're at your peak "sacredness"
And spook you then that would be a very individual and great experience .

But I reiterate again its all new tech . And with time it could lead to great things . I feel we should embrace what they are trying to do in some way but I agree the messaging has been really out of line and very PR ey.

welcome new junior. great post. looking forward to more.

It looks like his job is to write apps for the OS so he probably often chats with Kinect engineers.

Or...they wan't to show that they don't just drop their current system at the first sign of next gen like MS is doing now, and like they did when the 360 hit. They also only showed about a quarter of what they are working on for the next year, while MS announced most of what they have in the works if we go by the announced numbers.

Wait until after convention season ends before passing judgement on either Sony or MS. We still have Comic-Con, Gamescom, PAX, and TGS before these systems launch, and I would be shocked if there weren't more exclusives announced at these conventions. Though, again, I think Sony has more announcements to make in the next few months than MS simply due to how they each treated E3.

Wait what? PS3 support should be at e3 to show that they are not leaving their prior base in the dust. And having nothing but Multi-plats? I didn't know Killzone, knack, driveclub were coming to pc or xbox one, when did they confirm this? Oh right, never are they going to another platform. We already have rumors of titanfall not being truly exclusive (it technically already isn't). I also wouldn't be surprised to see Dead Rising on ps4 within a year either (not like I really care though).

Lets not forget Sony hasnt said all their games being made either. We still have Gamescon, TGS to see if anything else gets announced.

Their entire vision was also about DRM.

But we know how that ended...

If Xbone will sell like shit they will drop kinect faster than DRM

How is it that we have a leaker do an AMA and we still don't have a straight answer as to what the family plan was?!?!?

Otherwise, everything he did actually talk about only bolstered my feelings that I can safely skip it. For now atleast. Kinect is half the cost? What in the world? When has the kinect ever proven itself to be worth that? I know people dug a couple dance games... but otherwise, HALF THE COST!?!? They still haven't justified its existence yet even though it's half of the goddamn system.

Microsoft is making my head spin lately. I enjoyed the OG xbox and early days of the 360 so much. :/

That is not even it.

Family sharing was not about individual games. It was all about library. By one person at the time policy if someone would play random game from that library you wouldn't have an option to play your games

This is why 10 is not that much. It may be even 100 or 1000 it wouldn't matter. If this feature would be used by more than 2 people thing would be impossible to manage with your friends.

"It was for full games. Can't comment too much on this but its purpose was to eliminate the need to ever have to physically hand someone a game that you bought to share with them."

Because reasons. Apparently the only thing they are ever allowed to comment on this is that it was for full games.

If the technology was that advanced, you'd think Microsoft would have showcased it by now in a first-party title. I suspect Kinect 2.0 will mainly be used for UI interaction.

Just like how anyone knows anything. I'm sure it went something like: "hey, Jim from hardware told me that the Kinect costs as much as the console to make." "oh shit, really?" And nothing about yields has floated around the office. Could be that simple.

we already know that Sony tried this with the PS3 (unrestricted sharing between 5 accounts) and third parties were not happy with it and busted it down to 2. That program was 100% guaranteed to come with a lot of qualifiers and restrictions to that sharing, but we will never find out what they are as the program was scrapped.

As it is, microsoft has been trotting out the "it was really good, but you guys overreacted and now will never get it" line for some time now to make it appear that DRM "wasn't that bad." and we judged them unfairly. It's BS.

Agree. I'm tired of them acting as if there were no restrictions after what happened with Sony game sharing. They were not giving out FREE GAMEZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!! for everybody in your family.

you realize sony has many more games to reveal right?

The people who created that are all gone.

The problem is you have gamers like me that have all the systems, but not a Kinect for their Xbox because I've seen nothing but problems and un-interesting things for it. I loved the idea of Steel Battalion, but without a controller it just flat out doesn't work. Kinect is too limited in it's requirements for me to even USE(room space, location, etc), and now I know their entire new system is based off of it!
