Any game that can be played SP should be able to operate offline. Regardless of the platform, subscriptions aside.

Mostly because of comparisons to games that are offline? I was just leaving room for someone to think that the game might not have required online due to comparisons to other games that are not online based in anyway.
Personally, I am thinking that if online is a requirement, then it is likely because you will run into other players (it is GaaS, right?). I mean, I really don't know yet. I'm looking forward to playing the game myself to find out.

To put it simply, I was acknowledging a possible reason why someone might have believed the game would not require online play.

Yet in the latest video all I have seen is a dude shooting up massive amounts of zombies/vampires on sight with shotguns and machine guns accompanied with his friends.

It is not because you have your occasional stealth takedown that you qualify as an immersive sim lmao, do you even know what your are talking about ?

To say that Redfall and Prey (their previous outing, a game of the generation contender) belong to the the same genre is either proof of being a totally delusional person or a straight up lier. Are you one of this two ?

Generally not, but FWIW, in my case (as well as others) we were gonna play it on game pass anyway, which requires you to have a check in every now and then anyway.
 
Not a big deal, to me. I have an internet connection and my xbox (along with every other device in my house) is always connected to it anyway. People still make a big deal about this sort of thing in 2023?

It's already like that for games you buy digitally. Even physical games require servers now days to download the game.

Also, this is a GAAS game, this might be a way to prevent cheaters.
 
I'm not paying for the privilege of a game that can't be played when my connection drops in the short term and ceases to be playable at all in the long term.

If I can't play a single player mode/game offline, I'm not buying it. It's as simple as that. I'll either get it through GOG or not at all. There's plenty of other games out there.

They have to choose offline over anti cheat, they can still take those accounts down eventually

But always online is a no no especially when games that don't perform well get their servers shut down

That's not really the issue though. The issue stems from not being able to play a single player mode when the servers are inevitably turned off, despite having paid for the privilege of playing the game.

It's about game preservation and being able to revisit titles later down the line.

This is happening to The Avengers and even though it isn't a good game, it sucks for people who want to revisit it in the future or who are still playing it in single player mode. The game isn't even 3 years old.

I had to buy a $250 remote starter because fucking Lexus wanted to charge $150-$300(can't remember how much) per year for it.

Monster Hunter (both Rise and World) games are extremely tied to online. It is essentially a GaaS game with its daily and week events and it doesn't need always on connection. So this is really ridiculous and unecessary.
 
I think I'm confused about what the game actually is. I thought it was a contained game that might get some dlc. But is it actually a live service game like Destiny? if so, I think it kind of needs always online.

Same, but I am not too hopeful over the gunplay. I enjoy Arkane games, but the gunplay in their games just don't feel as good as other games IMO.
 
If a game can be played solo, it should be able to be played offline. End of discussion. Period. Full stop. Making a solo mode be always online is simply taking away a consumer's rights to use a product that they purchased. I don't care if they have capable internet and the server is always functioning. This is the gradual destruction of the rights of ownership.

It was the lack if hit detection more than anything.

I think they had ID help them out on it this time, which it s good but still looked off so fingers crossed.
 
I just can't get worked up about this kind of stuff anymore... even Nintendo has forced online connection for NSO back catalogue games. It's not 24/7, but it checks for online connection frequently. And if i wasn't connected to online in a certain situation and wasn't able to connect, but wanted to play SNES or N64, I'd be unable to use the service that I'm paying for if the system tried checking. It's just become so commonplace, it's not even really newsworthy anymore that games require it. It's just standard industry practice.
 
I'm not a multiplayer gamer, so this sounds like Bethesda's so called solo label which isn't really singleplayer to me, so not my type of game even though i love Arkane's Dishonored's, i'll pass on Redfall.

it was probably a deliberate design decision to make online co-op as easy and smooth a transition as possible. Not the answer you were hoping for, but probably makes the game experience better overall. Assuming you have the internet.
 
In 15 years, I'm sure they'll patch out the requirement, but also it's rare for any game or DRM for that matter to not have some sort of online check in system.

But are those gamers going to be pleased with Arkane's failure to making interesting shooting? This whole move toward FPS action with Deathloop and this game seems so misguided for Arkane. Their strengths are in the immersive sim genre and they seem to be completely dumping that in favor of an audience that will probably not pay this game any attention. I'm willing to bet we'll be getting a server shut down announcement due to lack of a player base in 1.5 to 2 years.

Outriders had the same problem.

Pretty sure that diablo 2 remake on ps5 require always online aswell but i could be wrong.

It's fucking bullshit even in 2023, people can have internet problems for hours or days, not sure how the apologists don't get this simple concept, not everyone has a super stable internet connection, it's probably the opposite, not everyone live in the fucking silicon valley...

I have a super stable one and i still had one hour without internet 2 days ago while i was playing ds remake because shit happens, if that one was always online, i would have been fucked.

I have the internet, but games tend to either be singleplayer or multiplayer focused, rarely both and i'm a SP gamer, and the solo Bethesda's games like ESO and Fallout 76 i don't like, good for people who enjoy those games but not for me, i like the option to play offline, it seems like a live service game with maybe a store added at some point. it's put me off the game.

Source on the "uninteresting shooting" part? They've been working on the shooting with ID software, and they've consistently and repeatedly claimed the game would have strong immersive sim elements.

They aren't completely dumping their roots for this game.

'Player base'? It's a story driven campaign that can be played solo or co-op. Not a GaaS game reliant on a playerbase.

When I buy a game, give them my money,i want to own the game. But when I can't play MY game without Internet connection, it is not my game, it's their game and they allow me to play it as long and when they think it's OK.

And that stuff doesn't work for me. I am 43 years old and I get the feeling that more and more stuff we buy is still not ours.

To be honest, I'm not sure the real hardcore Duty guys play anything besides Duty and maybe 2k, and either Madden or Fifa (continent dependent). The ones who also play games like Destiny will probably give it a shot if they have a PC or Xbox, and GP. I'd imagine plenty without GP will give it a shot if the reviews are good, as long as they have something to play it on.

I can sympathize if someone was a big fan of different types of games from the studio and feeling left out.

Yes, I don't like the playable characters. I don't like their ethnic race, their facial structure, or their personality. I just can't relate to them, it feels off. If this game had some type of character customization where I can create a character that represents how I want them to be, then I tend to enjoy it more like most Action RPGs like Elden Ring, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls titles. Because I don't like the characters, it's not appealing to me. So I don't want to bother even trying out the game, even if it's available on GamePass.

Not to mention that the anticonsumer of always being online for single-player campaign is offputting.
 
Horizon is always online? Never even noticed.

Anyway, I can see why some are legitimately concerned and not just warrioring. I have stable internet so it's not an issue for me unless the servers are trash. I'm thinking back to Outriders, kind of the same thing here. Optional co-op, but the game is completely playable and good in SP. It required internet, servers sucked, lots of people had issues.

I also don't buy the idea that this could screw people over when the servers inevitably shut down. They can patch it out.

Source on the uninteresting shooting is all of their previous games. The shooting is typically the most bland part. That's not just me. That's pretty much the most common criticism of Arkane's games. I hope they've learned something from id, but none of us will know for certain until it's released.

As to the type of game this is, from what I can tell, the game requires you to be always online and has a large focus on its multiplayer component. If there's no players, why would Arkane/Betheda/Microsoft continue to maintain it's servers? If I'm totally off base, blame the marketing that has made this game look like Borderlands.
