Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

More realistic continuation to this:

What if... we build a console only Japanese people care about? You know, we're Japanese and Japan is the greatest country in the world and we have to make a console just for their needs. And rest of the world can go screw themselves if they don't like what Japan likes.

Oh, and reveal presentation will be all in Japanese because fuck gaijins.
Not sure why this is an appropriate response? It's insulting and offensive.

So The Wii U is a disaster- lets rethink our approach...

What if...

We make an underpowered system...

With shitty battery life...

And we price it out of market....

And we did the same to the accessories...

And we provide next to no internal memory in order to discourage digital purchases...

And by that we lessen the appeal for 3rd parties to join in...

And we then charge for online...

But then we half-ass the online concept by making an iPhone app for it instead...

And did I mention fuck 3rd parties?....

And what if our launch lineup was absolutely abysmal?

And we'll trickle out information in a unpolished manner so as to confuse and be overlooked by the masses?

Meeting adjourned!

The Nintendo Switch
I agree. The thing is already turning out to be a mess. I honestly don't see it turning out much different from the WiiU and the Wii once people wised up to what it really was.

I feel like the only thing that could save it is the fact that it's replacing the 3DS but then it's $100 too expensive for that.

Sorry I didn't wait another six weeks to express my opinion, you guys.

LOL at the people who keep saying "Wait and see! Wait and see!"
Fans did the same thing during the early days of the Wii U. I remember—even on GAF—Nintendoforce came rushing to the defense, giving Nintendo the benefit of the doubt since they lacked the experience that MS or Sony had in the online world. Look how that turned out.

At some point without a serious shakeup in management and/or thought leadership, you have to accept you are what you are and it's clear Nintendo hasn't changed direction with the Switch. They've only grown more brazen and doubled-down on the promise of Wii U, the console for everyone and no one. I really hope Switch is a success, but goddammit Nintendo, what the name of God are you doing?

who else has a portable home console

Last I checked I can play games on my phone. To lots of people mobile has been a compelling enough alternative yet Nintendo is continuing to act like they dont have to provide the same quality of life standards.

That's the big question. With this new app who the fuck knows how playing with friends works

Why would software, which has always handled its own matchmaking, care about the OS? This is about OS-level functionality like the eShop or Parental Controls, or more aptly equivalent to Xbox Lobbies and such where you can form parties and matchmake completely outside of a game and move into the game.

They've seemingly offloaded just about all such OS functionality to smartdevices.

Lol how did I miss this post?

Because the online service includes things like the e-shop access, parental controls and screenshot feature, which actually are accessible from the Switch itself. Read their own damn site:

http://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/

Look at the description under "Online Lobby and Voice Chat". Either everybody at Nintendo from Reggie to their website designers are completely incapable of including the most basic of information or....**mindblowing** they are committed to using a phone app for Online Lobbies and Voice chat?!?!? The writing is on the wall people.

So, you have seen this process?

You know that it doesn't display the users in the lobby on the app as well as on the screen? Or when you click quick match in Splatoon 2, it displays progress on matchmaking on your phone, while you play a little mini game on the switch screen?

You know these things? No, nobody does. It's just jump to conclusions, negative ones if possible, and be smug and shitpost.

I forgot about that one, yeah. I do find it hard to believe there won't be any friends list or online functionality on the system itself. We'll see.

No wonder the UI we saw looked so clean. Everything other than games and a few system features are all in a phone app. Lol.

dude, you gotta stop

He continues after OP cuts off that you can use your phone as a hotspot or if you're on the go and connected to wi-fi it offers a fairly convenient solution compared to busting out a huge gaming headset. I think they're eventually going to have these functions on the system itself, but this is certainly a peculiar way to get things done. That said, I'm waiting to experience it before full judgement.

Actually, now that I went and checked it, their plan was already pretty clear in their very own Online Service page:

This MOST LIKELY means random matchmaking (launched from within the game) will be available in March. AKA: yes, you will be able to play MK8 online before the paid service.

Notice how they don't say "from your smart device OR console". Custom lobbies and voice chat will MOST LIKELY be handled ONLY by the smartphone app.

It's literally all right here. From their own damn site. People defending this needs to stop trying to see what they want or "hope" by some chance you can do all of this from the console.

Seriously. Expect it to play out like this people. You'll save yourself a lot of disappointment.

Did DeNA trick the dinosaurs over at NoJ into thinking this is a great idea?

Cause lol

Best possible scenario. They would treat DeNA's world as bible just because they are Japanese. Nintendo has some gaijin trust issues.

Not sure why this is an appropriate response? It's insulting and offensive.

I believe they actually said once that Japan is the greatest country. There's nothing wrong treating your homeland better. It's just we don't get what we want that way.

I really don't understand the doom and gloom when you havnt even seen it or have any of the details. Sure criticise the messaging and the ambiguity but geez..

It seems pretty obvious to me that they wanted as much processing power for games as possible. Sorry if already discussed couldnt be bothered reading through the whole thread

That might be a possibility but the Vita handled things like friends and chat online quite well.

the problem people are having with this is that even if it works as advertised, it's needless. it's a solution to a problem that nobody was having. Nobody can name a single potential advantage to having the online service tied exclusively to a separate device. Perhaps it's a technical concession, like you said, but that doesn't all of a sudden put it above criticism anymore than any other decisions made by develops and publishers on hardware and software are criticized here every day, often before anybody has a chance to use them. Nobody else gets this "lets wait and see!" parachute, why should Nintendo? Why are they so special when it comes to boneheaded decisions? People don't necessarily have to try and idea to criticize it (Xbox One DRM says hello)

i mean, i already wasnt a fan of the voice chat on a mobile device. i dont want to have another device on/around me to have to manage silly shit like that. matchmaking? on your phone? FOR. WHAT. couldnt be bothered to make it a menu selection on screen? no, that would be too convenient.

Yeah, Nintendo got to carry this with the strength of its software like Wii U again. Not in the sense of sales but in terms of its main appeal.

I'm trying to be optimistic and hoping that what this means is that for talking and matchmaking with your friends you have to use the app but with random people you can do it through console just like the Wii U. Its still shit but not the "all online features are through the app" doomsday some people are dreading

You know, this could be a great idea, IF other Switch form factors are in the cards. This would mean. Your friends list, etc - is no longer device centric, but network centric across all devices - anywhere.

Not only that, but having your physical phone act as the hub for the network makes sense considering we all have our phones all the time - I know I do.

Tomorrow morning I am thinking of sending an email to nintendo's support, it's not possible that they will force us to use smartphones, i simply can't believe Nintendo thinks that's gonna work.

Why a huge gaming headset? I have great earbuds with a mike for my phone, or use the same model that came with the ps4.

His answer is pure bullshit

Neogaf is not Nintendo's focus.

Does Nintendo have a focus any more?

Switch is looking like a jack-of-all trades but master of none at this point. Everything from its very nature as a home console and handheld hybrid, to the different types of controllers and long list of built-in technologies and gimmicks pushing their price up, to the weird solutions to online - it's a hodge-podge of ideas.

I know that based on that site, as well as everything Reggie has said since the press conference, that a separate phone app is required for lobbies and voice chat. yes I know that for a fact. Because I have common sense.

This reads like a 4Chan post.

You know that smartglass, playstation app, as well as account system throughout multiple systems exist in other platforms, right?

Oh it's the world then right? They want people to change their lives for the honor of playing Nintendo games. They will not assimilate. They think they have the clout to force their vision. Fucking lol.

what the fuck is this? why would somebody "change their life" to play nintendo games? AHAHAHAHa

maaaaan you are too far gone

What I don't understand is what if I want to mix game audio and chat? Just SOL I guess. Also will I have to use an app just to play some MK8 matches? If so that is fucked up.

have you seen the process? nintendo's site says you have to use the app is for matchmaking and voice chat. reggie says you have to use the app for matchmaking and voice chat. there are no conclusions being jumped to here.

Nah ninja. Wait for the other other facts. These are just placeholders.

I would.

Apple Pay is the only thing that uses the NFC chip and for security reasons they will probably never change that.

A lot of us thought we'd never see a Mario game on non-Nintendo hardware but now he's on iOS (timed exclusive might I add). All it takes is money to get things done.

It just really seems odd that they included NFC in every single controller option just for amiibo. It does make sense, to me, to have NFC in every controller if my theory is true and this is how you must play online. It would really suck to want to play online but not have the correct controller enabled with NFC enabled to do so.

tl;dr I'm most likely wrong

That site honesty makes things a bit clearer for me. Managing friends has to be on the console since it's part of the free tier. The app only references online lobbies and chat. Voice chat on the app is dumb, but I rarely use voice chat at all and lobbies sounds like Miiverse type stuff or maybe party management.

It's dumb, but maybe not as catastrophic as I feared.

Tomorrow morning I am thinking of sending an email to nintendo's support, it's not possible that they will force us to use smartphones, i simply can't believe Nintendo thinks that's gonna work.

Email their customer service and tell them you're a shareholder. When I did that, I received several responses within the same day. Don't be an asshole, though; give them a thoughtful, well-written explanation of your concerns. Chances are you won't learn anything new and they'll only allay your fears with corporate rigamarole, but at least they can send it up the ladder to someone who might see it and can make a difference.

Besides how ridiculous this post is in general, I don't get why have this phone app thing would be more appealing to the japanese market in particular.
