Reggie: Switch matchmaking and lobbies handled through phone app

Wait a minute you can use a headset to plug in like this guy? But wireless headset (Bluetooth) isn't confirmed, yet?

"Doesn't effect me so it isn't a problem".
Take that thought process with you, then apply it to your life. You will lose everything.

Thats right it wouldn't be a problem for me, not that I am getting on launch. But for the people who do then I feel for them. which would be the majority I guess lol.

Someone on the other voice chat thread suggested that the people without smartphones could put their laptop next to them to run an android emulator to run the app to chat with your friends. Sounds like a reasonable solution for you. Keeps with the portability of the system.

Don't forget the solar panels to attach to your backpack to power the laptop in it.

Both matchmaking and lobbies are only available through the phone application? What kind of backwards implementation is that? I don’t get how Nintendo can be so out of touch with it’s customers. Glad I’m not paying for their outdated online service.

Honestly if Zelda wasn't a launch title and didn't run better on the Switch, I wouldn't be buying this on day one.

According to nintendo you can only use voice chat through the app. That's the problem. There's a jack in the tablet that should only do audio out, but none on any of the controllers.

People are tripping out over this, but it doesn't seem like that big a deal to me...and i'm not even gonna buy a switch.

We are already accustomed to tethering devices to our mobile phones. Over of the main reasons for doing that is because it minimizes the processing that needs to handled on the peripheral device. Think smart watches.

In the case of the switch, it's primarily used for playing games. But anyone who plans on using it for mobile online multiplayer is probably already carrying a device that's superior for text input and has decent audio capabilities (A cell phone) . Why not tap into that and minimize the drain on the Switch's battery?

It's not just MP. I like to chat with a friend when playing SP games and they are playing the same. Help each other out, solve puzzels together, etc. We both want Zelda. So, with this ridiculous setup, in order for me to be able to chat with him while we are both playing in our respective houses, I lose the ability to wear headphones. I ALWAYS wear my cans. There is no way for me to hear my phone audio if I have them on and vice versa. This is not "elegant".

Reggie probably should be fired by now for fucking up the messaging on this so bad.

They will clear this up soon enough but by then enough people will read the half baked conclusions in this thread and clickbait articles that it won't matter. What a mess.

You can listen to game audio through headphones. There's a 3.5mm headphone jack on the tablet.
Ok. Let's say you dock the tablet to play on the tv. I don't know if they'll still expect people to plug their headset into the tablet or there will be Bluetooth for wireless headsets while it's docked.

I will never understand the mentality of people who make decisions based on nostalgia. Nintendo was great, Nintendo was innovative, Nintendo deserved market space. They lost this privileged long time ago.

I am not expecting people to like what I like, or that my opinion supercedes yours but there is not a single reason, logically thinking, to own a switch or support Nintendo and their device. It's the equivalent of buying every iteration of Apple product or buying clothing and other products based on brand name alone.

Is Nintendo a the switch a complete write of ? No, they have yet to prove it but it 100% is right now.

This is just stupid. It's going to have a lot of games I want to play and I like the core concept. Sorry that not everyone is flipping out about this admittedly stupid voice chat solution.

Why does the online sound more backwards then that of the wii u but you also have to pay this time LOL.

Wii U had voice chat on game basis so could voice chat on black ops for instance. The backwards part was there was no system wide implementation. Also why not use discord or skype since this is via smartphone anyways lol

Well, I mean, to be fair, since the Switch doesn't have Party Chat, you'd have to go through your phone to talk to him during Zelda anyway. But the lack of Party Chat is just another problem.

Ok. Let's say you dock the tablet to play on the tv. I don't know if they'll still expect people to plug their headset into the tablet or there will be Bluetooth for wireless headsets while it's docked.

Yeah, that's an interesting question, although it's not on the topic of online functionality (and voice chatting).

If you don't want kids getting lured by pervs then lock off voice chat behind the parental controls that have already been debuted.

Until they outright say

1. 'you will be unable to get in a match with friends with just the console' or

2 'you will be unable to participate in voice chat with friends with just the console'

I will refrain from anger.

I just can't believe those could be true. They simply want to emphasize the app thing, but there is just not way those two things aren't true.

There's just no way.

and this is a paid service.

Ha, I was about to quote someone else and say the exact same thing. Thank god they have that 1 game for 1 month NES/SNES rental though. Then again, people defend that to with someone going so far as to say they think its great because it will force them to play the game rather than build up a backlog of titles like on PS+.

I have a feeling that they were supposed to put a focus on the app and just keep on wording it like it's the only way to either draw attention or just poor PR.

What the hell is this? So backward and stupid. The Vita had those on the device in 2012. It's 2017 and Nintendo shows how incompetent they are in handling the multiplayer. The nerve they have for charging for their online service.
Not to single you out but the number of these kinds of posts in this thread is so tired. Everyone is taking a small glimpse and extrapolating into this horrific inevitability. This statement doesn't "show" much at all, it's vague as fuck.

I can understand not giving Nintendo the benefit of the doubt or expecting the worst but all this shit about how incompetent this move is don't even know what the hell it's going to actually be. Chances are, whatever your envisioning now is not a good approximation of what Nintendo is actually going to do, and pretending like this tells us so much about how Nintendo is terrible is asinine.

They still make really fucking good video games. If they didn't, no one would care.

So, since everybody here is getting it wrong, would you please explain for us?

It's nice to still have optimism about these things.

I guess it's possible, but I feel like Reggie's wording wouldn't be so focused on the app if that were the case.

This. I wouldn't be surprised if he just failed to mention that it can be done on the unit too, but the app is what they want to push because it's "going to be great" and all that jazz.

What is Nintendo smoking??? Watching the Switch presentation, the President of Nintendo did say for online services that multiplayer features would be through an app for "smart devices."

Also parental controls have been offloaded from the Switch into a smartphone app, I can see people trolling others by getting the parental controls app and pairing the app with their friend's Switch and then setting a time limit and setting the Switch to forcibly stop their friend from playing their game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03bAayBtcb0

The parental settings cannot be set to affect individual players but the entire system, @53 seconds: "Just keep in mind that your parental control settings apply to the system, not individual players."

@1:25 a screen that says: "You have reached the agreed-upon time limit, so you cannot play anymore." with just two options that can be selected, "Sleep Mode" and "Disable Parental Controls" which disabling the parental controls I'm sure will require this Switch Parental Controls app so essentially, someone can lock another person out of playing games on their Switch completely.

How do you even pick up in-game audio from the console is you have headphones on connected to your phone?

I really need to see this in action.

I assume that the headphones would be plugged in the Switch, transmitting in-game audio and other people's voices while the cellphone acts as a mic being near you.

Long story short, this is over-complicated for nothing. My first guess was that the smartphone app will act as a paywall, locking X feature for those who aren't subscribed...still, this all could be done in the console's OS.

I can see them thinking this. This, and the app doubles as a store.

Elegant. $$$$$$$$$$$$

Dude it's on their website and it's stated by one of the heads of the company. Reggie isn't fucking stupid. Expect it all to work exactly how he said.

Nintendo as a whole have been hush about their whole online service that people will be paying for. The console launches in less than 2 months. This shit should have been addressed during their presentation. Reggie shouldn't be fired. He's only doing what's expected of him.

It's not possible to use your headphones while your phone is the microphone via the built in one on your phone or headphone mic?

The sound doesnt have to come from the phone but it can go into the phone.

Man the lack of a headphone jack on the pro controller or grip really kills whatever hype I had for this. That is incredibly disappointing. Wow.

One has to be unrealistically out of touch to do shit like this.

I cannot wait to sideload the app day one because my phone 'isn't compatible' just so I can play online. Better yet not do that at all because it will app release will stagger and come out on iOS first or some other nonsense. The future!

I have a feeling that they were supposed to put a focus on the app and just keep on wording it like it's the only way to either draw attention or just poor PR.

Without the ability to use a headset on the controllers I don't see how you can do voice chat without another device

This is just stupid. It's going to have a lot of games I want to play and I like the core concept. Sorry that not everyone is flipping out about this admittedly stupid voice chat solution.

Of course, going to, may have, or hopefully will.

One thing is guaranteed. It has Zelda which is available on another console. All the rest currently is fluffer. This hardware is not needed at all right now, and has yet to do anything right since it's reveal last week.

All the Nintendo Defense force talk about Nintendo not giving clear messaging is eerily similar to the Xbox One DRM launch disaster.

Now, just like then, it is not and never has been about the messaging. It's about the systems in place and again now just like then, they're terrible. Nintendo have been absolutely clear on the smartphone only voice chat/friends/invites/match making, it's not about the way they are phrasing their sentences or speaking to their audience, or how awkwardly they pump their PR machine it's about the fact that their "solutions" are fucking dumb.

It was offensive when Microsoft said consumers just don't understand! in regards to the Xbox One and it's offensive when Nintendo and its defense force say the same thing now.

This all better just be launch woes, because if Nintendo doesn't have party chat and matchmaking on the system itself.... In 2017 or god forbid even 2018........ then... fuck!

I don't think number 1 is true based on the Online Services web page for the Switch, but everything we've heard and seen so far points to 2 being the case.
