region coding on X360?

I know its early, but when do you think we'll start hearing about which games are and aren't region coded? I'm hoping MS will do their usual trick of not bothering, therefore letting me pick some games up from the US.

Another related question, is the DVD movie playback region coded?
Always has and always will be. Isn't a decision Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony makes, but the big corporate assholes of WB, Universal, Sony Pictures etc.

I have a question, how is the Xbox 360's region encoding set up?

Is it hard set from the factory?

or would there be a way for them to have it set by locking on to the region of the first disc put into the system?

I'd like to find this out. Buying a 360 while i'm still in japan would make sense, as it can be done (with hdd) for about $350 american after tax.

Yeah, I'm in Japan too. But it wil be a while before I head back to the states.

And waiting a year for games to be localized (if at all) sucks.

slightly off-topic but i can't make a new thread, so... does anyone know of a reliable list of region free games for xbox? i only found this thread on ntsc-uk.com, but it's incomplete and a little confusing. what i'm looking for is a list of NTSC games that'll work on a PAL console.

apparently yes. if i'm not mistaken, on xbox it's up to the developer and/or publisher to region lock their game. halo 2 is supposed to work on both pal and ntsc consoles.

Football Manager 06 is the first Xbox 360 game that has been confirmed to be region free. Miles of SI Games revealed that at X05.

This is a slightly more comprehensive list of region free Xbox games but it's still not complete I don't think.

I'll be going to Vancouver in a week, so I just might take the risk and get RR6 there, hoping it'll work with the PAL Xbox 360 - which launces the night when I land :D

Chittagong, you sure do travel a hell of a lot. :D :)

I hope some company comes out with the proper accessory for making a 360 international. I fear having to import one to play BH5.

i -should- have a US machine soonish, but i'll be getting games regardless, so i should be able to check out and report which ones do/don't work on the day of the Japanese release (and of course i'll be able to check Japanese games on a US machine)

Is that even possible?

Region-free games (regardless of whether they are NTSC U/C, NTSC J, PAL) work on ALL consoles regardless of region codes. And there is whole long list of games that are region-free.

I'm going over there on the 5th - wanna meet up? ;P

They still have to be specially coded for the 25fps of PAL, though, right? The console is tied to its crystal and the plug, I don't see that a system would be able to do variable video signal output or reprocess 25FPS. So, how's this work if you put a PAL game in an NTSC system.

(And BTW, is SECAM dead yet, or are there still miserable places in the world who use this painful standard?)

Come to think of it, does anyone know what 360 plans to do? Will HD be 720p/60 or 720p/50?

If its 60Hz, what happens if you select non-HD resolutions? Will it be the first PAL60 only console?

It's my impression that (almost?) all consoles, certainly all the majors, have converted said clocked AC power to DC either with a wallwart, an internal PSU, or a combination. Consoles conforming to 50-field PAL has been mainly an excercise in backwards-compatibility with older TVs; many newer games in fact output PAL's linecount at 60 fields, the output being completely programmable going back to at least the PS1.

Euro 360s have 50/60Hz options. It's done by the console (as opposed to the software) like it was with the original XBox

I'm really hoping that Ridge is region free! I'm getting a Euro 360 but Ridge isn't out here for months :(

woah!

So scummy 50Hz only TV owners get shitty frame rate converted games? I don't particularly care as I'll be in HD 60Hz, but thats a bold move IMO by MS

Sorry, I mis-read your question - I didn't see that you were asking about HD rates (I thought you were just asking about normal 50/60Hz)

I'm not sure what it's like for HD refresh rates but I'd guess that they MUST do 50Hz and they'll offer 60Hz for those who can use it. With the amount of video processing options available there's no reason why they wouldn't do it, IMO. But for 480i/480p they'd be stupid to ignore 50Hz gamers. Most people can use 60Hz but they have no idea why it is is better so they just stick to 50Hz

I take it that you're expecting 60Hz as standard then? :D tbh I'd expect 50Hz to be the 'safe' bet, and 60Hz is the one that they might add. I'm sure they will though :D

Let me reiterate.

For HD I don't care - my TV (and any HD Ready TV in Europe) can deal with 720p in 50 or 60Hz. So I'm set.

I'm curious about SD though. From your reply, it sounded like Joe average can select 50 or 60Hz update for 480i. But the games themselves are only 60Hz, and if you select 50, the Xbox converts them somehow to 50Hz?

would be cool, however, I'll leave on 28.11. and fly back to Europe already on 30.11. . . . Talk about time to play Grand Theft Auto on PSP...

That's what it seems like (and that's what the Xbox does). You select 50 or 60Hz in the Dashboard and that controls 50/60Hz modes for every XBox game. I don't know how it's done though (ie is it 50Hz pushed up to 60Hz or 60Hz pushed down to 50Hz). tbh I think PAL games are 60Hz and then scaled down to 50Hz, based on how quickly most NTSC>PAL conversion are. Most PAL Xbox games are released a week or so after the NTSC version

If I can get my hands on a demo unit soon then I'll try and find out because it's been bugging me for ages trying to find an answer :D

ouch. I'm flying out on the 5th, back on the 8th. You'll probably have the same aircrew - play really tired and they might feel sorry for you and upgrade you :)

The X360 must support 60hz in pal-land..

one thing that pretty much guaranties this is the VGA-output.. not many vga-monitors even accept 50hz signals
