If you uninstall Macromedia from your system you won't get any flash ads. Not a single one.

Of course 25% of flash-based websites won't work also :(

Back when I discovered emulators and took an almost orgasmic trip down videogame nostalgia lane by downloading shitloads of 8/16-bit games that I used to love and had nearly forgotten about ('00-01)....oh, and basically getting a NeoGeo on my computer for free....I thought the internet was mankind's greatest invention.

Me too. Well, Trillian, actually...

I also miss the old Something Awful. Jeff K's developer interviews were great, as was the "FPS Survivar" comic series. But now... feh. I haven't bothered to read it in years.

Hotmail... holy shit, I had forgotten it wasn't always owned by Microsoft.

Here is a good link that explains how the internet used to be:

Playing MAME for the first time was fucking INCREDIBLE. I remember my friends couldn't even believe me when I told them about it.

I used to also quite enjoy this online word game called Acrophobia which the You Don't Know Jack folks made (I think it was around the mid 90s).

I remember how great the most basic things would seem, like downloading images or dumb little MIDI programs.

Damn you diminishing marginal utility!

I miss:

Next-Generation Online
Intelligent Gamer Online
Dural HQ
Dimension-S.com
Hardcoregaming.com
Dejanews.com (fuck google groups)

when Audio Galaxy was Audio Galaxy, free, and not fucking Rapspody

when CDnow was CDnow and not Amazon.com

Does anyone remember Kozmo.com? That was the coolest thing back in the day.

Remember when all porn on the internet was free? (I mean, it's still "free," but you didn't have to work to get it)

Remember Netscape?

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
n64.com and psmonline.com - "golden eye is an eye tat is golden"

The Unofficial Squaresoft Homepage - before it became RPGamer.com and when it was updated by JackFrost - probably one of the first web pages I've ever gone to - looking up Romancing SaGa 2 and FF5 info

Downloading Virtual GameBoy and iNES back in 1996-1997 and discovering emulation. I don't think I could have ever been happier.

He wasn't a staffer. He was a freelancer and we all wanted to strangle him.

That was the worst review ever.

Aha! Damn freelancers!

Haha, shit, I've been using the net since '97. =O That was a hell of a long time ago...I remember the old days of N64.com and all that stuff too. Wow, the internet was pretty shitty back then...but the novelty factor alone just made it seem like the coolest thing ever. Heh. :)

One site I do miss is the good ole' Operation N2000 site that got me hooked on this whole gaming msgboard thing (and which led me to this place...)

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
AOL and Fate X 3.0

My brother impersonating an AOL staffer in a chat room and getting me kicked off the service for a month. The horrible, shaking withdrawal pains thereafter.

Downloading porn on the 2400 baud modem that came with my IBM Craptiva.

Definitely N64.com

The day I was introduced to IRC and fservers. Hanging out in a particular channel long enough to finally get 'voiced' and, eventually, the coveted op-hood.

Switching from AOL to the ill-fated Compuserve WOW! ISP. "Surely the Interweb can't be this cheap!"

Yep, unfortunately as our knowledge of things increases our awe of it decreases proportionately. Doom scared the shit out of me when I first played it. Now I realize it was all just Imp cardboard cutouts...

Dude, jeez, you guys are all a bunch of little baby toddlers!

Back when I was on the intarnet, there was no large-scale web! There was Gopher and WAIS! And people used to have scavenger hunts where you'd get a name and you'd try to find out as much about them online as possible! If you wanted fun, you MUDded or played Nethack or downloaded scripts of Monty Python sketches!

And if you wanted phree AOL, you use the code LUGS-LOUSY!

Sega-X ws the bomb yo. We all cussed Sony hype and its propoganda arm Daily Radar during the time after the DC launched and before the PS2. Good times.

fgnonline was great, somebody should bring that back in some form.

the first ISP to have a flatrate! 18 bucks a month! (and then they lost 58 million and went broke)

man, good times. good times. i still have the install cd floating around somewhere.

that was my favorite internet community ever.

i remember being able to 'spoof' people in the chatrooms. just type what you're going to say, hit TAB 3 times, and then type their chatname and what you want them to say.

i miss the old gameinformer.com, when they did updates on AKI wrestling games, giving you a little bit of info everyday, or every other day. revealing a new character, and answering tons of mailbag questions on every update.

i dont miss downloading fansubs in realmedia though. with seperate files for the subtitles!

plasticman.org, I dump a 40 out for you

And being a member of the GIA's forums was awesome, until everyone started getting really pro-Nintendo and you couldn't make a topic concerning Sony, Sega, or the Xbox without getting trolled
