The two-hour "ESPN25 Silver Anniversary Special" will include segments spotlighting ESPN's role in pop culture, the channel's defining moments and greatest games, its notorious bloopers, pun-happy anchor Chris Berman's playful nicknames for players and those wickedly clever "This Is SportsCenter" commercials.
There also will be a tribute to original ESPN anchor Tom Mees (who died in 1996), comedians Jason and Randy Sklar's look at obscure sports covered by the channel and a profile of the NHL's Mark Messier, the one athlete to have played continuously with a team on the major-league level for all 25 years.
With Berman as host, the mood will be nostalgic, often lighthearted and at times self-congratulatory. Still, make no mistake, this is a 25th anniversary well worth noting.
