Replay time: Panzer Dragoon Orta

Sweet merciful Jebus, what a magnificent game. More than 2 and a half years after the game was released, it still holds up to current standards. The graphics are amazing, smooth and creative as well.

I started replaying the game last night after being frustrated with the lack of great games during this month and was susprised by how hard the game is. This is an unforgiving game. No health replenishment every level, no sir!

Some screens of one of the best games this generation:

GIVE US A NEXT GEN PANZER DRAGOON GAME SEGA!

this is the reason i bought an xbox. A fine fine game. A true evolution of 2D shooter gameplay into 3D.

For me, this was probably the most impressive game *graphically* on any system (inc. PC.).

Both on technical achievement *and* art.

It's one I won't trade and hope it works with BC with the Xbox 360.

PDO also had a great soundtrack, Anu Orta Veniya = greatness!

Such a magnificant game, the original Panzer Dragoon is still my favorite in the series, regardless Orta was indeed magnificant.

Yeah, this game kicks ass. It's beauty saddens and mocks me all at once: 480p does not work. Only on this particular game. *Wipes tear from eye*

Metroid Prime and the Wind Waker both disagree strongly with that statement.

Those games look nice, but I think this looks better.

I'm sometimes distracted playing the game because of how beautiful it is.

Any UK (that is to say, PAL) GAFfers who haven't had the Orta experience and would like my copy, send me a PM - it's in good condition, and needs an appreciative owner.

Aaah yes, teh hardcore......teh hardcore......O_O'

I had many hours of fun playing this shit, and a lot of suicide attempts because of frustration.

I is weaksauce :(

People aren't allowed to disagree?

I mean, Orta's pretty damn good-looking, especially past the first stage, but I couldn't put it above Wind Waker. And I didn't even like Wind Waker. I wouldn't put Orta on a pedestal for technical graphical prowess, either. It's an earlier Xbox game, and the screens show that.

As far as the game itself goes, I never finished it. It's in 'the pile'.

This game wont play in progressive scan on my Xbox, so I'll have to hope it's playable on 360 for me to play it.

I'd prefer a sequel to Panzer Dragoon Saga.

An absolute favorite of this gen, smartly molded with influence from PD Zwei. PGR and the sequel to JGR had already sold me an Xbox back then, but hearing about this coming to Xbox was the triple-thick icing on the cake.

OUT OUT OUT!

We're not even making comparisons for crying out loud. Keep your shitty games out of this beautiful game's sight.

Don't want to be rude, but jebus, this is about PDO

BTW, it plays fine in 480p for me. Did you try playing around with the settings? I know there was a trick to getting it to run in 480p.

That's super! Why don't you go post that over in the thread where Orta is being compared to Wind Waker! :P

I'm really tired of Nintendo fans in general--I wish Nintendo would hurry up and announce the Revolution functionality so we can all be underwhelmed and I can stop seeing "SOUNDS LIKE WE NEED...A REVOLUTION!!" in every third thread.

Vennt even politely prefaced his opinion with for me, not that any Nintendo fans stopped photoshopping controller mockups long enough to actually read what he wrote. This isn't a CONTEST. You don't WIN if we all admit that Wind Waker looks "better" than Orta. Whatever that means; the art styles are so different that comparing them is utterly meaningless.

So please keep your speculation and wankery in your separate-but-equal circle-jerk threads and let the rest of us talk about games we like without having to step over the foetid corpses of your irrelevant and unwanted opinions every other post, THANK YOU.

Eh, I was just surprised at the harsh reactions. Let the love-fest continue.

Well, no shit. Let's all end every post with ", imho" and not discuss in a videogame discussion forum.

So please keep your speculation and wankery in your separate-but-equal wank pens and let the rest of us talk about games we like without having to step over the foetid corpses of your opinions, THANK YOU.

This is a thread for discussing Orta, I'm disagreeing with a statement about Orta. I didn't go into some massive persuasive essay as to why I think Wind Waker is a prettier game, I was just taken aback that someone would react so harshly to a one-line post of disagreement.

....I must have been logging into a different gaf for a few years. Those slugs have always been underfoot here.

Holy shit guys. Some of you need to relax. A bit touchy no? As an owner of both games, I think I have clearance to state my opinion.

Last I heard it was some glitch w/ Xbox Live dashboard updates that screws it all up. Only this one game, though. Very sad.

Back to the PDO love fest:

The TGS demo automatically switched between English and Japanese according to your system BIOS. However, the final retail automatically switched between English and Japanese according to the country of origin of your Xbox. I own the Japanese and English versions both, but running either on my chipped Japanese Xbox results in kanjifesta. Normally I'm okay with Japanese, but since PDO is spoken entire in the imaginary language (I think, it's been a while since I've played) well, I don't have much time to read Japanese subtitles while flying.

Sooooooo I ripped both versions of the game, found the localization files, copied the English localization files to the placeon the disc where it looks for the Japanese files, and burnt to DVD. To my utter amazement it worked, and I have maybe the only Japanese-region, English-language copy of PDO in existence. And I made it myself! :D

God I love this game. An incredible amount of polish with a perfectly tight and cohesive atmosphere and art style. Absolutely gorgeous piece of entertainment. And it controls just as well as the best 2D shooters, with multiple paths, challenging bosses.

I really liked the game. The story was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be, and the amount of unlockables is great. The side story missions would have been a lot better had the pod not controlled like a flying turd, though.

How do you unlock the original PD? I beat the game on normal and it didn't unlock, so I'm guessing you have to beat it on hard?

Jesus this game is two and half years old already?
I've gotta replay this... I didn't know it's been so long.
I don't think I ever got around to finishing the Iva side quests thingies either.

Ah, great game. Seeing those screens makes me want to replay it some tonight.

Has anyone else here given any thought to Orta's origin, and how she might relate to previous PD games? My theory is that
Orta is the child of Edge and Azel - that Azel's search at the end of PDS eventually led her to Sestren. She then could have entered Sestren, found Edge, and somehow combined their personal data to create Orta, and give her physical form with some kind of Ancient machinery within Uru.

I'm not certain about the specific details, but I thought she was Edge and Azel's daughter, as per my first completion of the game.

Beat the game on hard or clock something like 20 hours in it.

My favorite PDO memory involves beating the entire game on hard, in one sitting, on Superbowl Sunday. Eight hours of bliss.

Almost made me want to thank Microsoft for wiping my hard drive when I sent the unit in for repair, as I couldn't bear the thought of not having a completed PDO save.

Almost.

Almost.

My HDD was wiped last month when I sent my XBox in for repair too - must be some kind of standard practice.

ONe of the few titles i'll remember this generation for. Its a classic, and will forever be part of my library, sitting next to Halo, MGS3, RE, KOTOR, and Fable

I replayed it about a month ago.

I forgot how hard it was. It was just kicking my ass.

However, many of the things in Pandora's Box seems easier to me than before.

I've been hesitant to try Orta after reading this review a couple years back:

http://www.insertcredit.com/reviews/orta/orta.html

I recently bought a new copy of Orta, but haven't opened it yet.

People generally praise Panzer Dragoon Zwei as being really good but I just didn't care for it as much as I did the original PD. Technically PDZwei was better all in all areas - game length, visuals, multibranching paths, improved score system, evolution of your dragon. But it just wasn't as fun. Is Orta more of the same?

Azel rocked though.

PDO is the main reason I bought my xbox as well. Easily one of the best looking games of this generation and an absolute blast to play too. It also has one of the best unlockables, the original PD. Now I don't have to pull out my Saturn everytime I want to play it. IIRC, you only needed to play for five hours or beat the game on normal to unlock it. One of my favorite Xbox games to date.

Haha.. I also found the game quite hard when I started playing it back last night. I had originally beaten it and had gotten fairly good at it, but last night it kicked my ass.

WHAT!? BLASPHEMY!

Game Rankings' Average Ratio for PDO is 90%.

The game is simply as good as it gets when it comes to an on-rails shooter with fantastic graphics, multiple paths, gorgeous art, and fast paced and varied gameplay.

That review is terrible. He got hung up on the very simple transformation system, a very well thought out addition to the franchise. Don't listen to that tripe, its a fantastic game from start to finish.
