A longtime campaign operative of Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. resigned his state job yesterday after admitting he had been spreading rumors on the Internet about the personal life of Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley.
Joseph Steffen, 45, said he gave the governor his resignation after questions about his postings on www.FreeRepublic.com, a well-known conservative Web site. The postings discussed O'Malley's marriage [...]
Steffen said his resignation was prompted by a visit yesterday from a Washington Post reporter armed with the Web site postings. He used the handle "ncpac" while writing on the Web site.
Catherine O'Malley described the effect the stories were having on their four children, who are between the ages of 14 and 2, saying 7-year-old William had insisted last week that both parents sign his report card.
She said William told her: ``'If daddy doesn't sign it, then they're going to think that we're in a divorce,' and I just looked at him and my heart broke.''
Several of Steffen's co-workers said in interviews that he parachuted into agencies, set up an office with a statue of the grim reaper on his desk and began assembling lists of people who should be fired.
"I had been advised by my boss that he had a hit list," said Tom Burgess, a former state Department of Human Resources administrator who was fired after Ehrlich took office. "We were all very concerned about him."
Of course, the guy denied starting the rumors.
