Jesus, are those GoW pictures beautiful. I still need to pick up the game.
you have really missed something. all the fuzz about it was right, it truly is a masterpiece.

Ahh show GT5 at TGS Polyphony.

Without debating a perfect order, RE4 must be right in the range of the best looking PS2 games wich are for me:

MGS3, Jak3, King Kong, GT4 and God of War.

Yep, I just stood still and admired
Olympos
for like 15 minutes.

Soul Calibur 3 will be out soon.
I think it will be the best looking fighter on PS2, possibly of any console this gen.

But, I guess we are talking about games out now.
I loved God of War.

MGS3 in game impressed far less than RE4 in game. Dithering in RE4 won't change that, either.

MGS3 was stunning in the real time cut scenes, but once it jumped to gameplay the visuals dropped dramatically.

THIS

IS PERFECT

MGS3's graphics remained exactly the same in cut-scenes and during the game itself. You haven't played it so really just don't even bother.

i think it's instructive that several ps2 games are visually competitive with the nearly perfect ps2 port of re4, whereas re4 is clearly and indisputably the best looking game on gamecube. i'm not suggesting that ps2 is more powerful than gamecube. i'm suggesting that gamecube developers are generally less talented or put in less effort. judging purely from software, ps2 thus appears to be the more capable hardware.

(p.s.: i vote zoe 2)

...No.

That isn't fair to say that developers are less talented or are lazier on Gamecube. There's simply more of them on Playstation 2. You look at 9 out of ten games that are cross-platform, and they will either look identical or better on Gamecube. But you'll find more "gaming gems" on the Playstation, because they have far more 3rd party support than any other console.

Don't insult programmers and graphic artists who make great games, because they didn't make your jaw drop with OMGWTF graphics.

RE4 is by no means the best looking Gamecube game. Metroid Prime 1 and 2 easily take that honor. They are far cleaner, more polished, and genuinly awe-inspiring from start to finish.

This games still amazes the hell out of me, I had to do double takes on a lot of the scenes and was like "This is coming from the PS2?!"

Makes me wish for a remake of SH1 with the SH3 engine.

Also, how often do sequels come out that look significantly worse than an earlier version? SH4 looked okay, but not even close to 3. I guess the arguement could be made for Devil May Cry 2 as well. And maybe Tekken 4 (compared to TTT).

Good god that SH3 picture looks phenomenal.

MGS3 does look a little different in cut scenes but just because they can optimize the engine for specific scenes. Plus the scripted animation and everything makes it look unbelievable. God I love that game.

mr. jones -- more developers working on ps2 wouldn't explain it. the best developers working on ps2 would. but you're right -- where i said "developers" i only meant to refer to artists and graphics coders, and i can't really assume from inferior results that they're less talented or don't work as hard. perhaps they just don't have the same resources as their ps2 counterparts.

and while mgs3 probably uses more detailed models in cutscenes, so does re4. and so, i expect, do most games. if the dropoff from cutscenes to gameplay seems more dramatic in mgs3, it's only because its cutscenes are directed so exceptionally well. and you can hardly hold that against the game. am i arguing with olimario here? my bad.

Bullshit they did.

You're a moron.

P.S.: MGS3 doesn't use less detailed models in-game. Easily noticeable when you're
dragging EVA around
(or looking at Snake's models in the menu screen, only difference is that the game runs at 60fps there).

Of course not. You would only be suggesting that notion if RE4 on PS2 looked the same as RE4 on GCN.

How much of a dfference really is there? Does anyone know? There's already been some hilarity with people confusing screens between versions.

Err? The last stage fighting
The Boss
with the real time flowers blowing in the wind. That's gotta be one of the most beautiful gaming scenes I've ever witnessed.

IGN referenced slightly downgraded animations and textures in their hands-on IIRC...but then again the PS2 version also has true widescreen and (maybe?) enemies that don't disappear.

I agree that the scene is beautiful and that the game has stunning graphics, but if the in-game graphics are the same as the cutscene graphics they must be doing something terribly wrong because I'm much less impressed with the ingame.

Go watch the original trailer. Everything is done ingame (with the exception of the GTA and release date scenes) and you get lots of closeups of the characters. It's clear that its the samething as the cutscenes.

Anyway the ingame even from the MGS cam looks great

The chase scenes in MGS3 were in essence playable cut-scenes.

I think MGS3 and SH3 are probably the best looking games on PS2. I wasn't that impressed with GoW's graphics, frankly.

That last MGS3 pic is wonderful. I can't wait for Substinece. I can't play the old view over head camera. I need the new and improved camera.

SH2? you must mean 3? i mean, even if you liked 2 more you must admit that 3 is much, much better looking :)

I hope we get a new trailer soon. There is one place in RE4 that I am a bit anxious to see work out well on the PS2, the lava room. Simply put it is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen this gen.
