Resident Evil 4 Sales Thread

Right, as always I know the first 4 posts will be "this thread will blow up" "doomed" etc, but hey.

Some facts:

REmake

360k Japan (~140k first week, had some good legs though)
510k USA
370k Others

1.24m total

Resident Evil 0

450k Japan (~200k first week, xmas sales to offer a bit of a boost)
520k USA
220k Others (ignored in Europe)

1.19m total

for reference:

Devil May Cry

650k Japan
770k USA
740k Others

2.16m total - Capcom's biggest game this gen.

Could RE4 outdo DMC?

I think it's got a good chance in the USA, and should at the very least come close in Japan. Europe will be interesting. I reckon a safe bet would be:

600k Japan (300k first week)
1m USA (400k in Jan NPD)
500k Others

2.1m total

I'd love to see it do much much better than this though, I reckon a possibility:

850k+ Japan
1.5m+ USA
650k+ Others

3.0m+ total.

Devil May Cry

650k Japan
770k USA
740k Others

2.16m total - Capcom's biggest game this gen.

I didn't know this was a RE game?

I hope it sells well on cube, if only to reinvigorate Capcom's faith in exclusives on Nintendo systems, going into next gen.

Well the significance of it was:

As you say, it's not a RE game, nor is it on GC or anything else, so I'm not quite sure what point you were trying to make apart from trying to be "funny" I guess.

TekunoRobby said:
DMC was the evolution of a failed Resident Evil 4 prototype. In a way you can say it deserves to be in that list.

It's also an action-adventure and so a similar game to compare to RE. Onimusha also did around 2 million (although over half that was Japan alone).

I'm not sure I want to hazard a guess, but I do think that Broshnat's numbers are a bit too optimistic (especially for the U.S.). I'd love to be proven wrong, though -- this game deserves to sell.

How about breakdowns for all Capcom's multiregion adventure/horror games this gen for comparison?

-Resident Evil Code: Veronica (DC)
-Resident Evil Code: Veronica X (PS2)
-Resident Evil Outbreak (PS2)
-Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 (PS2)
-Onimusha: Warlords (PS2)
-Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny (PS2)
-Onimusha 3: Demon Siege (PS2)
-Devil May Cry 2 (PS2)
-Dino Crisis 3 (Xbox)
-Clock Tower 3 (PS2)

If it can be of any indication, Re4 is doing well on both Amazon jp (1st) and com (on top ten) top sellers since many days...
Usually these charts reflects well the effective retail sales

I'd love RE4 to move 3M units but comparing its sales to DMC's sales does not make any sense.

PS2 base - 70M, GC base - 15M. 5% of PS2 users buying a PS2 game = 3.5M units sold, 5% of GC users buying a GC game = 750K units sold.

My RE4 "dream sales" (for 2005):

US - 1.4 M
Japan - 1M
Europe - 700K

Total: 3.1M

The "sad truth - people do suck" sales:

US - 450K
Japan - 400K
Europe - 300K

Total: 1.15M

Why would I want RE4 to sell better than DMC? Many reasons, for example - Capcom could say "Well, it was worth it [the exclusivity deal]. We may do something similiar in the future on Revolution".

I'm very surprised that everyone is giving Resident Evil 4 such modest estimations. I would put money on it topping 1 million in Japan, US and Europe, well on its way to a 4 million total.

-Onimusha 3: Demon Siege (PS2)
-Devil May Cry 2 (PS2)
-Dino Crisis 3 (Xbox)
-Clock Tower 3 (PS2)

Will see what I can do:

-Resident Evil Code: Veronica (DC)

470k Japan
500k USA
170k Others

1.14m total

-Resident Evil Code: Veronica X (PS2)

340k Japan
580k USA
400k Others

1.32m total

-Resident Evil Outbreak (PS2)

470k Japan
530k USA
290k Others

1.29m total

-Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 (PS2)

230k Japan

-Onimusha: Warlords (PS2)

1.10m Japan
570k USA
350k Others

2.02m total

-Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny (PS2)

1.10m Japan
550k USA
340k Others

1.99m total

-Onimusha 3: Demon Siege (PS2)
700k Japan
290k USA
300k Europe

1.29m total

-Devil May Cry 2 (PS2)

500k Japan
540k USA
460k Others

1.50m total

-Dino Crisis 3 (Xbox)

30k Japan
60k USA
20k Others

0.11m total

-Clock Tower 3 (PS2)

150k Japan
100k USA
50k Others

0.30m total

All can be found on www.capcom.co.jp financial info pages (usually in Japanese), with the odd estimation / extrapolation just to tidy things up.
Note, PS2 numbers don't include Greatest Hits for some reason I don't think.

Some other GC titles for comparison (upto dec 2003):

Smash Bros Melee 4.44
Super Mario Sunshine 4.19
Mario Kart: Double Dash 3.58
The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker 3.33
Luigi's Mansion 2.46
Mario Party 4 2.29
Metroid Prime 1.87
Starfox Adventures 1.69
Mario Party 5 1.64
Pikmin 1.52
Animal Crossing 1.34

Although by now you can add upto million to most of them...

Can't believe people are predicting so low. Have you seen the stir that this game is creating?? It's probably more hyped and anticipated than MGS3....

Among these boards yes. I have no idea about the casuals. You could be right though, but I prefer to be low ;)

It's on GC, though, a system that a) has a low userbase, b) has a reputation of giving "mature" games the shaft when it comes to sales, and c) is currently suffering from a downward trend in momentum/sales.

I think RE4 will sell well for a GC third party game, maybe even going on to become the best-selling third party game, but I have serious doubts that it'll do anything much past two million...and just reaching two million would come as a surprise to me.

Agreed, and of course the user-base.

But still

How can you see adverts for this and not wanna get it? It should sell so many cubes.

Before Capcom made that stupid PS2 version announcement yes. Now a lot of people will just wait instead of buying another system.

do the casuals know about that though? ;)

Yeah, I don't think the future PS2 version is going to matter much right now. Even my Gamestop employee friend was surprised to hear that the PS2 is getting RE4, which means he has been telling customers that they can only get it for the GC.

Timbuktu said:

that could be because lots of people hated MGS2 and also because of halo2 and GTA.

I hope this game sells well it really deserves it. I think it was a good idea to not release it during the holiday season as it probably would've done worse than MGS3(nov sales).

Timbuktu said:

Yeah, lets:

700k Japan
prob 800k in USA

by the end of 2005.

Europe is a big market for MGS.

Looking at MGS2:

850k Japan
2.2m USA
2.5m Others

5.55m total

MGS3 should do 4m without much trouble, but less than 2 for RE4??

Deepthroat said:
Haha that's the tricky question, I guess they dont :P

But on the other hand, do they know what a Gamecube is? ;)

:lol

At this point I have no idea how well or how bad RE4 is going to sell on the cube. I just hope it does well enough so the Revolution could get RE5. (which I sadly doubt)

Wait a year?? By which time you can bet the GC version will be down to budget price.

I think RE4 will do well on PS2, but two thirds of sales should really be on the GC I'd have thought....

I think RE4 is going to do much better then RE0 and Remake. RE0 may have been a new game, but it was still built in the old style and only appealed to the group that still liked that type of game. Remake did well for what is basically just a retelling of the original with not much new added. RE4 is breaking new ground on a console that could use some more AAA titles so I think it is going to sell very well. It should do over 2 million worldwide. Maybe even 3 million if good word of mouth keeps up.

So for Japan we have:

600k for me (sticking my neck out)
400k Ani
1m dream for Borys, 400k more realistic
500k SantaCruZer
650k SolidSnakex
600k Dark Dragon

USA:

1m for me (sticking my neck out)
500k Ani
1.4m dream for Borys, 450k more realistic
550k SantaCruZer
800k SolidSnakex
800k Dark Dragon

PAL:

500k for me
300k Ani
700k dream for Borys, 300k more realistic
350k SantaCruZer
350k SolidSnakex
400k Dark Dragon

I have been cursed by the negativity of Ani :lol

I think it will sell well, but suffer a similar fate to Ninja Gaiden with plummeting sales later on.

Japan: 150k first week, 550k total
USA: 300k first month, 700k total
Europe, other: 500k total

I'm shocked at people knocking it in Japan.

I could really see it doing 300k++ in it's first week.

In fact, I reckon this will be the first info we get on just how much of a hit the game will the, the first day sales in Japan. I know it's out in the US first, but takes a while to get any figures usually.

If it can do over 200k on it's first day in Japan, the it'll do well.

Very low estimates. Some of you should be ashamed for having no faith. Resi 4 has been top of Famitsu's most wanted since it was announced - Its going to explode in Japan. I'm going for atleast 600,000 in the first week in Japan.

Total sales

Japan - 1.5 Million
US - 1.6 Million
Europe - 1.2 Million

It'll be one of the better selling third party games hopefully.
It sounds like it deserves to better them all.

Are they actually advertising this by the way? Or does it start tomorrow?

It's NEVER gonna sell 1.5 million copies in Japan - my guess is 700-800k in it's lifetime.
SSBM did 1350k and it's the best selling GC game over there.

Us and Europe sounds about right.

Shenmue 2 was #1 on the list for awhile (even topping FF) and sold a total of 125k overall (92k in its first week).

What??

Shenmue did about 350k in Japan, 200 in it's first week.

If RE4 could do 500k+ in week 1, that would be some feat...

I can see it having some decent legs though.
