Resident Evil 4 Sales Thread

I'm going to jump aboard and get in my predictions.

US: 1 million
JPN: 600k
EU: 500k

Even the casuals where I work are talking about RE4, which is an occasion in itself due to neither GT, Halo or GTA being discussed.

I think it will do much better. It's getting a lot of tv exposure. All the game stores have had the demo forever. Good magazine coverage for some time. There's probably a fair number of people like myself who have heard that it plays "differently" than the others and would never have bought it otherwise. I think it will help Cube sales a bit.

800K US
500K JPA
250K EU

over the year

PS2 port will do fantastic in Europe, expect a good 500K+ their also.

Not sure about first year. but long term alot! Like Rogue Leader and the other 3rd party exclusives they sell at bargain bin prices for ages pushing a decent number.

I really do think people have no faith.

I'm stuck for numbers now though. I've said everything from 2-3.5 million.

I reckon it should do 2 million. I thought months ago it should do 2 just because of the name and switch to 3D.
Now I've seen the reviews and the attention it's getting on here alone (there must be at least 10 threads on the go at the moment apart from the official one which has had 40,000 views before the game has even come out), and now I'm tempted to say it could push 3 million.

Unfortunately, GAF isn't really a great measuring device of what's popular in the rest of the industry.

If it does 2-3 million, I'll be very, very impressed. It'd have to be a system seller to pull that off, I think.

I believe it will be...

I know GAF is pretty hardcore etc, but I think it's safe to say RE has enough of a name and history to appeal to casual gamers as well. It just needs some good advertising and word of mouth now...

What's the ad campaign like in the US?

Supposedly very good. I hear the ads have been running on several channels quite frequently. I don't watch that much TV anymore, but I didn't see any on Fox. For their sake, Nintendo shouldn't have pulled another one of those "SHOW IT AFTER 11:00!" nonsense commercials.

All signs point to it doing well then.

If Luigi's Mansion can do 1.5m+, and with all the rubbish that does a million on PS2 (EA games especially) then surely RE4 can break a million in the US alone.

It could also suprise us all and do some great numbers in Japan if people take to it, and sell a lot of cubes.

First Week
North America: 310,000
Europe :115,000
Japan : 240,000
Total
North America : 1.1 million
Europe : 525,000
Japam : 800,000

Here's one of the US commercials, it runs pretty frequently:

I saw the end of another one today which showed some giant thing jumping out of the water in front of Leon.

Hmmm... if it's gonna do 800k in Japan, it'll need to do more like 400-450k first week.

I'm very surprised that everyone is giving Resident Evil 4 such modest estimations. I would put money on it topping 1 million in Japan, US and Europe, well on its way to a 4 million total.
Why, though? RE4 is getting great reviews so far... but so did Metroid Prime and it did nowhere near 4 million. The previous REs on GCN got decent reviews and they haven't approached 4 million combined. At least through November NPD numbers, no third party game GCN game has passed 1 million in a single territory. To come close to what you're saying would be an unprecedented GCN happening to say the least.

Sonic Adventure 2 Battle has already done it. We just don't have the official numbers yet... and might not get them for a little while.

Yeah, but Super Metroid only did 1.5 million. Metroid 2 on the GB only did 1.4m

2m++ for Metroid Prime was a big success. The game is virtually non-existant in Japan.

RE did 5m+ (1.7m in Japan)
RE2 did 5m+ (2m in Japan)
RE3 did 3.5m+ (1.5m in Japan)

It's not inconcievable that RE4 could do 3 million, easily pass a million in the US and get close to a million in Japan.

Gonna make some final RE4 predictions:

Jan 2005 NPD: 500k (GC jumps to 350k)
Japan first week: 400k (240k first day, cube jumps to 60k that week).

Totals:
Japan 850k
USA 1.45m
PAL 700k

3.0m

Optomistic maybe, but who knows?

North America: 700k
Japan: 500K
Europe: 500K

Broshnat, your DMC number is wrong. It sold over a million in the U.S. 650K in Japan.

No way will it be the best selling Gamecube game in Japan. I'm gonna say 600,000 by December 2005.

USA about 750,000 by years end.

Europe's hard to call, but we won't ever get any overall sold-through numbers. I'd say around 650,000 throughout PAL territories.

I went to EB and GameStop both in Johnson City, NY, and both stores had only a few copies left. This game definitely deserves every single sale it gets, and then some.

Well i don't want to make number predictions, as it's pretty pointless, but no doubt it'll outsell REmake and Zero.

I am confident though that, with PS2 sales as well, this will easily be Capcom's best seller this gen. And the overall sales are all I care about, as I just want to make sure that whatever console RE5 ends up on next gen, it's in the same vein as this one.

If you combine both the PS2 and GC sales it'll definetly be their best selling game this gen. RE is still pretty popular with the PS crowd.

I'm gonna be cautious and say ...

600k (USA)
450k (Japan)
350k (Europe)

If RE4 is a big hit on the GCN though, it would help Nintendo a lot going into the next generation, but I just don't know how much of the 16-35 year old market they have on the GameCube and how much of that will come out to support a non-Nintendo, M-rated game like Resident Evil 4, especailly in January with the GCN on the down side of its lifespan.

Hey guys, might want to adjust your estimates just a tad, because there will be +1 sale tomorrow from yours truly!!!!!

Maybe with the boost that NGC got in dec, was the 700 K number right? then RE4 can pickup sales for people looking at new games. i'm hoping it can do 3 mil and become the system seller, but i'll predict, by years end.
US: 900K
JP: 450K
PAL: 250 K
total: 1600K
still feel that its optimistic but.

This one is really hard to call. There's never been a GCN game in this situation. So, in the style of Olimario, I will present a point form list of pros and cons.

Pros:

- Getting amazing reviews
- New emphasis on action opens game up to new audiences
- Stunning graphics and art
- Strong advertising campaign

Cons:

- Released on system with smallest installed base
- GameCube has least robust mature audience and software library
- "" has negative momentum and seems to be sliding toward permanent budget console status

Unfortunately, it seems like the limiting factor on this game's sales will be that it was released on the wrong console at the wrong time. Unless this game beats the odds and proves to be a system seller,it's not going to reach the sales it probably deserves.

Predictions (by end of 2005):

US - 750k
JPN - 675k
Europe - impossible to judge

I hope it does really well on both the GCN and PS2. It is a spectacular game. It'd be nice if it could get one million copies sold in North America on the GCN simply because the game deserves it.

So the game gets negative points because it was released on the 'wrong console'? Negative momentum? Isn't that an oxymoron? If the GC had negative momentum it would be selling a negative amounts of units, which isn't possible.

Call me crazy but it sounds like you haven't even played the game.

You don't have to play the game, his comments on the state of the GameCube and where it stands marketwise are dead on.

RE4 has a bit of a problem in that many people who may be interested in this type of game (a balls out, bloody, violent, M-rated horror/action fest) generally may not have a GameCube, which is better know for Super Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon games.

Hopefully the GameCube faithful come out and really support this game.

Just my 2 cents... I originally owned a launch Gamecube, then I sold it. I was waiting for either A) the end of the Gamecube's life or B) when there were at least 4-5 solid games I wanted to really play for it before I bought it again. Yesterday I picked up a used Gamecube ($70) along with Eternal Darkness ($12), F-Zero ($13), Rogue Leader ($6) and Resident Evil 4 ($50).

Thumbs up.

Call me crazy, but look at the title of the thread. My comments were with respect to the game's sales potential, not its quality. And *please* pardon my poor choice of words - the console's sales rate is decelerating; the GCN does not have actually have negative sales momentum. And while we're at it, let me also apologize for using the term 'momentum' when discussing a non-physical entity. Obviously, sales numbers cannot have momentum, since they do not have any actual mass. So again, please accept my apologies. Of course, since you knew exactly what I meant by 'negative momentum', none of this spew is really necessary.

And yes, I've played the game, and even though it was just a demo on a shitty EB kiosk, I managed to enjoy it. I may even buy it, which is something I never thought I'd be considering, given that I hated the previous entries in the series. Failing a purchase, it seems destined for a week long rental whenever I find enough time for it.

My apologies. My sheer love for the game not withstanding, I forgot the context of your post was in a thread about sales. Carry on.

My viral marketing is succeeding

+1 sale: late xmas gift for me.
+1 sale: forced a friend to play it today, he told his girl, she's buying a GC&RE4 since she loves horror
+1 sale: other friend played & watched with me and buying a used GC&RE4 tomorrow

3xRE4 & 2xGC

Guys, you want this to sell? Make people play the first 20 minutes (up to the
village and let them fight a bit and get their head chopped off by the chainsaw guy.
That alone is enough to sell systems! Remember, GC is only $70 used!

I would love it if this thing sold like crazy but I'm not gonna get my hopes up. Getting some great WoM though that's for sure.

Still waiting on my copy from Outpost. :(

The key to maintaining strong, steady sales is keep up the TV commercials and ads in magazines.

Halo 2 and GTA: SA still have commercials going on to this very day. Capcom will need to keep reminding consumers about RE4, and not to mention that more reviews will hit the average joe in about 2-3 weeks. I am hoping that Capcom can keep the marketing going until E3.

I think your right in that is has the name to appeal to casual but I think this game would eat them alive. Once word of mouth gets around that it can be a difficult game I think that will turn some casuals off to be honest. My two cents

As a casual gamer, I think the difficulty so far is good enough to keep me interested and keep me wanting more :)

If RE4 does 2-3 million worldwide, which I think is VERY possible given the buzz (yes shock I'm AGREEING with Broshnat here) it will be the highest selling 3rd party game on the GC ever. It's this game like #2 on Famitsu's most wanted or something? If MGS3's placing was anything to go by, it should easily do like 500-600k in the few 2-3 weeks and then proceed to eat up 800k-1million by the end of it's cycle.

The GC userbase is definitely holding it back and if RE4 PS2 was not announced I actually see this selling more Cubes, but even at such a disadvantage I think the buzz has been pretty much as overwhelming as the MGS3 buzz, I expect cautious lower numbers at first then it can only pick up from there based on word of mouth alone.

by my little secret system of finding the numbers for a game before they come in I have RE4 at about 200,000 US copies sold so far :)
I was dead on with my Fable prediction by using the same method. I'll update with a final estimate.

This is in no way an exact science, but I'm usually pretty close.

Edit:did more research tack 50,000 on to that.

resident evil 4 needs to sell at least a million in the us by Feb. Go RE4. Sell this game to your friends... convince them its AAA+

on a side note:

where is MP2E at? Bombed? :lol :) :(
