Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC

Compared to what?

Compared to texture packs for both games. Have you seen MalDo's Crysis 2 textures compared to the "HD" textures from Crytek themselves?

Crysis 1's textures were muddy and low res for just about everything.

You want a good example of texturing out of the box.

Serious Sam 3 BFE. That game has some incredible texturing.

Ive used texture mods for both of those games and they are great improvements. But the comparison here is games at release. Crysis had incredible textures for a 2007 game. Especially considering how large the levels were. According to wikipedia SS3 is a 2011 game. Not quite a fair comparison to a 2007 game with massive and highly detail levels.

It's not like I'm going to skip RE4 because of how poor the textures are. I'm just happy that a hopefully competent port is coming out finally. But the textures are pretty bad and were of a lower quality even considering when the game came out.

Well if we're taking into consideration when the game came out, then we also should take into consideration the platforms the game was released on as well. RE4 was originally released on two 1.5 GB miniDVDs. Crysis is about 6.3 GB. RE4 simply did not have the luxury of storage for higher res textures.

I think the new HD textures being included with this release are an improvement, but they could be better.

The game looks great and all but some of those new textures look a little too clean. Like some of the wood looks too new for a little old farming village in the middle of nowhere thats run by faux-zombies.

While this is true, keep in mind you're talking about the game that has a castle with a tram system and a room with molten lava in it and fire-breathing dragon boats.

I went ahead and pre-ordered, haven't had a copy since the Wii Edition that I traded in for other games. When I heard the game had been ported over to the MT Framework engine, that was it. Every game I've tried that uses that engine has run silky smooth and looked fantastic for me.

Could you post a screenshot or two that show what you mean? Just curious because I didn't get that impression.

Didn't Serious Sam 3 come out four or five years after Crysis?

They used the same picture to create the texture, but the artist that works in first version inverted colors of the picture and changed saturation/contrast/etc to achieve a different final result.

Fast edit of two parts of the fence and pointed of picture similarities

So, stupid question, if I pre-ordered this on Steam, where are my pre-order bonuses?

Edit: Oh, on launch day. Okay.

Looking Good.

It's weird. This game was so immersive for me, that my mind remebers this game in this fidelity. But i know it looks much worse on gamecube. In fact i played it recently and it looks nowhere near as good as this. But it looked so good for the time that your mind somehow fills in the rest.

Had to double take on the user name. This guy knows what he's talking about! :p

I'd say they've done good work on everything so far, but I wish they kept the highlights on that texture, gives it a washed, mildewey flavor, and makes up for the game's lack of specularity somewhat.

Does anyone know where I can host raw video?

I've got a 60mb video I'd like to host to show a comparison between playing RE4 at native Wii resolution and at 1080p this HD rerelease will offer.

this isn't really a 'remake' tbh

Yep, wrong choice of words. I was typing it quickly.

I just uploaded a high-bitrate version to Youtube.

Comparing the native res Wii version to rendering at 1080p.

You'll probably be able to tell which is which.

This was done in Dolphin. No Anti-aliasing was used.

The 1080p example was rendered and recorded at 1080p while the native resolution was rendered at the games native res and recorded as it would be displayed on a 1080p screen.

The video itself is in 4K because the higher the resolution, the higher Youtube allows the bitrate to be. So it was uploaded as a 4K video, but it was rendered at the resolutions listed above.

Edit: Here's a GIF showing the difference between two frames.

Because it's a GIF it's limited to 256 colors

A capcom guy posted in this thread early. He said those effects were done using gamecube hardware features so it can't be ported (at least without investing a lot of money developing the effect from scratch).

I'm assuming that you've heard the bad news?

Since he said he hasn't composed anything on his own since 1996, that would mean the same person composed both soundtracks either way. (And that guy wasn't deaf. Although, that was also a ruse according to Niigaki.) Unless he's indirectly shifting responsibility of how bad it was on Niigaki and actually did compose it.

One thing doesn't add up, though.
According to Niigaki, he composed 20 songs for Samuragochi over 18 years, and received around seven million yen (US$ 68,950) for his work.
So who were his other ghost writers? The Onimusha OST itself has more than 20 songs.
Go away, you. :|

Update: More than 60fps is supported by the engine and can be forced by the player, but unfortunately stuff will break. :-\

From the updated FAQ: http://steamcommunity.com/app/254700/discussions/0/558746089193596812/

Q: What are the available graphics options?
A: RE4 is optimized for 1920x1080 at 60fps. Anything beyond 1080p has not formally been tested but we have seen it perform fine on 2560x1600, 2560x1440 and 1920x1200. The game will also have anti-aliasing up to 8X, three shadow quality settings, HD/SD texture quality toggle and one other "fun" option we'll keep to ourselves for now. Tinkerers will also find other graphics options that work best for them :)

Q: What is the maximum frame rate?
A: The in-game menu provides two options - Fixed 30fps and Fixed 60fps

Q: Is the frame rate capped at 60fps? Can I choose higher frame rate to take advantage of my 120Hz/144Hz monitor?
A: The game offers 30fps or 60fps locked through the in-game menu option. Deviating from these two settings unfortunately causes unexpected side effects or game-breaking bugs since certain animations are keyed to the frame. Undocumented settings may allow you to deviate from the 30/60fps cap, but this has not been tested, nor supported or warranted by Capcom.

Well, at least they will give the option to the player through a .ini file. Maybe in eg Mercenaries the problems the higher than 60fps framerate will cause will be less or not exist at all.

Has the game been on sale yet anywhere?
I know that's a odd thing to ask for something that isn't out yet but typically GMG offers up the 25% off codes even for preoders.

Hmm, 3 preset gamepad control schemes. I think at one point they said the gamepad controls would be customizable, so it's disappointing to hear that they're now presets.

I think they only said keyboard would be fully customizable, but honestly just how customization do you really need the RE4 gamepad controls to be?

You only use like 4 buttons for the majority of gameplay.
