Resident Evil 9 Began Development as An Open-World Multiplayer Game – Rumor

Hey, at least they figured out it was the wrong direction. I'm all for developers trying new things, but this sounds like it shouldn't have left the pitch session lol.

Man, why is Capcom SO adamant about multiplayer and Resident Evil? It's SO weird to me. I feel like the only thing that got it right was Outbreak, and bizarrely enough everything they've tried after it was nothing like it, lol. At least they backed out of it here.

I'll still never forget working at PAX (can't remember if it was East or West) and helping setup the booth for the weekend and saw Capcom's booth was setup and I heard they had something new with them. I ran over to check it out as they were letting exhibitors play and I soon found out it was Umbrella Corps. My immediate reaction was, "Wtf is this and why?!" lmao.

Hey you guys know how we make those linear, narrative focused single player resident evil games that everyone seems to love?
Well, we should make one that's not like that at all

IMHO this conpect would ONLY work if it's not a 'open-world', but a 'open-place', kinda like racoon city on RE3 (of course, the original version, not that shitty remake) or (and im stretching the concept here) the village on resident evil VIII

Edit: of course not the multiplayer part, that is stupid

Ah yes, the same Dusk Golem that also said the PS5 version of RE: Village was near unplayable a few months before release and that RE3 remake was going to be semi open world with trains serving as fast travel points.

As you can see, he's clearly reliable.

"Began development as"

DMC started as Resident Evil 4.

That POC from Retro turned into Metroid Prime.

What matters is that they give us a true sequel to RE Village and stop fucking around.

I could be wrong but I'm sure Dusk Golem was just a moderator on Capcom's Forums during the GCN era and has zero actual connections.
if it's him, he also claimed to have contacts and was proven wrong multiple times there.
Especially with he insistence on RE4 staying exclusive to Nintendo.

Resident Evil 9 began development as an open-world multiplayer game, and though the game was rebooted, the current version retains some of its original premise.

Sounded awesome, shame they cancelled it. RE9 will probably be another game set in flat corridors.

They're adamant about it because they got it right multiple times:

Everyone can see that there's something there, but it's up to Capcom themselves to figure out the best course of action, which means they will keep throwing stuff at a wall until something sticks.

I would pay actual money for a journalist to go abroad and simply suggest to the RE devs to try out Lethal Company. Guaranteed Outbreak reboot/successor once they realize LC exists and has a large fanbase behind it.

Edit: And I'm suggesting this because Capcom has been completely oblivious to popular games and fan demand in the past, so of course they would probably be oblivious to Lethal Company's existence.

Did they? I mean, of course I didn't really think to include Mercenaries and I wasn't sure if it was really multiplayer based as I've only done solo. Also, I never touched Revelations 1/2. But I was always under the assumption that Outbreak was the one the community loved the most.

Spinoffs whatever fine...a lesson or two, just don't fuck up a mainline entry. And this here is a clear example if no one really cares about the RE IP going off track just stop fiddling with MP then just move on. People love this series for a reason, just give them exactly that and grab the money.

I don't mind good open world games, but an open world Resident Evil sounds disgusting as hell. Just give me another linear, but chilling story, Capcom.

Even if they change course on this one (probably for the best if it's a mainline entry), they should still experiment with another Outbreak-style multiplayer spin-off. Those games were great.

Leave all the DBD rip-off and PvP multiplayer games like Resident Evil Resistance and Re:Verse in the trash and give the people what they want.

They did. Raid Mode and Mercenaries have their own fanbases, but obviously the one everyone misses the most will always be Outbreak because it never got a second chance outside of a generation that wasn't really known for online play.

Some people (myself included) are even bold enough to say that Raid Mode is the true Revelations 2 experience, due to how well built it is as a mode. It might as well have been another game on it's own.

could've sworn this rumour has been posted here several times in the past year.

Let's keep reposting year old "rumours"

Doesn't mean much if the same shitty core is there.

Granted stuff like Devil May Cry started out as one thing (i.e. a Resident Evil game), but at least it started out as something good.

With this, I think it's more a matter of "Start off with garbage, likely end with garbage."
