'Resident Evil' Series to Get a Reboot
"Resident Evil: Afterlife" is yet to fall into production, but Screen Gems has been reported to plan a fifth "Resident Evil" movie. According to Bloody-Disgusting (BD), the studio is looking forward to do a quasi-reboot to the sci-fi thriller and tentatively calls the project, "Resident Evil Begins".

The decision to develop this quasi-reboot allegedly was taken as Screen Gems looks to replace leading actress Milla Jovovich. On the reason why, BD pointed out to the studio's fears that Jovovich, who has been confirmed to return for "Afterlife", will be too expensive to be kept on board although she is married to producer Paul W.S. Anderson.

The studio has yet to officially announce its plan on the fifth movie. However, BD claimed that the reboot project will tell the story of a special military unit that fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.

"Resident Evil: Afterlife", in the meantime, continues Alice's battle with the diabolical Umbrella Corp. as she races to expose a virus that is threatening mankind with extinction before a new race of clones called the Undead finishes the job. Paul W.S. Anderson serves as director as well as producer, in addition to writing the script of the movie that is set to be released in U.S. theaters August 27, 2010.

Fuck, just make a movie that follows the same plot as one of the games (preferrably 4 plz)

These movies could be so awesome but they never are

So it's the first movie all over again?

wat

Expose a virus?
One would think everyone knew how evil Umbrella is after the last movie. The planet seemed kinda lifeless.

Replacing Milla and Anderson is long overdue!

Considering the next movie involves more than one Alice, paying Milla Jovovich for 'multiple' roles must be expensive!

A reboot? Like the movie was good to begin with... :lol

AAHAHAH LIKE BATMAN BEGINS! SO IT WILL BE AWESOME!

I like the Resident Evil movies (as rentals). Getting back to basics (scaling the scope of the movie down) is probably a good idea. Maybe do a male for the lead character this time.

This. The first one was aight. I actually liked it. The later movies became more about feeding Milla's ego than anything else.

I wouldn't mind a reboot if it meant they would actually follow the game plot. This sounds lame though.

Oh and day one for Afterlife.

This. I mean what the fuck? There are like 30 RE games out there.

What they need to do is build a movie around the Mansion Incident and go from there. Hell, RE4 (I mean the game, I refuse to give these movies numbers) may be decent as a movie.

I can't even believe they aren't even rebooting the up-coming movie. How can you continue the movie plot after the last one revealed that the entire world is a wasteland?

And they are all god awful stories. As much as I love Resident Evil series, the plots are no better than the garbage being put out in the movies.

These movies just don't work when hollywood thinks it can improve on the working formula that the games had. Nothing that they make will touch the originals, because they just keep trying to make it into a one man/woman show. It just comes off as cheesy every time.

Problem is they will never work outside of games, because thats what they are good for. People think of resident evil as something more when it's nothing more original or interesting than your average sci fi original movie. The games we love for being fun games in a long running franchise, as a movie it will never work outside of being nothing like the games.

You got really bad plots, cheesy villains, b movie like storylines.... how is this supposed to turn out into a good movie without being completely removed from the games?

A Resident Evil 5 movie would be nice.

You say this, but I bet you can't think of any video game to movie transition that hasn't been botched along the way. I suppose I would rather see them try a straight-to-movie strategy just to see how it works since hollywood has sucked at it so far. The RE stories can't be any worse than stuff like Transformers, and Spiderman 3 anyway.

Edit:
At least it took developers numerous iterations before they made their main characters superpowered.:lol

Read a script of the cheeseball dialogue for RE4.

Then imagine a movie about that.

shudder

The game is fine, but the story and dialogue are retarded.

So now the studio system is looking to reboot mildly successful franchises.

It comes as no surprise that this move is from Sony.

The thing is, they should still be able to recreate the atmosphere of the game and provide a dark, gritty horror picture that focuses on a relationship or two throughout, while forcing the characters to make difficult moral decisions along the way. The stereotypical "I have to shoot someone who got infected from my team" works great in these types of movies, if it's done right.

I can still see them pulling off a good Resident Evil movie. The first one wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. I did feel they captured the appropriate mood here and there, and the ending was near perfect, in the way it was shot and everything. A shame that was apparently never really built upon. I have not seen the sequels, but I have seen and heard enough to believe they are likely atrocious.

Movie adaptations shouldn't be made to follow the games. The stories in RE suck just as bad in the movies, but I enjoy the games and the movies (except the third one).

And some good movies based on videogames: the first Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider series (at least i enjoyed them), and the Silent Hill movie.

I wish they did as everything was originally planned.

Hire Romero, and use his script. It was fucking epic. Such a shame they fucked it all up. =/

that's racist.

Not really. The story could be that these people got accidentally infected by the virus and are no longer human. Their expressions and the moment they were caught on camera in this picture does make them look like zombies to an extent. Just because a picture has a photoshopped white guy getting ready to shoot at a zombie army of black people, does not automatically mean it's racist. The story arc could be that these people are eventually turned back, or that they are made to be sympathetic, as it is revealed that civilized culture is the true monster.

Or something like that.

Those were pretty good efforts(big fan of the SH movie). The question is if they deviated all that far from their game counterparts? I don't think so. They took what made the games great at the base, and built upon them. They managed to add to the characters personality, and the peripherial characters were also there. I think the RE movies would benefit from having a more involved Claire, Chris, and Wesker, but I guess you don't see it that way.

This guy nailed it though.

RE4 would work as a movie with some (and I mean some, not rework everything some) reworking. Remove the game-y puzzle scenes and some of the cheezier lines (bingo? come on...) and it would work fine as an intended B-style action movie. It's quite a movielike experience already.

Craziest part about the way they do these movies is that it'd be so much more cost effective to just adapt the original Raccoon City games. You could adapt any of those into something relatively competent and easily keep the budget below or very near to $10 million. Yet they keep allowing Anderson to continue making Mary Sue storylines about his girlfriend who's apparently starting to get greedy.

And I'm looking these films up, NONE of them were all that financially successful, what the fuck is going on here?

I'm sure they could, but fans constantly asking for the movies to be like the games when the movies we are getting aren't much different from the actual games.

Really fans should be asking for something different that just borrows from resident evil. The script that Romero did for RE is a fan favorite thing, but really was very different from the actual game. A more serious attempt at a RE movie would be good, but it's going to definitely change what we know of Resident Evil and NOT follow the games.

The first one is a fairly lousy movie that was enjoyable when I was younger. The second one was trash, and the third one is absolutely miserable. Like others have said just follow the games. The plots are less ridiculous, and with some solid direction could be really atmospheric and creepy.

Bullshit. The movies are nothing at all like the games, not even a little bit.

RE1 Budget 33mil = 102mil worldwide
RE2 Budget 45mil = 129mil worldwide
RE3 Budget 45mil = 147mil worldwide

They all made more than double their budgets, and that's not counting home video sales. SONY at one point even noted that it was one of it's most profitable film franchises. It doesn't make insane amounts of money, but they all have made good profits for SONY.

I hope they just continue where they left off.

I want an army of naked Alices invading China for two hours ^^

Zombies, mutants, t-virus, nemesis, b movie plots, bad dialogue, one dimensional characters, plot holes, etc.... seem to be emulating the games fairly well in spirit. A good resident evil movie would need to change alot from the games to be effective. Just look at the god awful CG Resident Evil movie. That was EXACTLY like the games, and people bitched about it sucking....

We want a movie that's based on the games, but not like the games. Otherwise we are just gonna constantly keep seeing shitty b-movies with RE names slapped on.

Let's talk about this over a coffee. :D

And I'm all for reboot. However, knowing Hollywood, the reboot could be as 'awesome' as "The Legend of Chun Li". In that case DNW!!
