Resident Evil Zero: does anyone find this game fun?

My favorite of the OG RE games that came before 4. It sounds like your main gripe is that these classic games had methodical, slow gameplay and are not at all fast-paced. They lack modern QOL improvements and are not known for being all that easy to play through.
If there were no loading screens or loading masks, my experience with the game would be quite different. As is, I just cannot stomach it.

I own every mainline Resident Evil game (except for 7 & 8), Zero is the only one I've ever finished.

I thought the character switching was pretty cool and ahead of its time for a GameCube game. The fixed camera is a real struggle though.

Nah. It was basically giant 🐸.

  • [00:15] The episode revisits the troubled development of Resident Evil Zero, a prequel exploring the events before the original mansion incident involving S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team.
  • [01:13] After finishing Resident Evil 2, Capcom considered supporting Nintendo again via the Nintendo 64DD, planning an original RE entry to leverage its expanded storage.
  • [02:45] The earliest version wasn't a Bravo Team prequel but a side story about two punk-style civilians, Annie and Billy. The concept shifted to a prequel starring Rebecca Chambers, while Billy evolved into escaped convict Billy Coen.
  • [04:28] Technical limitations of the Nintendo 64 (storage constraints, cartridge architecture) made it difficult to include pre-rendered backgrounds, CGI cutscenes, and voice acting. Ambitious ideas—like constant involvement from Albert Wesker, co-op play, and even running zombies—were cut.
  • [06:40] The commercial failure of the 64DD (around 15,000 units sold) forced Capcom to reconsider. Attempts to adapt to standard N64 cartridges also proved too restrictive, leading to the project's cancellation—temporarily.
  • [09:11] The project was revived during the Capcom 5 deal, as Shinji Mikami pledged RE exclusivity to the Nintendo GameCube. RE0 moved to the new hardware, requiring nearly all N64 assets to be scrapped and rebuilt.
  • [12:35] Development pressure mounted after Mikami announced a short turnaround following the Resident Evil remake. The partner "zapping" system had to be re-engineered for disc-based loading, solved by storing duplicate room data in RAM for faster character switching.
  • [14:21] A controversial design decision removed item boxes, forcing players to drop items manually across the map. While intended as a challenge and homage to Sweet Home, many found it tedious. Enemies like the Eliminators became infamous.
  • [15:14] Released in November 2002, RE0 received solid but muted reviews. Critics felt classic mechanics (tank controls, ink ribbons) were outdated compared to Capcom titles like Devil May Cry, Onimusha: Warlords, and competitors like Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Sales reached ~1.2 million—below expectations—contributing to the formula overhaul seen in Resident Evil 4.
  • [16:19] Later re-releases improved its legacy. The 2016 HD Remaster added "Wesker Mode" and helped total sales surpass 5.3 million units by 2020. Rumors of a remake persist, fueled by leaks from Dusk Golem and resume hints tied to Capcom performance capture projects.

I actually prefer this over remake. Yeah first time every player will struggle, because of the stupid hookshot, which should have its seperate slot like the lock pick in other games.

But that's the only negative I have with this game. Everything else is just a matter of skill. This might be one of the harder re games, but once you know how to engage the enemies, it's fucking fun.

Also the unlockables are goat.

Played this through for the plat for the first time after platinuming re1 remake since I was doing them all before 9, and I really liked it. Apart from the bat boss, what stupid design lol
