WASHINGTON HEIGHTS (CBS) At about 4:10 p.m. a large retaining wall on the Henry Hudson Parkway collapsed and spilled tons of debris into the roadway near 181st Street, forcing a complete shutdown of the northbound lanes.

"It has brought down rocks, it has brought down trees, and there's no sign of what else might be in there," WCBS traffic reporter Tom Kaminski reports.

An FDNY spokesman said that there were no injuries, but that firefighters were continuing to comb through the debris on the roadway. A nearby apartment building at 1385 Riverside Drive was being evacuated and nearby commuter trains were passing the site at reduced speeds.

"If you're headed up to the George Washington Bridge, you're advised to take the Harlem River Drive or Major Deegan Expressway instead," Kaminski advised. He added that a seven-mile long backup back downtown to 57th Street was reported.

Whoo boy.

How does a retaining wall of that size just collapse? There hasn't been any rain or anything like that in the past week. The wall has got to be at least 4-5 stories tall and it's been there for decades. Should be interesting once it's explained for us engineering types.

I must be really stressing over politics these days because I autmatically thought you were talking about Bush. :lol

Good Evening, this is Fox News. Tonight's top stories: FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR FEAR WEATHER...OH NO IT'S FEAR FEAR FEAR PHEAR THE FEAR!

I hate it when the news reporters talk with the 'officials' about stuff like this.

Idiot1: There may be people trapped under this rubble, is finding them a top priority?
Idiot2: Absolutely, they are doing everything they can at the momment.

continue for 45 minutes while showing the exact same picture..

I saw a bit of this on the news, and I guess one of the building's had reported seeing a problem with the wall, and a construction firm found a bulge in the stone. Guess a collapse was more imminent than they thought.
