Revolution´s Official Name?

www.nintendo.com

Sorry if old or really old but I did a quick search and I don't recall seeing this in the Nintendo page.

In the upper pat we get...

GAME BOY - GAMECUBE - REVOLUTION - NINTENDO DS

That looks like the names of the systems...if Nintendo is not considering to use that as the final name why use it in your homepage...any ideas?

Maybe because it's the only label they currently have for it, and if you wanna find info on this machine that's what you'd click on?

I got a quick trivia....

Nintendo 64 was Ultra...
Gamecube was Dolphin...
But someone knows or remembers what the codenames for NES and SNES where?

P.D. oh and GBA was AGB, right? (Advanced Gameboy...so much for a codename...)

i like the name "Revolution", why not call it that.

If we're going by codenames, why wasn't the DS first called Nitro?

I bet they stick with Revolution as the final name.

I also like the Revolution name, and hope they keep it as the final name. It's one of the best names for a video game system in recent years.

IMO it should be called Revolution. The name is fitting, and it automatically places itself as superior to the PS3 and 360 as far as concept goes. Ie. It's not just another console that's been done for years and years on end.

I take it from that webpage that the revolution will not be able to download GC games but play them only, as any mention of downloadable content doesn't mention GC games.

You know, I never did watch Atlantis. I was sort of interested in it, but then people said it was basically a rip off of Nadia and a poor one at that. Oh well, maybe one of these days I'll rent it :-p

Nintendo 64 was Ultra...

Wasn't it Project Reality? Ultra 64 was the official name for quite a while though (certainly had print adverts in the UK for Ultra 64), but a codename it was not.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Deathcraze is correct. Project Reality = codename, Ultra 64 = temporary "official" name (which I believe was changed due to some copyright infringments on the word "ultra"?).

IIRC they changed it from Nintendo Ultra 64 to Nintendo 64 to make a more cohesive global brand name for the system.

Ah, okay. I read about the Nintendo Ultra 64 to Nintendo 64 transition but I had some foggy recollection about copyright being difficult to get for "ultra" as a brandname (probably thinking of something else), but it makes more sense that Nintendo simply wanted to contract the name to Ninteno 64 or N64 if you prefer. NU64 does seem a little less catchy afterall :D

I'm waiting for Project Reality.

Edit: wasn't Project reality that crazy theoretical virtual reality machine that was written about in NP?

I think that was the offical reason they gave, but they supposedly did have some trademark issues with "ultra".

And also I think they won't go with revolution for the same reason. It's so widely used by so many companies it greatly increases the odds that one of them is going to find a way to say Nintendo's usage infringes on their trademarksomehow (and of course they wouldn't come forward when the name was announced, and Nintendo could still easily change it, they would wait until the system was on shelves and branded). I mean Microsoft picked what you would think is a pretty obscure name with "Xbox", and they ended up having to pay another companye for the name.

GameCube 2. You saw it here first. :lol

Seriously though, I wouldn't be surprised. Both Sony and Xbox kept their console's core name in their successor's moniker.

i'd be suprised.... it wont be called Gamecube 2

That's Nintendo X for ya.

Yeah, GBA was called "Atlantis" at one point, just like "Nitro" was the code name for the DS. (But we never knew that until after the final name was practically decided)

No, it was the codename for N64.
Then what am I thinking of? there was an article which went into pretty good detail on a theoretical virtual reality system that they said could be available by 2050 at the rate technology is growing. You could play games in your dreams because the machine would send impulses to your brain. :lol

Project Reality ----> Ultra 64 -----> Nintendo 64

The first two were codenames for N64, however, U64 was a arcade hardware, and codename for the system...Its sad, because it was more recognized more than N64 ever was, because some big names were powered by it.

Ultra 64 was never a codename - it was the official name, at least in America (I believe in Japan, the system was always to be called N64?).

Regardless, the system itself was unveiled as the Nintendo Ultra 64 IIRC. Later, it was annouced that the name would become Nintendo 64.
