Revolution Controller Video

Wow, this is amazing.

To people saying "omg how can this work!?!"

It's different, but at the same time it's really not in practicality.

Let the C- explain:

You have the analog that controls basic movement -in all- games. Now, the difference is, instead of pushing a button to achieve a command, you simply move the remote in that direction.

More simplified.

Instead of 'PUSHING' button.

You will:

Instead, "MOVE" the remote.

PUSH -to- MOVE

PUSH -to- MOVE

Nothing is changing. The output command is the same, the only difference is the input.

Given, I think they could have incorperated a kickass gryo in a typical controller. I mean, thinka bout it. Imagine the PS3 controller having the gryo built in with sensors. And maybe a little pointy thing at the top to replicate a 'wand' or 'flashlight' or 'gun barrel'

I guess we shouldnt expect much in the way of multiplayer games then.. save for a few gimicy party games.

That's a pretty silly statement, given that both Smash Bros. and FFCC have been announced for the system.

And that port at the bottom to plug the analog in,
I guess it can be used to plug in almost anything nintendo can think of.

Man, the idea's are endless.
I can't WAIT!!

One hand for a Sword, the other for a shield... hehe...
I can imagine some sweet FPS Sword Combat online. FINALLY.

The controller doesn't erase everything they've said about games for the last year or more.
Does that really even matter when they're still making games like Zelda and MP, which are quite obviously not simple action games? If they're still capable of that, I see no reason why this new controller should prohibit them from carrying on.

Damn, who put that video together? That fucking rocked! Controller design/finish/colors are totally sexy. Revolution is now definitely going on my Must Have list. An early Kudos to Nintendo. It looks we're going to go at least another round with three major players, even if they're not all playing exactly the same game.

I honestly think Nintendo no longer cares about ports. They know competing directly with Sony and Microsoft won't get them anywhere, so they're going their own direction -- entrepreneurs searching for a their own type of entertainment. Nintendo knows hand-me-downs from the X360 and PS3 won't sell consoles.

Also, what we have here is the answer to using light guns on all tv formats. Now I won't have to lug my machine to the small tv to play gun games.

So what happens if everyone cant sit directly in front of the tv, whats going to happen with games that require split screens. You split it 4 ways and it will be impossible to aim. I just get the feeling this is DS all over again. Sure you could use the touch screen for analog controll but its complete garbage compared to an analog stick and just ends up being terribly frustrating.

Games like Zelda and Metroid, as in, there are more? They didn't offer enough in that vein even with a regular controller. Now with the Rev and their comments about games being too complex/long/difficult and "let's not make epic games" things don't look too good in that respect. Maybe I'll be eating crow about this, but I doubt it.

Yep. Nintendo can't compete head on with Sony and MS. I did a strategy paper on them in business school back in 03 and when I did my porter's 5 forces analysis, I said Nintendo was a differentiator and created value by producing different products rather than compete or price and my prof argued with me. He felt Nintendo was just like Sony. I was right.

As a business, I think they'll do very well this coming gen playing to the niche market. I think people confuse being a niche player as being irrelevant. I think GAF will be surprised how many units the revolution sells.

Lots of industries have powerful and highly successful niche players that are more dnamic and better run than the giants. I only need to point to the car industry where GM's market leadership means absolutely nothing and #4 Toyota is doing better than they are. Considering Sony and MS will bleed each other to death, there's no reason for Nintendo to compete in that area.

This controller will be hot sex for mario kart.
Turn sidways.
A = Gas
B = Brake / slide
D = fire weapon forward, back, left and right
Twist al a wario ware for stearing

and online to boot ;)

Here's my idea- Nintendo needs to put this entire clip in front of all the big movies coming out this fall/Christmas. Harry Potter, King Kong, etc... They need to start selling this concept ASAP!

Next spring and summer they could start releasing commercials/trailers for specific games and show how the controller is used for those games. Example: half the commercial show the guy swinging the controller around like a sword and the other half show the sword fighting game itself with all the sword flailing action. Repeat with baseball, golf, fishing, etc.

Thats exactly what im talking about. It would be much eaiser and the gameplay would be much tighter if they let you use a regular controller on the next mario kart instead of forcing this "innovation" on people.

Take your finger off the gas to fire a weapon....I dont think so.

I don't think it's working exactly like a lightgun. I imagine it'd be as impossible to aim as it is in split screen Halo. The controller, I suppose, is used as the camera like a mouse for PC FPS.

HOLY SCREAMING FUCK.

Revolution is looking like the coolest fucking goddamn system in the history of earth.

I'm so unbelievably pumped for it after watching that system. This platform completely has the potential to make the next major advance in how people play games. Those example clips, while exaggerative, were extremely telling in just how ANYONE could play this thing and really get into a game without the game having to be mind-numbingly simple.

I'll take 10.

It's not a lightgun as there is no lense on the controller, unless they make one as an add-on attachment.

The controller is basically looking like a free form mouse in 3-D space. It can be used as a pointer, which, if it lives up to its intended purpose will make it ideal to strategy games and FPS.

Imagine playing a Masters of Orion type game and waving your hand around to select planetary systems, fleets, and ships. ::drools::

Not really, you would turn the controller sideways, thus being a "regular" controller(although not really with no analogs), but you won't need them. Because you can then "turn" the controller left or right like a steering wheel to steer. use the A button for gas and the B button for the brakes. And then use the directions on the D-pad for weapons and the jump command :)

Wow, its a Revolution indeed! There is so much potential for this controller. I can't wait for them to show us the actual games that use this.

I first read an article about it before seeing the video and thought "Why are they showing the remote control? I hate when they bury the meat of the story behind flu...oh. Wow."

I'm still wondering why not have gyroscopic mechanics in a standard shaped controller; that 3rd party and even 1st party dev teams could use it as much or as little as they need, or not at all. The DS has shown us it has worked that way.

After seeing this videoI can see the potential this has for sword fights, baseball games, first person shooters.

I thought the controller sucked when I first saw it.

I'm now convinced...

Swinging the controller like a sword and having that reaction on screen would be SEX.

MOTION CAPTURE EVERY POSSIBLE MOVEMENT, AWSOME.

NEXT GEN ZELDA WILL BE THIS WAY, CONFIRMED.

Agreed.

Nintendo, incredibly, has remained very profitable despite losing their stranglehold on the video game market over the years. Nintendo certainly won't be dead with the Revolution. The controller accessories alone are gonna make them a lot of money and it seems like they are aiming the console to be easy and cheap to manufacture. They don't have to be #1 or even a strong #2 to stay alive.

I think he's talking about the a and b on the bottom, labeled X and Y in some pics. Tilt the controller sideways and it makes sense

Thanks for using a good example and wording it better than I did in my post. =P

It was only an analogy. Sony might be struggling but their games division has done very well for them and the Xbox business plan had no hope of earning a dime, it was just a big push by MS to get a foothold. To historically speaking, its not the same as the car industry. not even close.

But when you have a technological pissing match between MS and Sony and high dev costs, it's hard to see them being very profitable this gen. MS has already blinked by unbundling the HD and making it optional. Sony can blink or come out with a heavily subsidized or very expensive product. And the pressure will continue as the hardware prices drops since both MS and Sony would have the incentive to cut prices rather than pocket the the different. They're hoping for game sales and volume of sales to make up for their profitability gap. But if MS does take Sony's market share this gen, then those volume projects will be out of whack. If MS doesn't gain share, Microsoft will be in for a world of red ink and Sony will do allright in terms of profitability. At the end of the day, I believe in the PS3 more than I do in the 360. So draw your own conclusions about who i think will be more profitable in five years.

That video really shows off how awesome the damn thing can be. It may take a bit of getting used to, but it could lead to some amazing experiences. Especially the part where the girl was playing Mario with the remote. Swinging it as if it were a sword, pulling it back like it were a lever. It just sounds so awesome. Multiplatform releases will have a hard time on the rev, but we'll see when the time comes for that.

Some people are saying it's just a mouse, but it's really much more than that because a mouse is limited to movement on 2 axis (2D space) while this control scheme can be used on all 3 axis (3D space). A mouse can only move in and out, left and right, this device can control up-down, in-out, left-right. If anything this type of control scheme has more in common with what's seen in Minority Report than a standard mouse. So yeah I guess it pretty much is the Power Glove isn't it? :D

That would be completely awesome if someone mods the PowerGlove to work with the Revolution. :lol

You can try that out if you have gyro mouse. My friend has one. This one IIRC. It's a great HTPC remote, but I wouldn't play games with it (not with the gyro part anyhow, it works as a normal mouse too).

While I do have some doubts about the new controller, I thought the idea behind it is very interesting and refreshing. I just showed the video to my two female roommates who aren't really interested in games. Guess what, they were very excited and really love the idea. I can see the whole untapped market Nintendo was talking about now !

i will honestly say thats the fastest serving of crow and humble pie i have ever eaten. holy fuck the revolution will own!!! all 3 consoles=MINE!!!

As long as my girlfriend signs on and we can do some erotic dancing gyration gaming, im all for it.

tbh, I think it's a great piece of hardware. I don't play consoles much nowadays, but much PC online gaming (bf2, css, wc3, wow). That new way of controlling, Nintendo presented, got me really exicted for videogaming again. If the games are right and they got good support from 3rd parties (the comments from them sound very good, especially the ea comment), then this is a no-brainer.
Though I hope the graphics will be good and that they don't ONLY concentrate on the controlls.. but just think about it: you got a xbox360 and a revolution at home.. now the new madden hits the market - let's say the graphics gap is the same as with xbox and gamecube and ea is fully supporting the new technology and the new controll methods of the revolution - which game would you pick?
Man, it can be so genius if Nintendo plays their cards right..

Ok can someone answer my questions:

1) Does the controller vibrate or have any FF?

2) Is it an actual light gun/laser pointer? If so, does this mean that Revo games which use the laser pointer function will have no HD or Widescreen support?

3) Is this Nintendo just clearly going after the mainstream/female/casual market? Do they really feel hardcore gamers are going to embrace this controller?

4) How long can you hold you flail your arms around in front of you before they become tired? Because you're going to be finding out in 2006!

5) Finally WTF are Nintendo smoking man? Because I got to get me some of THAT!

Seriously though, it really is cool to see Nintendo just flying in the face of convention and doing something new. I hope it pays off.

1) It has rumble
2) It's working with sensors you put on top of your tv and it sure works with HD and widescreens
3) They are going for everyone who can have fun while sitting in front of a tv
4) We will find out soon enough.. but I'm trained (thank you, Samba de Amigo) - so no problem. :P
5) Must be some gooood stuff

Looks cool and all. I'm gonna hold off on calling it revolutionary until I see what the actual games look like (how complex the gameplay can get using these new functions). But standard games should be fine on that controller.
