Revolution Controller Video

Honestly, I think consumers are going to find it very attractive. For one, it looks adult. It doesn't look like a video game system we grew up with. If the controller were sitting on your coffee table, normal people would think it a tv remote. Second, and this goes along with its look, selling this thing in stores alongside other sleek electronics such as the iPod and PSP will only emphasize the RVN. It's controller really completes the package. It's very modern and a step forward in design for games. By that I mean it is trying to break out of the video game mold and bridge a gap between your home electronics (visually). I think it has a good chance in retail. Imagine a sick Metroid Prime 3 demo taking advantage of the system's graphics and it's unique features.

I understand movement is done on the analogue, but i don't think the pointer really works as an aiming mechanism (in the traditional way we play FPS games).

Sounds like you are suggesting that to aim we don't point at the thing we want to shoot at, but at a point in the real world that represents the distance the camera needs to move to put the reticle over the target. That sounds at best not as good as dual analogue and at worst totally unplayable.

I think the only way to make it better than dual analogue is to embrace the fact that you have what is effectively a light gun. Make the dpad move the viewport and the pointer move the reticle (imagine Goldeneye with the shoulder button held down all the time, and you can still move with the analogue obviously). That way to shoot something you point at it on the screen and pull the trigger, but there might be issue with the sensitivity of the D-pad being used for turning.

Actually I think based on the drilling noises and the screams, we're supposed to assume it was a dentist game.

Edit: Nah, I wasn't late with this at all. Anyway, it's nice to see some positive impressions for a change. I just can't wait to get my hands on the Revolution. I'm going to E3 come Hell or highwater.

Agreed. If things go fine, we could be in front of the biggest shift in the videogame industry since... well... probably since it was created. Topping even the step from 2D to 3D. But time will tell how things go.
 
this system still has cube controller ports. how hard would it be for third parties to just program for that.
1) nintendo doesnt have much third part support now for gamecube. its like there giving them the big FU
2) its innovative and looks fun
3) nitendo franchises will ALWAYS be good

Sounds exactly like a mouse look. Tweak the sensitivity to your preference and you're good to go. Easilly playable, and the one handed design makes it easy for both righties and lefties. A little tiring though. Wouldn't want to wave the thing around too long.

Props to Nintendo for going out on a limb and making this the standard Revolution controller. Everyone here knows that gamecube controller compatability means compatability for any game that can't use this new control scheme. But making this a standard means it won't get lost in the pile of peripherals, like the eye toy for example. Pretty much every Nintendo game will be designed for it guaranteed, and I'm pretty sure you'll see some interesting spin offs of franchises from 3rd parties as they try it out. As a dev, how CAN'T you want to try it out.

Only thing that sucks is that 3rd parties will probably keep their big budget titles to the standard control scheme until Nintendo proves that this has selling potential.

If people latch on to this, then Sony and M$ will both add some kind of sensors to their base controllers (regardless if they adopt the remote control design, which they won't) and you basically got youself the new analogue stick.

EDIT: And when I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if M$ or Sony DID adopt the remote control design...as long as it was only a supplememt to their standard controllers. At the base it's just a remote control, which both Sony and M$ have for their systems anyhow. It might be nice if PS4, Xbox 1080, and Super Nintendo Revolution all had a remote like this and a regular controller standard in the box

I take it you haven't played DS Metroid? This is beyond dual analogue control (which barely passes for control seriously) and even beyond mouse control. Touch screen is cool for FPS. But Rev is cooler.

I suppose the centre of the screen is not always aligned with the wand as in when you move your hand the screen moves. Its more like move it to the left and the screen will follow and centre. Leave your wand pointed left and your screen will keep rotating round in a circle. Meanwhile you can aim and shoot around the screen rather than the bullets go right into the middle of the screen and you gotta move your screen around to shoot. Seriously this interface is gonna be amazing. You point where you wanna go, turn left, see a door come up on screen? Centre the wand by pointing it at the door.

If only they had quality force feedback. Rev is dead on to have the best deathmatches now, no way can a conventional controller compete with this, it mimics the aiming and wlaking around, headshots will never be the same.

after the initial shock, I'll wait until I see some games to judge, and the acessories, there must be some of of normal controller you can attach the revomote in the back, or something like that, since Ubisoft is STILL porting splinter cell 4 for the rev
 
jesus christ! ive just woken up and damn the controller could be great, although im getting the feeling it might not work with alot of things like sword game because ive tried these sword games at the arcade and they are good, but not 26hrs worth of good. this controller does look pretty cool tho and im sure nintendo will release atleast one more, more normal controller for b/c.

In the end of the video itself when the guy turns the TV off, if you look at the TV, it looks like a widescreen TV. Is this a sign that HD is a possibility with the new nintendo system or just a sign to look stylish??

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.

It's something that's just as true for the DS - not every game uses the DS's unique features. But some multi-platform titles do, like The Sims 2 for example. We hope other developers will do the same and look at ways their multi-platform titles can make use of the Revolution's features.

im guessing that they didnt show it because they want the focus to be on this new style of controlling games.
 
My six-year-old and eight-year-old will get a kick out of it. So will my wife, and it looks like it would be a great system to play when drunk with friends.
 
I think the control is brilliant. It's honestly something anyone can get into. Now I just want to see some full-blown games making use of it.
 
Talked to some peoples at work about this, mostly mainstream gamers, who havent ever heard of revolution nor saw the pics this morning, and they were all intrigued with what i was saying, someone even said "about time, i hate console pads, i hate dual analogs".

I think nintendo has a winner, if devs support it, i think good years are ahead of big N.

Rev is dead on to have the best deathmatches now, no way can a conventional controller compete with this, it mimics the aiming and wlaking around, headshots will never be the same

I was thinking while at work, have you ever thought how boring it looks to play videogames with traditional pads? Just look at someone gaming on his sofa. Rev's controller will put more life in gaming interaction.

This is the first time i have ever said this but IAWTP

I don't know if this has been already pointed out in the thread, I only had time to read so far and am in a bit of a hurry, but I found this amusing, apparently they made a very recent change to how the controls were labeled:

The bottom buttons were labeled X and Y for a while, with the GB Micro-style "b" and "a" printed beside/below (depending on orientation).
 
Nintendo’s R&D are a bunch of dam fools. After the game cube you would think they would make a controller that more suitable for MANY different games. Throw out all fighting games with this controller. most of the sport games are going to be tough I mean come on, swing the controller as if it were a bat< SOUNDS GREAT!@ but remember all those arcade games that were like that it just doesn’t work. I think we might be witnessing the fall of Nintendo, PLUS it’s not like are going to get more of the market by marketing it to old people. It’s a proven fact that its 7x harder and more expensive to acquire new costumers instead of keeping the old ones. WHAT A BUNCH OF DARN FOOLS, I cant soul caliber with that stupid thing, and let me guess just throwing it out the next Legend of Zelda game you get to swing LINKS sword by using the controller, lame, I mean what if I just want to chill and relax with out moving my god dam arm, let me guess the next metriod you get to shot with the controller like its a gun.............why would you not just make a gun with an analog stick, thank god I work for an entertainment company (I work in R&D) that’s not a bunch of fools....

Someone should post a new topic specifically pointing out that quote. I almost did earlier, but wasn't sure if it'd be necessary. But I don't think some people have heard it.

AFAIK, for the more traditional games/third party ports, the remote plugs in as the "core", which means it has all of the wireless and motion-tracking stuff built-in (meaning the controller "shells" will be cheaper than buying a WaveBird or whatever). It didn't make sense to me why they were talking about it plugging in to Bongos and all that, since the motion tracking wouldn't be good for an instrument game like that, until I realized it's a way to make ALL the game controllers wireless for very cheap.

Exactly; it may seem like a bit of a cheat, but a lot of the DS titles could be made really, really cool on the Revolution. Like, you could have little interludes in the surgery where everything is moving really quickly and the head of surgery is yelling at you, or something. It could make the experience much more dynamic, that's for sure.

Let's remember the Revolution is said to be MUCH cheaper to develop for than the other two, so it might be in there interests to support it.
 
Devs WILL support Revolution because Nintendo is the only one going in a different direction, I'd go so far as to say their survival depends on Nintendo.

PS3 and Xbox 360 games are already so expensive, games developers are going down everywhere or else merging. We're talking the biggest names joining forces because the previous gen was very tough financially. This next gen is supposedly going to blow the previous one out of the water in terms of cost and resources - companies are going to suffer.

If Sony and Microsoft keep going down this road, games will soon be costing as much as space ships lol. Obviously a road we don't want to go down. Already Hollywood style budgets are a huge strain - Nintendo with Rev and DS are a very good prospect for every developer.

Both also feature technology which can really go far.

Personally I can't see why there are so many nay-sayers. Nintendo is finally breaking the trend of "Look at our machine it is so powerful, the graphics will be amazing. Money money money money, MOOOONNEEEEY!" This controller is going to bring new design aspects to games. Sure you won't see many ports which could be considered a downfall, but it's going to offer a new level of interactivity. Could this be the next big jump for games like 2D to 3D? I think so.
 
Heh. I'm actually less interested after seeing the media. Basically I see their push is centered on movements that are far more comfortably done and played with a regular controller. Players and icons are best suited by small movements that translate into abilities we don't have ourselves for the most fun, imo. The skill in a baseball game might be in timing that even the least athletic can do in hitting a button correctly translated through a character onscreen imbued with the speed to match a visual reaction. A baseball game centered around swinging a pretend bat isn't much of a fantastic experience as most of aren't professional ballplayers, or swordsman, etc. Which is why these games are minute, funny experiences in arcades but fairly shallow at home.

I have no doubt the controller can handle basic analog situations with whatever extras they add to it, but what's the point? A system and control built around fishing games, mini games or conducting? I guess that's why the Rev is seen as a casual 2nd system around here.

I'm sure there will be experiences that make it worth playing. And though when I saw it I immediately laughed thinking of how GAF would react, it reacted exactly as a thought....Abject hate and blind devotion. Both seem misplaced.

Sort of dissapointing for a 'revolution'.
