I would just like to chime in with a small comment about all of this puzzling talk from Iwata concerning the "noise" and "power consumption" levels.
As noted in my
HDTV questions thread, my abode, she is tiny. Due to this, noise emissions tends to become more of a problem compared to those who have larger living/gaming areas.
My original PS2 that died sounded something akin to a freight train when it was on, forcing me to turn up the volume much louder than should have been required. On the other hand, my GC ran (and still does run) silently, with only the drive sounds when it's loading. Where I had to have my volume at say 20 to hear over the PS2's fan of doom, I could play comfortably at 7 or so with my GC, and hear perfect audio with all of its nuance. It's barely noticeable. To hear that the Revolution,
like the GC is being designed to be small, unobtrusive and very quiet while running, makes me
very happy.
I imagine, this will make other people who live in small, enclosed areas (read: Japan) also very happy.
That's part of the reason I bought a PStwo (other than the old PS2 being, well, dead). It runs as quietly as my GameCube.
The other thing I'd like to note is that Nintendo also seriously downplayed the "Dolphin"'s power before it was unveiled. This is
not to be hope to the delusional Nintendo fans out there. But I would like to remind people that they were having the
exactly the same idiotic discussions that Nintendo would not "be able" to compete, hardware power-wise before the GameCube was officially unveiled. Whether history repeats again is something I couldn't tell you. Perhaps the Revolution
will lack the power of the PS3 and Xbox360, but
no one knows anything about any of the systems yet.
Because of this, I'm not bothering with "next-gen" until there are actually games out for all of the systems. The gain in power is exciting, yes, but for once I can actually agree with Nintendo on something: it doesn't matter unless there's games for it. (This is NOT to imply there won't be games for PS3 and Xbox360 either, so stop typing your flamebaits, you idiots.) I'm just
not excited about them yet.
I'm sure I will be next E3, when there'll be games for all the
finalized systems (alpha kits do not count) out and ready to play.
