rFactor 2 Beta Thread: Which will crash more often; it or us?

Installing that Lola is another example of how terrible mod installations are in rF2. They somehow made it more of a mess than rF1 and it's turning me off a bit.

I actually think the installation if much superior. I don't even mind the sorting system over the folders. But FFS, they need some shortcuts for track/car selections. If I wanna go from BMW cars to Skip Barber, I shouldn't have to scroll through 100 cars. We've already discussed this topic way back, but there needs to be a sub-category for cars. So they don't list 25 different colors. Select a model and then go to a sub-menu. And it'd also be nice if they hot-keyed things alphabetically. Hitting N would take me to the (N)issans, etc. So I guess it kind of is worse than 1. But it'd be SO easy to fix it. Please fix it.

There is no way it makes sense that when I want to install a car, I have to roam the internet to find the right versions of the right tracks required to install said mod.

The selection is also a mess, since I have to use the all cars/tracks 'mod' which fills up the car selection screen.

It's a terrible, terrible system.

Ugh, agreed. The reason I haven't spent that much time with it is because I really can't be fucked making sure all the mods are in their right folders and have the correct prereqs. I'm astounded they haven't come up with a better system yet.

It's an improvement, just not as much as anyone would like. Rfactor was like the Linux of racers. Rfactor 2 has moved up to Windows, but it's still stuck at Windows 3.1.

Never had that difficult of a time installing stuff to rF2 myself. If you want a more polished and user friendly game I'd suggest waiting for it to go out of beta.

Same situation for me as Arucardo. I've never had a problem installing mods apart from the first time I tried rF2 when everything was new to me. I find adding and deleting mods very easy, the issue is that many mods are tied to track X or another mod. In the case of the Lola, one needs to have installed 3 specific tracks and that is the shite part of rF2 mods right now IMO.

I'm only interested in rF2 because of the ISI made cars and tracks; I can't see myself playing too many mods outside of what are ultra popular in the sim racing community.

Found this on RaceDepartment, a video of a BAC Mono mod for rF2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6kQcmu6m7Bg I hope it's a scratch built car and not taken from another simulation.

Latest pictutres from Tim Wheatley. Apart from the tree (and who cares), rF2 is looking very good indeed!

Yeah, that's looking DAMN good. And knowing that they're focusing more on the handling than the graphics makes me even more excited. I just wish we had a date on the finished game!

A few changes have been made: http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/9623-A-few-changes-including-refund-policy

From Tim Wheatley...

Hi folks,

As you can see, I've made a few changes to the forums, where things are, etc. I think it should be more workable, just take a look around if you cannot find something. I'm also not finished, you'll see forums for each car, etc.

I am also in the process of moving information to the rfactor.net site and off the forum. This means quite soon the forum won't be the 'purchase location' as it has been.

We have also reduced the refund window to 30 days, in-line with the rFactor1 refund window. Obviously we'll work with those who just purchased on the basis they would have two months if the need arises.

Thanks,
Tim.

Regarding the mod installation discussion, I think it's a problem with pretty much any racing games that support mods. We need a steamworkshop sim (or something similar at least).

Stupid question: does anyone know how to remove the driver names above the cars? I've checked what I thought was every option available. And it looks terrible in 3D because there's a massive "pole" that goes from the car, up to the name 500 feet in the air. Every time I play I resolve to figure this out, but I never do.

Press "L" you can change it in the control options ofc.

Thanks. It was "tab" for me to change it. Guess I was expecting it to be labeled something else.

I rearranged some other commands so I probably changed it and accidentally activated it with an unfortunate "tab" press. Because I don't remember having that issue in the beginning. Lot nicer now, obviously :lol.

Chevy Corvette C6.R GT2 Released: http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/10125-Chevy-Corvette-C6-R-GT2-Released

From Tim Wheatley:

"Hi folks,

Download:
http://rfactor.net/web/rf2/rf2dl/#c6r (or at the top of the page, whichever, same links).

This is an individual component, and represents how content should be released from now on. Per car, per track, etc. Old content, currently only available in rfmod packs, will also be released in the same way.

One thing to note with the C6.R is that you shouldn't get TOO comfortable. There is a new build coming that may alter it a tiny bit in (tire model) handling, but we wanted you to have something fun for the weekend anyway.

That new build is very close to release.

Cheers,

Tim.

Now to compare ISI's Corvette GT2 to that of SimBin's in RaceRoom 8)

Gave the Corvette a go. That'll probably be the last time I drive it. I've never in my entire life wished to drive a modern Corvette GT car, so that's probably why I'm so ambivalent to it though.

I like the Corvette in both rF2 and RR-RE although I believe it feels better to drive in rF2 as the FFB in rF2 is a lot better than the vanilla setting in RR-RE.

I had a lot of fun driving the Corvette, looking forward to the new handling.

I also played around with SweetFX a little. Managed to remove a bit of that permanent yellow tint. It still looks very flat and could use some contrast.

I hope ISI licence the rFactor 2 engine(s) to other development teams like they did with rFactor as I'm sure Reiza and SimBin could really create great looking games with the software.

I'm not sure what SimBin are using for RaceRoom; it looks miles better than either rFactor and rFactor 2 yet shares similar control files (e.g. PLR files).

I was bumming around the ISI forums one day and Wheatley was talking about licensing and how tedious negotiations were. He was using an example of a deal he just closed after two years of negotiations. I don't think he was talking about a car deal (although it was in a Porsche talk thread), but it could have been to a private racing team. Either way, I'm sure they have a price. It's certainly a lucrative part of their business.

EDIT: And I still contend that the latest version of Spa (love the stealth updates) in 3D is probably my favorite looking race track ever. It's amazing.

Selling the rF licence to other developers has no doubt greatly benefitted ISI coffers and I think it's something ISI need to do with rF2 as in its currrent state rF2 is a dog's breakfast. Mod installation is archaic and often confusing - for example the Corvette C6R mod is in a different format to all other ISI released vehicles and won't work for me unless I have the HDR option turned on (there are other people having issues in the ISI forums with this mod), the base graphics are well behind those found in other modern sims and the vehcile sounds (engine and tyres) are very often average.

There some bright spots though: both FFB and physics on the ISI built cars are truly sublime and reading about the tyre model blows my mind at the level of detail ISI have included whilst track mods from people such as Feels3 shows there is a good level of graphical quality just waiting to be tapped by talented people or dev teams. Developers such as Reiza and SimBin could extracted every last ounce out of the isiMotor2 with their respective products and I'd love to see what they could do with the isiMotor2.5.

I wonder how many beta licences of rF2 ISI have sold.

Are you referring to Spa-Francorchamps 2011 v0.86? I keep reading about an 'illegal' version of modern Spa in the ISI forums - don't know if this mod is the one that is 'illegal' but it looks good in 2D as well.

Nah. I'm just talking about 60s Spa. That's by far my most played track in the game. And although they don't always publicize it, it's gotten some significant upgrades in the textures along the way. Between buildings and signs, it's pretty lush now (especially compared to the early builds). I'm fairly certain quite a few of these upgrades happened just with base game upgrades and no specific track mod updates.

Monaco has received the same treatment, but with the latest eye candy, it also has some very distracting sections where there is clipping into the void. It makes it very distracting to play for me and has happened on numerous different Nvidia drivers.

But back to Spa, with the road side textures, and the fact it seems you're always racing on 20 foot high embankments, it has this quality that just breathes life to me. It just comes alive in 3D to see the farm valleys down below.

UnitedRacingDesign is doing just that, charging you 10€ for 2 cars.
As I posted elsewhere - good luck to the URD mod team but how are they going to stop people file sharing? As far as I can tell rF2 mods do not contain any form of DRM (at the moment) and URD are subject to piracy like everyone who makes games. Also, what will ISI do about this? I wonder how they feel about a third party making money from their game. Could they send a cease and desist order and scupper the plans of URD? Finally, how does one try before buying? It looks to me like one buys the URD mods in blind faith that the physics etc are of a high standard - a beta example isn't enough for me to drop 10 Euro on a promise the finalised versions will be excellent.

As for the PC mod scene they'll always be free mods of various quality but if enough people buy the cars from United Racing then who knows what may happen long term. Mods like P&G and tracks from feels3 and Virtua_LM may end up being paid for either through donations (a personal preference) or a value set by the modders.

Looks great but the GTR Evo DVD check sucks as many people own only the Steam version. Will be interesting to see if SimBin give this their okay (I hope they do!) and whether Nord's makes it into RaceRoom RE.

Doesn't seem like it. Not even sure why they go through the motions on these things. The thread on ISI's board got locked by request from Simbin. And before that, one of the track modders wasn't answering the Steam question. Then he goes and replies it'll work just like HistorX does with GT Legends (and just need to check once during install). I'm pretty sure HistorX doesn't work with the Steam version. Because the official thread over at HistorX has a thread where Steam owners can PM a work around from the authors. It seemed to me they were just giving them a way to bypass it, not verify it.

But back to the point, even though it only works with the GTR disc, Simbin still doesn't authorize it. So why couldn't they just have gone with the simpler method like with how the P&G 3.0 guys did it? None of these methods really please the copyright holders, so why put up a bunch of barriers.

Personally, I have Race 07, but not GTR E. It was only a couple dollars more, but was of no use to me. I would have, however, purchased on sale for this. But whatever. Guess I won't now. I'm sure somebody else will come out with a version (preferrably the Assetto Corsa guys laser scanning the 24 hour version, although I'm skeptical about that).

Those file checks are ridiculously easy to bypass, as only the first guy extracting the files needs to have the dvd in the tray. After all files are extracted you "rar" them and upload them for your friend and no file check anymore.

As for a company like SimBin, it is understandable both for legal and competition reasons, that you do not want all your content ripped in to a competitors game.

As user, let's hope some talented modders create their own version from scratch, I can wait and play some other tracks in the mean time.

A new mod manager is being worked on:

rFactor2 Build 156 Released

================================================== ===
Update 12 (Build 156) Changelog (Febuary 28, 2013):
================================================== ===
GRAPHICS:
————————
Fixed shaders bug with vertex color adjustments
Fixed headlight bug where headligths would lag one frame behind
Fixed broken tire temp indicator on HUD MFD
Attempt to fix occasional smoke problem with transparent trainer
PHYSICS:
————————
Fixed some issues that happen when upgrades make a change in the number of tire compounds
Added “hard” anti-stall.
Made anti-stall a feature that can be permanently enabled rather than depending on anti-clutch driving aid (HDV: “”AntiStallLogic” =1″, default is 0)
Fixed HDV variable GraphicalOffset so that x&z values don’t affect normal driving physics (y value never did; note they all affect collision, though)
“RearFlapZoneSessions” and “RearFlapWetThreshold” should also be allowed in the RFM (in addition to the GDB); “RearFlapZone” remains the same, GDB-only
Converted TBC parameter “WetWeather” from boolean to floating point value so AIs could judge the level of wetness handled. Exactly zero should still be used for dry weather tires, for the sake of rules.
Added new optional algorithms for engine brake map.
UI / HUD:
————————
Fixed bug on main menu vehicle button if there are no cars installed
In controls menu, highlight controls currently being activated (helps me remember what button is what on my wheel)
Added new playerfile variable “OPT_UI_KeyNav” that toggles keyboard navigation of options.
Removed useless HUD parameters
REPLAYS:
————————
Fixed the situation where replays of races would crash right after track load
MODDING / PUBLIC DEV
————————
Updated ModMgr UI
AI:
————————
Prevent AI cars from fueling if race parameters disallow it.
MULTIPLAYER:
————————
Fixed a bug where 2 clients that have the same custom skin names would sometimes see the other skin on their local car.
