Tequila Works has confirmed to GameSpot that Rime is still in development, and, in fact, we'll be hearing more about it soon. In an email, PR Manager Jose Herraez put to rest our concerns about the game's status, stating, "I can confirm that Rime is still in development, advancing at a great pace."

In addition, he explained that the team working on Rime has actually expanded by 40 percent, suggesting that the developer is expanding its efforts on the game.

As for when we can expect new information about Rime, Herraez told us that we'll hear something around the Gamescom conference coming up in August. "We know it has been a long time with no news, and we are just as eager to communicate about the game as media and fans are to receive news, but we are only a few weeks away of changing that," Herraez explained.

Where they got the money to almost double the team now that Sony isn't footing the bills anymore?

Concerned about it still basically for Sony to drop it. Don't know why the didn't expand their team while with Sony.
We'll see anyway.

Really glad to hear. It sounds like the partnership with GameTrust has allowed them to continue development and expand a little.

I imagine we'll hear that it's coming to XB1 and Steam at GamesCom; since it's no longer a Sony-backed game, I can't imagine it will be an exclusive. It's also built on Unreal Engine 4, meaning it should be easier to port.

Expectations are at an all time low for this.

Since Sony dropped this and the devs merely chuckled at the rumors/accusations that were being brought up rather than actually bother to address them I really don't have any faith in this team. Conceptually the game seemed wonderful in the debut trailer, but of course that was all bunk if certain rumors are to be believed.

Still interested but it's worrying for a large backer like Sony to drop them

Hope they succeed in what they envision but I'll be cautious

Did the rumor that it was supposed to be some top down MOBA like game have any merit?
What about the one that said the trailers we've seen were basically BS and not reflective or anything they actually had in game?

I want this to still exist and be the ICO like experience I dreamed of, but my hopes are not high.

Why did Sony drop them?
Apparently the game was deemed not fun during testing and the whole development process is a mess. (apparently that trailer they showed was pure smoke and mirrors)

We had a thread with some insider talking about how messy the whole thing was.

Yessssssssss!!! Super happy about this! Hoping they also have a release window too. That might be asking for too much but one can hope!

Ouch... Not really surprise by it, but I thought those trailers were amazing.

what's the backstory here?

Why did Sony drop them?

Official word (or Tequila's version) is that Tequila just wanted to achieve their vision without Sony. Other sources say that the development was a complete mess, they submited only cinematics and failed to show Sony a real build of the game. A fellow poster shared what the knew about the development and the status of the game:

All this info comes from a source very close to the studio.

First of all, I was told that the reveal trailer was all cinematic. It was faked to mimic gameplay, assets, etc. from a real game but 0% of the game was implemented.

So the real challenge for the studio was to put that vision into the final game. And apparently this has been impossible to achieve.

This words are a direct quote from my source about this news and the studio itself (it contains his personal opinion):

"Sony required about one month ago the DEV KITs to be returned and canceled the fundings into Tequila Works, due of the game had no-sense. Basically there wasn't a game.

This is a consecuence of the bad studio direction, basically Raul Rubio thinks that he is the next Tim Schafer. The truth is that Raul was fired from MercurySteam. The people from MercurySteam speak really bad about him (the main critics are: he has no idea about games, technology and he has crazy ideas without sense). If you add that his wife is the chairman of Tequila Works and looking for info about her you can find this:

You could see that she is public notary in Spain. She hasn't any background making games. The results are, that Rime has no publisher and it is not cancelled due of they got public spanish founds to develop games:

If you take a look into their website and you compare the hellworkers list with the original team from Deadlight , only a couple guys remains from the original team. If all the team has left the studio, you must think that something wrong there is into the top of the company."

I'm a bit sad to be honest since i was there in the first days of the studio (not working).

Wow.

Wow, surprised that they are expanding their team. In the gaf thread that "debunked" the game someone showed that they had received substantial EU grants that possibly kept them afloat. Is it possible that they have gotten more EU money?

They confirmed in April that the game was still in development for PS4 too (they did not comment on wether they added more platforms). Also, Tequila made a publishing deal with Gamestop, but I don't know how that affects Rime's funding.

I hope this game gets finished, and plays wells.

It's strange to see Sony drop something like this, but maybe Shu knows something we don't?
Or maybe they're dropping the ball again, like they did with Demon's Souls and From Software.

I'm excited for it, regardless.

I lost all hope for this. People need to basically treat the next showing as a brand new reveal since the last trailers weren't showing an actual game.

Gonna need to see some actual player impressions. They've tainted the well on this by passing off a lengthy pre-redered video as a slice of actual gameplay.

According to sources posted when Sony pulled the plug there was, essentially, nothing playable about what they had, not even a full vertical slice. If they don't have something playable at Gamescom I can't imagine why anyone would stick with them.
