Rise of the Tomb Raider OT | Feat. 20% more tombs and 75% more chastising OP's title

JohnnyFootball

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Finished my first playthrough last night, I'm at 99% completion. Seems I am missing 2 survival caches in the geothermal valley, 1 document and 2 caches in Soviet installation.

These appear nowhere on the map to be found, I backtracked last night as well as I could but there's no way I'm finding these without markers on the map, which I do not have for these collectibles. Is it a bug, what am I missing? It's heartbreaking going through all the collectibles and not having 100% completion just for a couple of caches.

Advice?
I am stuck at 99% because CD won't fix the fucking Misguided Intelligence glitch. That damn bird won't show up anywhere.

Finally beat it. 100% everything except achievements and whatnot.

Great game. I never had the input lag problem so it was a joy for me to play. I didn't play a lot last year but this would be my GOTY for sure.

I was thinking of picking this up, but decided to play the first one since I hadn't yet. I hated it for about the first hour until you finally start encountering enemies and was having a lot of fun with it, mostly enjoying shooting enemies with arrows. As it goes on though, I've become very frustrated with it in general. The story is awful and is going by at breakneck speed with no real emotion and terrible characters. The entire torture porn aspect is a major turn off and seems very out of place and completely unnecessary. You can't go 20 minutes without her falling through a floor or having the shit beat out of her by the environment. The combat was fun until it starts just putting you in these situations where it's throwing 20 enemies at you. The whole game to me just feels like they decided "Let's make Uncharted but it's going to be HARDCORE!!!!"

I want to play Rise of the Tomb Raider, but having stopped half way through TR, does the sequel fix enough of the previous games problems? I know that there's more focus on actual tombs and the world seems a little more open with different ways to attack situations, but does it shed its bullshit from the previous game?

OK, I'm a good couple of hours in
I'm in the cave section that happens after you meet Jacob
and I'm really struggling with it. I loved the first, but the combat scenario's combined with the input lag feel TERRIBLE. Should I carry on with it? Does it get better?

The input lag doesn't get better but the skills you get help compensate for it - particularly the
bow upgrade which gives you auto headshot as long as you zoom in and lets you tag multiple people for simultaneous headshots
and the
gas arrows which are AOE

also, go stealth whenever you can!

Thanks for the response!

Do you think it is worth continuing? How much longer is left?

A lot :p you're probably 1/4-1/3 of the way through!

I loved it though so I would say stick with it. If you really, really can't put up with it anymore, I would just stop playing it and hope they either patch it or buy it on a different platform.

Just to double check, if you're playing on a TV, is it on Game mode? It won't completely remove the input lag but it'll help a lot.

Wow, I thought I was further than that!

I may play a bit more and see. And I'm playing on a monitor through hdmi so it shouldn't be a problem should it? I usually don't notice but it feels off.

Yeah monitors generally don't have the same display lag so I don't think there's anything you can do to make it better :/

I can almost guarantee you the Geothermal Valley ones are near the Catacomb of the Sacred Waters. The Explorer Satchel where the locations would be given away is hidden.

Basically, go to that camp, head back to the room where you use the rope arrows to tie down the thing. As you enter, head to the water on the right hand side. You'll be able to swim eventually in one corner. Take that water route to the path. You'll see the satchel, which will give you the locations of the survival caches (one of which is in that very room) and be able to find the other cache in that are.

I know this is likely the one because I missed those two myself when I was trying to clear everything.

I don't know about the document in Soviet Installation. I can't think of what that would be.

Thanks, will try this tonight.

Downloaded the Baba Yaga DLC earlier. Only played maybe an hour. Seems pretty good so far. Really liked the first major puzzle. Will probably play through the rest tomorrow.

I'm finally right at the end and although there are some cool sections I do not like that the game
just throws ambush waves at you. It's easily the worst aspect of the game and you're forced to fight wave after wave. It's not even that hard just annoying with the combat controls.

Just finished it, and it was a pretty good run. That finale is fun, and a lot better than the main game's. It's pretty damn short, though, which was telegraphed but still. Hopefully they'll do more story-based DLC like this in the future. It was definitely under a budget, as we don't get cutscenes as good as the main game.

Now I'm just looking forward to that final piece of DLC.

What's so hard about the combat controls?

I don't know why they though Chloe from Life is Strange would sound like a native...seemed like stunt casting. DLC was fun, and pretty puzzle oriented, even with the combat. Difficulty was weird, though. It seemed like you could take a lot of punishment but you were unable to heal during certain parts.

I finished Baba Yaga. When I stopped last night I figured I was half way through, but I was pretty much right at the end. Wish there was a little more content here. It is over in under two hours and some of that is spent in old areas, so it feels a little lacking. The one major puzzle and the final confrontation were both really good, but beyond that I wasn't too impressed. Pretty good still I guess, but I was hoping for more.

I guess hard is the wrong word - to me, the combat doesn't control well when the game sends waves of enemies at you. It is much better suited for stealthy takedowns, etc.

I feel you. Playing stealthy is the way to go, I feel. Though, I do enjoy the combat in these games...

Baba Yaga DLC probably has one of the best puzzles in the game (if not the best) and a really good boss fight but the backtracking to collect stuff is a shame. Another crypt cave and challenge tomb or even another puzzle would have been appreciated too. Overall it is worth playing through for the puzzle and boss and the new areas do look nice. $9.99 might be a bit high though. If only there were more puzzles like that in the main game or optional tombs. CD is capable of really good puzzle design when they want to but maybe about half of the challenge tombs were really good.

Just finished mopping up the DLC achievements for Baba Yaga.

They really did nail that final boss. It's a frantic run and the "puzzle" element adds to it. Better than the main game's
helicopter
finale.

Ive had a ton of issues with the DLC. Environment graphic issues (all trees going 2D, Snow covering all available routes forcing me to travel below world maps.) Now Im at what I assume is the last boss fight or close and it is not triggering. I was in a room with the two fire blast things and couldn't figure out what to do. I watched a youtube walkthrough and they had a cutscene when they entered the room with Lara dropping the antidote and it breaks open with a boss coming out. This does not happen for me. I reloaded the game to try again and still no progress.

Man my xbone just locked up while fighting baba yaga, first time that's ever happened, and it dumped me back to the campfire before it.

I'm one survival cache away from 100% game completion. And it's somewhere in the Geothermal Valley. Which I have explored top to bottom a number of times already. And none of the maps I've found marked it on my map.

Lara pls...

Go inside the challenge tombs - you won't see things on the overworld map that are in them sometimes.

Agreed, not worth the money. Extremely short, backtracking and you get the new outfit and bow after you finish the damn thing.... Yeah, I can't recommend it.

I had a feeling it would be like this. $30 definitely too much for season pass. Glad I held out.

Im about ready to break the disc in two. DLC is completely broke.
Im at the part where you hit the switch to bring the witches house so you can ride it to the next point. My marker is on the switch. Ive hit the switch at least 15 times riding the house to the last campsite and it has never registered. If I progress into the cave I get no triggers and am stuck in the room. I have achievements for falling off the house and bringing the house to me...Ive fast traveled back to previous campsites over and over with the hope the switch registers when its hit but no luck.

So frustrating.

There is supposed to be a cutscene at that camp, did it happened for you?

No cut scene at the camp, no cutscenes after coming out of the water in the cave. I only know of the cave cutscenes because of YouTube walkthroughs trying to figure out what I couldn't progress.

Any impressions of Endurance mode? I've been reading about it and it sounds amazing- randomly generated world, perma death, you need to hunt to eat, you can freeze to death...

I'm enjoying it a ton. Survival modes like that right up my ally, so this was my most anticipated DLC for the game when they announced all three packs. You can also use cards to either increase the difficulty or handicap it in your favor. I just really enjoy the tense nature of the mode and the situations that come from those tense situations. Knowing when you should call it quits or gambling to see if you can survive one more day is really enjoyable in my opinion. It also has extreme conditions where snow storms intensify and the temperature drops considerably, with visibility becoming a huge liability. It just has these small touches that add to the overall experience by creating these enjoyable moments throughout each play session. It plays pretty much exactly how it is described, so if it sounds amazing to you, then you'll probably really enjoy it. For right now, Endurance mode is the reason this game has stayed in my gaming rotation.

In general the mode reminds me a lot of the Infinity Mode in the first Dead Rising where you used the limited resources of the mall to keep Frank alive for as long as you could. Which was something I couldn't stop playing either at the time.

Just beat the game on PC. Definitely much better than the first in presentation, utilizing verticality in levels and big open tombs to explore and solve.

The enemy encounters swing drastically between "barely need to move and brainlessly pick off enemies" to "frustratingly swarmed and shot at from all sides in a tiny space". There's seldom any balance between the two extremes. I found that there wasn't much in the way of dynamic stealth; once they see you, they all see you and it's difficult to get back into stealth. Killing was the quickest and easiest way through. The enemy encounters towards the end were mind numbing and tedious, moreso than the previous entry.

The biggest pro is the tomb designs. Many of the optional tombs seem full featured and as sprawling/impressive as the "story" tombs. This is also one of the prettiest games I've seen. It's incredibly impressive looking, thick with atmosphere, utilizing ambient occlusion and tessellation to great effect. Lara's "super hair" still looks like a fake, raggedy wig on a realistic face, but overall the dynamic flowy hair is much preferable to the stilted ponytail.

The most grueling part of the game for me was easily the bloat of objects and materials strewn about the level, littering my map with icons. I feel compelled to do that stuff "because it's there", but I'm really not having fun while I'm doing them. After a while I just ignored all of it and made a straight line towards the story marker. I know a lot of people like the open level design, but like the previous entry, I thought the return I got for revisiting previous areas and exploring 100% of a area was almost never satisfying. After 100%-ing an area all I could think was "well, that was mostly a bunch of mediocre stuff behind those previously locked areas". In their next TR game, maybe I'll just go for the optional tombs leave it at that.

Still, this is a strong entry in the rollicking action-adventure TPS exploration category. I liked the story (even if the progression is more or less identical to the last game), and I liked the character treatments much better this time around. I wish the game didn't take itself ultra seriously all the time (seriously, I don't remember a single joke or moment of levity in this game), took it a little easy on the collectibles, and didn't make the last act a series of wave based combat in tiny arenas. But the leap in visuals, exploration, tombs, and traversal mechanics pushed me through the game really quickly. Definitely one of those games that I wish could just keep going.

That's me finished.

I thought the voice actress this time around was better and they toned down the punishment and pain reactions. Still got a good laugh out of her attempt at "demonic possession" delivery in one of the later tombs.

The side characters were far better than last time and it probably helped you didn't see them much and there waa only a few. Story was fine, didn't see the point in the dad issues. Trinity, surely
there is nothing left for them unless there is another world domination thing to find which would be a bit lame
. Had no complaints on the Lara character design, stick with it this time, great work.

Overall, the game was similar to the last one but still very good fun. Set pieces weren't all that but the last level had a nice layout for doing all your tricks.

At least the stuff you collect means something towards your skills and items but still a bit of a chore rather than being fun to get with a reward. Side missions were nice to have and different routes into some areas you've already beat. Would like something a bit more. Tombs were nice and big this time with a bit more to do although the traversal seemed stretched out for the sake of making it long and loading, very nice looking areas.

Holy hell, grenade spam. Encounters are fun sneaking around but once they see you, not sure I'm that fond of the design, would like to be able to disappear again and do more like Splinter Cell. I think there is still more room for improvement with encounters and the environment being put to better use and more free for Lara to traverse. Make another one Crystal Dynamics.
