Just beat the game on PC. Definitely much better than the first in presentation, utilizing verticality in levels and big open tombs to explore and solve.
The enemy encounters swing drastically between "barely need to move and brainlessly pick off enemies" to "frustratingly swarmed and shot at from all sides in a tiny space". There's seldom any balance between the two extremes. I found that there wasn't much in the way of dynamic stealth; once they see you, they all see you and it's difficult to get back into stealth. Killing was the quickest and easiest way through. The enemy encounters towards the end were mind numbing and tedious, moreso than the previous entry.
The biggest pro is the tomb designs. Many of the optional tombs seem full featured and as sprawling/impressive as the "story" tombs. This is also one of the prettiest games I've seen. It's incredibly impressive looking, thick with atmosphere, utilizing ambient occlusion and tessellation to great effect. Lara's "super hair" still looks like a fake, raggedy wig on a realistic face, but overall the dynamic flowy hair is much preferable to the stilted ponytail.
The most grueling part of the game for me was easily the bloat of objects and materials strewn about the level, littering my map with icons. I feel compelled to do that stuff "because it's there", but I'm really not having fun while I'm doing them. After a while I just ignored all of it and made a straight line towards the story marker. I know a lot of people like the open level design, but like the previous entry, I thought the return I got for revisiting previous areas and exploring 100% of a area was almost never satisfying. After 100%-ing an area all I could think was "well, that was mostly a bunch of mediocre stuff behind those previously locked areas". In their next TR game, maybe I'll just go for the optional tombs leave it at that.
Still, this is a strong entry in the rollicking action-adventure TPS exploration category. I liked the story (even if the progression is more or less identical to the last game), and I liked the character treatments much better this time around. I wish the game didn't take itself ultra seriously all the time (seriously, I don't remember a single joke or moment of levity in this game), took it a little easy on the collectibles, and didn't make the last act a series of wave based combat in tiny arenas. But the leap in visuals, exploration, tombs, and traversal mechanics pushed me through the game really quickly. Definitely one of those games that I wish could just keep going.
