The only other game so far this year to captivate me this completly is ArmA 2. I still haven't played Batman: Arkham Asylum or Uncharted 2, two of the supposedly best games this year.
Metacritic score for PC Risen so far: 81%.....smh
I guess this game is a nightmare for reviewers on a deadline:
Its hard, you die often. Have to pay attention during combat.
It starts slow.
Exploring - the heart of the game - takes a lot of time.
No hand holding - Euro RPG.

Just joined the Order as a Mage. That section felt really polished. The opening hour is kinda misleading, feels very 'budget title' as opposed to the rest of the game.
I think I regret my choice as a mage. Been focusing too much on melee, and now I have like 50 mana and two shitty rune spells. Been playing for around 11 hours. Should I bother to restart, or just stick with it?
The smith at Don's camp also teaches lockpicking.somesang said:Need some help from someone that's played it for a bit.
Where can I learn to pick locks?
I think Phil from the Don's camp did, but I "accidentally" got him killed. I'm at Harbor Town/City now. I might want to reload an earlier save, but that was hours ago. Should I reload or is there someone else somewhere?
Cat in the Hat said:Ok I've Don all the Don's quests in Harbor city so I was given the key to leave town through the tunnels and go meet the Don. BUT WHERE THE HELL IS THIS GUYS HOUSE AT? I've looks everywhere and I don't see anything in the quest info saying where he is. Help please!

You keep saying "lightning strucks" but I don't see any lightning, or any lightning striking. Do you mean lighting? The rays look nice.NIN90 said:Love the effect when lightning strucks.

Oh, so you did mean "when lightning strikes". Sorry...that picture looked like daylight to me, so I did not realize that it was just the flash from lightning. Sunrays seem odd for lightning, but I guess it looks neat when it happens suddenly.NIN90 said:Oh, well maybe it's because English isn't my first language.
Maybe this will do the trick:
Yeah, the lightning effect is really amazing but basically impossible to capture in screenshots. Perhaps I'll try (in best GAF tradition) to make an animated gif the next time I see a storm.Blizzard said:Oh, so you did mean "when lightning strikes". Nah, that's what you get for PC gaming.Mejilan said:Fuck it.
Amazon's got this for $39.99, BEFORE my ECA discount.
Seems like they're a bit backordered now, so it won't ship for at least another week.
But I ordered this, and preordered Fallout 3 GotY (PC) + Dragon Age Origins CE (PC), for like $115 shipped.
Edit - Actually, that seems kind of low for all three, doesn't it?
*shrugs*

I played the demo and was pleasantly surprised. The graphics are nice, the VO above average, and the design intricate. I had to take the shadows down to low, but the game still looks acceptable (that's a common setting I have to take down on most titles, so I'm not surprised what with my aging rig and all.)
The combat's alright. I don't like how the game forces enemies to have an obvious AI. Really, is a vulture going to dodge my three attacks so deftly? It's not that an animal wouldn't have self-defense or that I went charging blindly into battle with no regard for blocking (I didn't), it's that you can see the mechanics working - blindingly so - and the immersion is gone. It gets REALLY arcadey and unrealistic, and my short recollection of Gothic 3 comes rushing back. I didn't like the very short time I spent with that game.
However, the presentation is much nicer than I thought it would be. I can't justify spending fifty bucks on Risen; there's just not enough there to convince me, but a weekend special or price drop down the road could do it.

yeah, pickpocket works fine. you might need level 2 for brogar. you can learn thief skills from uh who was it again, phil?dollartaco said:It's very fun. Question about the Don/swamp initial questline.
So, you have to find a way to get the Don's wife to give you clearance to see him. But in order to do so, it seems like the only way is to fight the leader of the fighters (forget his name). Are there ways of getting into the Don that don't involve an arena fight? Even if I just want to do the golden blade quest, I still need his sword fragment. Didn't have pickpocket at the time--does that work? The reason I ask is because he was fucking impossible to defeat.
Yeah Phil teaches that, or you can fight Bro in the arena and take his sword shard.Joseph Merrick said:yeah, pickpocket works fine. you might need level 2 for brogar. you can learn thief skills from uh who was it again, phil?

I doubt there is one, at least in practice. If you do everything you'll be around 27 or 28 by the end of the game, if I remember correctly.Zeliard said:Anyone know what the level cap is?
