GhostWriter (who I'm going to assume is Cole because it's fun to believe) when are we getting those official Jughead hats for sale? WB merch should be frothing at the mouth to get those bad boys out there haha.

Def not Cole haha, but yeah I agree about the hats. I'm sure they have plans to make them, if they haven't already started. Think I read something about Hot Topic reaching out to Riverdale a short while ago with merch ideas, too.

Damn those unmarked spoilers at the top of the page.

I come in here to see the reactions before watching, before someone calls me out.

The reactions aren't going to be marked spoilers, it's fair game when it airs. Why are you even complaining, you did it to yourself.

Catching up now. I knew shit must have went down cause "Ms Grundy" was the #2 trending topic on Twitter last night.

- B&V Investigation Squad is back at it again. Committing felonies on a weekly basis now.
- Betty stole the gun?! Why would you do that?! This Alice Cooper freakout is pretty legitimate under the circumstances.
- Kevin trying to eat his feelings. Been there before haha
- Skeet Ulrich!
- So Kevin is a snake charmer...oh dear...
- Aww poor "Ms Grundy." Although, this is getting off easy *wink*. Their relationship is wrong. Even if Archie started it, she's the adult. Alice Cooper might've had an ulterior motive but she's not wrong. Grundy was thirsty as fuck at the end there.
- Man, I didn't know Jughead's home life was this messed up.

It's common for there to be clear marked spoiler threads on gaf alongside spoilered ones. Not really my fault for expecting the same standard to follow for the Riverdale thread. Fair play if it was a week, but it's only just aired.

What? That's not the case for network shows. Gaming side, Netflix or movies sure. But for broadcast TV shows the rule is very clear, once it's airing the tags are off. I'm aware it's Netflix outside of the US, but it's live where it counts.

Hey has anyone else noticed that Archie is hot af? I thought I would point that out in case anyone hadn't noticed what I keep noticing each and every episode.

Just started watching and loving the hotness. Archie is a total stud, Betty is all girl next door and Veronica has the classic trust fund brunette appeal.

This episode has me thinking that maybe Alice Cooper isn't so bad after all. I mean, ya, she's a bitch, but she really cares about her daughter and she's 100% right about Ms. Grundy.

You've been watching too many Netflix shows.

I'm kind of loving Kevin.

Same. I like that they haven't been playing up his gayness for the sake of drama. For example, his dad gave him some sound advice.

Speaking of the Sheriff. I don't think Jason's killer smashed his murder board. That's too perfect. I think it was someone who just didn't like him sniffing around.

Seriously. Alice is kinda nutty but your daughter hiding a gun and writing about her friend's secret bang sessions with a teacher is going to send any parent into Defcon 1. I want to know why she hates Archie so much. Is she projecting the Polly & Jason thing onto him and Betty, maybe?

Their dialogue at the end seems to imply she's projecting. "I am Elizabeth, I am not Polly. Archie is not Jason. So stop using them as an excuse to control my life!". At this point Alice is probably prejudiced against redheads, lol.

Alice is mentally ill, extremely overprotective and detrimental to Betty. As far as the show crafted, she's a villain. But as a person, I don't think she's evil. Just a terrible mother and insufferable person, doing what she thinks is right.

Now Betty's bland father...

That sounds right. Funny hearing Betty be adamant about not being confused for Polly, she didn't seem too sure about it last week lol

Redheads on this show are not to be trusted. My theory is still that Archie, Jason, Cheryl, and Ethel have formed a RedHead cabal that is trying to take over Riverdale, with Archie's mom sitting at the very top. Wasn't the murder board made using RED string? #ItsAllConnected #JusticeForRedheaddale

That has never been the rule for weekly network shows (or shows that air weekly period) and this is a network show, not a Netflix show despite being on Netflix outside the U.S. That rule is in place because people watch Netflix produced shows at their own pace and some will binge said show over the course of a single day while others will take their time if they choose to which is why that restriction is in place. That rule wouldn't be in place in those OTs either if Netflix released one episode at a time instead of dumping it all at once.

The girls are all so wonderful in their own way easily the best part of the show.

Betty and Cheryl cracked me up so much.

Fun episode. A lot lighter on the dramatic reveals but still good, and the show should probably lean back on that for a while since they can't have every episode be some big shock since it's twelve or thirteen episodes this season.

Hopefully Archie becomes more enjoyable now with Grundy gone.

I can't buy the Betty is Polly theory. Wasn't Polly like a known person if she dated Jason enough to make Cheryl hate her guts? Why would she, or everyone (including Archie) pretend to just go along with Betty suddenly developing a split personality?

I concur on all counts here. The Betty / Polly mystery, whatever it is, is really well done though - there are just enough little things that feel off about Betty and her interactions with her mother ("What's my name?") that it's clear there's something lurking further down the road, without it being easy to clock exactly what that might be. That applies to a lot of the storylines, come to think of it.

I appreciate this episode more in retrospect than I did while watching it initially.

Betty was dumb for taking the gun with her, but considering her darker side, who knows what she might have been planning to do with it. Kill her mom, perhaps?

Jennifer Gibson/Geraldine Grundy thing was nuts. I didn't buy the schtick about her being in an abusive relationship and changing her name for one second. At the end, you still see her checking out young guys with the same glasses and everything.

The B-plot with the theater was more engaging. Hermione and the Mayor conspiring to buy the drive-in lot and the Southside Serpents being paid to lower the property value. I'm more interested in what is going on with the adults, because they have a TON of skeletons in their closets.

I feel bad for Jughead. Man, losing the one place you treasured the most as a kid that was also your make-shift home. And the fact that his dad (wtf) is one of the Serpents and was nonchalantly involved in making his son homeless is abhorrent.
Where's Hot Dog though? Don't tell me he's dead. :(

I think she rationalized it with a less insidious reason: she thought Grundy had something to do with Jason's death and was worried that she might kill Archie with the gun.

I like the idea mentioned earlier in the thread that Betty purposefully left the gun there, knowing it would set her Mum off on one to shake the whole thing loose and sort out her Archie/Grundy problem. Even if it's never mentioned again in the show, I like that there's just that small seed of doubt as to her intentions.

That makes sense, but why keep it in her room of all places?

And does she not have a lock for her diary?

That's too contrived to make any sense. It relies on assumptions and there are variables that could make that plan backfire.

Oh, totally. I don't think it would actually work as a plot point that gets dragged into the limelight - I just like it as a tiny potential doubt left hanging in viewers' minds. Nah, she wouldn't. That's crazy manipulative. She's not that psychotic... Right?

So the show has settled on a 0.4 this week which is down from last week. This really sucks. Oh well, I have yet to watch this week's episode, will get around to it tomorrow.

Kevin is just about important enough a character for people to not consider him as the murderer, while actually being the murderer. There also is the whole "you look different without a beard" the snake guy said to him before they made out. They didn't seem to know each other prior, meaning he must have seen Kevin while passing by. But Kevin never seemingly wore a beard, meaning he might have been hiding his identity with a fake one. But why?

Any theories for
who broke into Sheriff Keller's home?
Daddy Cooper
, who was absent for both plots during that time.

Jughead's next potential home?

If he'd get over himself,
living with Archie.

I was watching the show and was freaking out because I was like "IS THAT SKEET ULRICH?"

I feel like the hidden history of Riverdale's parents is almost as juicy as what's happening with their kids.

The "beard" is a reference to Veronica. For many, a beard is a person that allows them to pass as something else in public. In this case, allowing Kevin to appear straight.

lol in case you're being serious, "beard" was a joke referring to Veronica.

Beard is a slang term describing a person who is used, knowingly or unknowingly, as a date, romantic partner (boyfriend or girlfriend), or spouse either to conceal infidelity or to conceal one's sexual orientation.

Even though Kevin is openly gay Joaquin joked about it because Veronica was his date that night.

edit: beaten by MHWilliams' sneak edit.

I hope this running gag of Cheryl constantly bringing up Jason whenever someone does anything continues. Betty is drinking coffee and Cheryl shouts about how Jason drank coffee, Archie ties his shoelaces and Cheryl screams of how Jason used to do it.

Yeah, it was pretty dumb. I can give her some leeway in that her mother found it the morning after they broke into Grundy's car, so it could mean she was in the process of finding a more secure place to hide it after school. I can't totally rule out the theory that it was intentional though.

Speaking of her diary, I found it interesting that she was starting a different one at the end of the episode. I don't know if it's supposed to mean anything, but the pink one still had quite a few pages to go.

Doesn't look like this one has a lock either, lol.

Haha, agreed. Cheryl is being a surprisingly effective comic relief in the show.

I am German and wasn't aware that term is a thing. But I like to learn! "Beard" aside, I still think he is reasonably suspect. Not basing this on his character, but the thought of who people would least consider. I am excluding Archie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica as they are the main characters of the show. Meanwhile, they have established Kevin as a member of that group, when he is not part of the main actors.

enigmatic_alex44

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
I'm enjoying this but it has such a weird tone. Way different from the Archie's Digest I remember obviously but it's like the show doesn't know what it wants to be. Serious but sarcastic at the same time and swings between dark/moody and goofy too frequently. Plus how are we supposed to take Jughead's beanie seriously? Also Betty's mom is garbage.

That's what I was thinking because that was such a dumb place to stash it and then leaving her diary where it was so easily accessible despite knowing her mother. I like the idea of "manipulator", maybe a little psychotic Betty.
