7.0 Presentation
Such a strange and unusual approach to the Japanese RPG genre, but even with its limitations it still works.
7.5 Graphics
Really well-rendered hand-drawn artwork, but many of the locations recycle the same backgrounds, ruining the discovery element.
8.0 Sound
The game's musical score is surprisingly lush and orchestral, and fits the theme very well.
7.0 Gameplay
It's a cross between a turn-based RPG and a point-and-click adventure. It may not be what you're hoping for, but it has its moments...as well as an enjoyable storyline.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
It will last as long as a standard RPG adventure. No multiplayer to speak of, but there's enough left behind the first time through to encourage a second play.
7.0 OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Riviera isn't going to set the RPG world aflame with its unusual, more rigid and straightforward design, but it is a nice change of pace from the usual RPG designs coming out of Japan. The plot takes a bit to get going but it eventually does move along, even if it's a story that you've probably experienced in some fashion in nearly every other Japanese RPG game in the past two decades.

So Multi in RPG is required now?

7.0 Lasting Appeal
This game does not have any fast cars, football teams, or beach volleyball, but there's enough left behind the first time through to encourage a second play.
