Does anyone else see FordFest as kinda buying votes? Using his money to give out free shit to sway people...

Sounds like exactly the kind of crooked shit city politicians do to buy votes when their popularity is more important to them than good governance.

Using a strategy reminiscent of old-style Mexican politics, the besieged incumbents began offering their constituents "freebies," including one-month's free trash service, a plan for free medical care out of a new health clinic, and raffles which awarded a new television set to one newly registered voter and a free, new house, offered by the city, to one lucky non-homeowner.

In the end, voter turnout for the special recall election was higher than for other city elections. Secretary of State Kevin Shelley sent in monitors to insure a fair election. And, unlike last year's gubernatorial election, which appeared to suppress turnout, the heavy-handed tactics of South Gate recall targets seemed to fire up a significant number of first-time voters.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Even away for a month, he's still high in the polls. It's amazing.

Heck, the next election will be like the last one and it'll come down to 905 vs 416/647 once again.
Wait, what? People are actually going to vote for this guy? Is he, like, productive in office or something?

you mean north of 401 vs south of 401/urban toronto proper vs toronto proper?

His promises and work hugely appeals to the suburban voters: promising a subway to scarbrough (even though it cost more and serves less people) has gained traction, and the entire debate on war on transit has worked well for those voters (I've known way too many people who've vowed to vote him exclusively because of him cutting the vechicle tax, even though that nuked out all the revenue that the city was generating.

So yes, productive, depending on who you ask.

Fuck me, he is actually still going for election again and is polling ahead of competition? This city sucks, more urban people definitely need to vote.

I feel bad for the guy every time I see him. It was funny at first, now it's just sad. I really don't understand why he keeps wanting to be a mayor.

And 7 weeks really isn't enough to kick a habit like this. Here's hoping he's going to make an effort to stay clean, but getting in a high-pressure election race so soon after rehab? Bad idea.

He and Doug literally handed out twenty dollar bills at some apartment building last year. Nobody gives a shit. It's fucking astounding.

I got a free burger, but he's not getting my vote.

(Also, Toronto Life magazine zeroed-in on me waiting in line for that burger and tried to interview me. It's like they could tell I was a fish out of water.)

Young people? What? And Scarborough... please stop this ;__;

Young people, many who don't really understand politics all that well, idolize him for being the "party mayor".

Then there's Scarborough, which feels "snubbed" by downtown.

Would he really be any worse than Harper? At least he would be funny.
Well right now people root for him also for the fact that he can act out his "I'm fighting against the man, I'm just like you" to both the provincial and federal parties. If he's at the top, I'm not exactly sure who he'd tried to blame for lack of money.

Provincial/Federal politics are waaaaay different than Municipal.

The big Provincial/Federal parties thoroughly vet their candidates (except for the NDP in the last federal election), weeding out people like the Fords, but in Municipal elections any schmoe can run.

past mayors and mayoral candidates ignored the outskirts and ignored the working class living in bad neighborhoods.

past mayors and mayoral candidates only gave their attention to the Down-Town core and intellectuals.

what Rob Ford did was a stroke of genius for a guy who smokes crack.
Rob Ford campaigned in the places were the others ignored, he campaigned in working class boroughs, campaigned in the outskirts that have shitty public transit service, he campaigned in low income areas and reached out to visible minorities.

so when a Conservative does more to reach out to the working class and visible minorities, then you cannot ask yourself why he keeps on winning. He played it smooth, smart and knew how to win.

I am not Conservative, I am a Liberal and I hope Rob Ford wins to teach a lesson to the Lefty-Left who only pander to the bike riding hippies and insider intellectuals.

Everyone I know around my age (18-20 crowd) hates the guy and pretty much never wanted him in. We also all live in Scarborough, where I don't understand how anyone can feel "snubbed" by downtown. Downtown is great, Scarbruh isn't. (Okay, it's pretty cool at certain parts.) ;)

Rob Ford is the man of the people.

Snow supporting Rob Ford was hilarious since it was the first I've seen him since the early 2000s.

yeah, it's hilarious. The irony of course is that there was actually a 'Lefty-Left' candidate in the 2010 election, Giambrone, who clearly had more experience with working class and transit issues. Giambrone dropped out of the race, as demanded by Ford it's worth noting, because it was revealed he cheated on his girlfriend. Ford likely won't have won that election if Giambrone hadn't resigned. Now four years later Ford refuses to follow his own advice, resign and drop out of the mayor race after an even bigger scandal. *shrug* politics eh?

edit
double irony, all I know about Toronto politics is from watching comedians

campaigned in the outskirts that have shitty public transit service,
Anyone who actually uses the transit in the "outskirts in the city" is still not getting served by what he's campaigning though. His major "breakthrough" is the Scarbrough Subway, which replaces the previously funded Streetcar/LRT line that provides the same coverage but cost more (yes, I do understand that the potential usage of subway is higher if the ridership is there, but then again, how's that Shepherd line doing? :p). On the other hand, if you take Finch line and get to the bus terminal like I do, you'll see that the rush hour bus platform is still overcrowded, people shoving each other as we wait for the bus, which hasn't seen any improvement at all in volume or quality.

His campaign of "subways subways subways" is more of an appeal to people who never take the full set of public transit. Subways are great, but it is not the be all end all of Toronto's problems, and his blind commitment to it is a disservice to anyone who ACTUALLY uses the public transit.

Let's assume that he gets mayorship for another 4 years, and at the end of that term, I can tell you that my usage of the TTC as a service and coverage will not change. Ironically, at best it may be enhanced by the York extension, which is being paid for by York Region more than anything.

The Scarborough Subway is the biggest waste of "taxpayer money", as he calls it, you could imagine.

As someone who depended on transit for years, the whole mess with him interfering with transit makes me actually quite angry.

Lots of people voted for Ford, and will vote for him again, to "teach the left a lesson".

It's really, really, really stupid.
