Rob Liefeld Tries to Draw G.I. Joe Characters

Rob Liefeld got a comics gig after being blacklisted by both Marvel and DC, "drawing" a Snake Eyes mini-series for IDW.

And, well, it's Liefeld:

Look at Roadblock. It's the same fucked up Captain America from twenty years ago:

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
He has some male chest fetish lol

At least he's consistent? Seeing that Roadblock made me laugh before I even scrolled to see the infamous Cap art. I can't fucking believe he didn't correct that pose on future art.

But which is worse, Liefield's Captain America, or Bisley's superman?

Obviosly Liefield since Bisley has demonstrated that he can alter his art style if he wants

I was actually going to comment that Liefeld's classic " weapon clipping" issues were still on display. Also the character appears to be arbitrarily shooting off to the side while looking in a totally different direction. =P

Still think Liefeld peaked as an artist in the early 90s and all his attempts to improve just made his stuff look weirder while still retaining all the core issues.

Are there any examples of "good" work from him? I see soooo much bad stuff posted about him, I'd like to see if there is any good, cause based off everything I've seen he seems like someone who somehow fell upwards in a career he's not very good at...

The thing about Liefield is that his art mostly works on a casual level, almost like a caricature, that conveys the meaning of whats meant to be going on in a scene, even if all the details are just completely wrong.

If you're reading to enjoy the art, then he's just abysmal, but if you're really only taking in the art as a means to help visualise the story, and aren't taking the time to register those flaws, then the over the top and messy style actually does quite a good job of conveying meaning with it's images.

It's comic book art for people that glance at it while getting to the next narration box or speech bubble, and looking at it rhat way, I kind of get why he's actually had such a long and successful career, and even been pretty influential, while even better artists on a technical level have faded into obscurity.

It's still objectively fucking terrible though.

As much as Liefeld gets shit on by comic book fans over his art, it should be said that when the Image guys became millionaires, Liefeld was paying artists on his book $40,000. That’s for one 22 page floppy. That generosity trumps any critique I could ever possibly have on the cartoonist.

Lefield also has a consistently long line at every convention. Why? Because he will draw a sketch of any character you want for free.

I once paid about $70 for David Finch to draw a portrait of Wolverine for me at a Comic Con. Lefield made millions off of his shitty artwork and still managed not to become a douchebag (as far as I know).

Rob Liefeld continues to be delusional:

Deadpool is popular today because of what Joe Kelly did to the character in 1997.

When Rob Liefeld ripped off Deathstroke in 1991 the character was nothing like the one that's popular today, yet he keeps taking credit for it like how Bob Kane took sole credit for creating Batman for decades.

The guy got blacklisted from both Marvel and DC. With DC he did A LOT but the thing that really got him kicked out was him publicly revealing NDA'd deals like crossovers they were in negotiation to do. Then he threatened to sue Marvel for some unknown reason.

He also likes to draw while driving:

And yes, Liefeld will still be accessible on Instagram, but was it on Instagram where Liefeld ranted after quitted DC during the Nu52, implying his editor had a small penis? Was it on Instagram where Liefeld insulted DC's entire roster of creators as unable to pull off the then-upcoming DC Rebirth relaunch? Was it on Instagram where Liefeld called everyone who ever worked on Deadpool comics besides him a "D-Lister?" Was it on Instagram where Liefeld got into it with Tom Brevoort that one time, or that other time? Was it on Instagram where Liefeld accused Mike Mignola and Mark Silvestri of pioneering the art of not drawing feet? Was it on Instagram where Liefeld said that anyone who worked with him back in the 90s was lucky to hit the Liefeld lottery? Was it on Instagram where Liefeld said he could have created Deadpool with a janitor just as easily as with Fabian Nicieza?

Would you mind showing me the $70 sketch by Finch? I’m curious to see how much work he put into a $70 sketch.

I have to admit. Snake Eyes is the best Leifeld art I have ever seen. Not saying much, I know.

LOL! Not much! It actually cost me about $40. But,that was 15 years ago so I tried adjusting for inflation. What was impressive was how fast he drew it. Less than 10 minutes.

I thought I was getting something fairly unique, but Google David Finch sketches and see how similar they look to this one:

Okay, well maybe he is a dick after all. I never liked his work anyway.

Umm have you seen the crap marvel has been putting out lately?

Why should I care about Rob Liefeld? Either you like his style or you dont

He does look at them. From porn movies and famous people and then he traces them.

That's the problem.

If you said Greg Land, I'd be with you. No famous person nor pornstar was referenced in these illustrations, I promise you. When he traces, it looks reasonable, like this version of Roadblock he ripped off.

The tracings look good because somebody talented made the originals. These earlier pieces are the autopilot, effortless junk he normally kicks out.
