Rob Liefeld Tries to Draw G.I. Joe Characters

LOL! Not much! It actually cost me about $40. But,that was 15 years ago so I tried adjusting for inflation. What was impressive was how fast he drew it. Less than 10 minutes.

I thought I was getting something fairly unique, but Google David Finch sketches and see how similar they look to this one:

Yeah, for $40 that’s a good price, not for $70 though.

god, i remember when i was a kid and rob, jim lee, mcfarland, and all those comic legends broke out, rob was the worst. i remember at the comic store, being amazed by the covers from these guys, and remember thinking WTF when i saw rob liefields. i didn't really look into how this guy managed to stay in the business, but this thread explains a lot!

Rob Liefeld might be a hack, but I'm glad he exists. I'm sure his work has inspired countless artists to join the field knowing they can do better. Besides, how many mediocre artists has garnered so much attention, become so successful, and is so easily identified by his artstyle even to untrained passersby? Good for him.

Realism isn't everything though. Liefeld's problem isn't that his work is unrealistic, it's that he blends realistic with hyperstylized in inconsistent fashion seemingly without following any principals. His posing is odd and stiff, his anatomy accuracy all over the place... often on one character. He lacks an eye for detail, but doesn't know when to stop adding detail. His humans emote like aliens (or robots), and his sense of perspective and proportion swing wildly from normal to wtf.

If you said Greg Land, I'd be with you. No famous person nor pornstar was referenced in these illustrations, I promise you. When he traces, it looks reasonable, like this version of Roadblock he ripped off.

The tracings look good because somebody talented made the originals. These earlier pieces are the autopilot, effortless junk he normally kicks out.

Are there any examples of "good" work from him? I see soooo much bad stuff posted about him, I'd like to see if there is any good, cause based off everything I've seen he seems like someone who somehow fell upwards in a career he's not very good at...
Liefeld's best work was early in his career, when his pencils were inked by Karl Kesel

The extreme, constipated Liefeld style is there, but the anatomy is better than anything afterwards

The stuff you guys are posting in this thread is the reason I could never get into American comics, and superhero comics above all.

I enjoyed some classic Spider-Man comics from Lee and Ditko, even some of the late 80s-early 90s stuff, but this “art” here... everything about it feels wrong to me. The anatomy, the proportions, the perspective, the color, the layout of the panels, the constant one-liners... everything.
