Robert E. Lee descendant pushed to leave pastor post after racial justice speech

Christianity in the context of history, especially in American history (all the Americas), has a lot to answer for when it comes to promotion and engenderment of racism within their ranks.

This man chose to try to rise above that, and this was his reward from the "faithful".

This sounds more of a USA thing than religion, i mean it was their goddamned pastor who was asking for decency and no bigotry and these "heritage not hate" types went like "nah, fuck you".

Tell us all a cool story about how Christians or any other major religion outside of the US has done only right and spoken only truth for the last couple millennia.

I get it that this is a shitty thing for his congregation to do to him, but holster that broad brush, there's a fuckton of Americans who are outraged by this, or have been driven from the church for exactly this kind of shit.

That's not a "USA thing," that's a human nature thing.

Funny thing here is that he was preaching, and pretty well too.

Stop trying to make Jesus political, hippy. Now stand aside while we pass religious exemption laws to keep gays out of ice cream cake shops and Federal employment, transgenders out of bathrooms & the military, plan B and contraceptives out of pharmacies & health plans, and abortions out of anywhere in a 300 mile radius.

yep I honestly have no desire to ever step foot in a church again and honestly dont want to marry anyone that is remotely religious. I have yet to see anything good come out of churches other than just backwards thinking and maintaining the status quo.

He said B-B-B-B-Black Lives Matter!?
Oh no, what do we do?
Can we ask him to just...you know...leave?
Yeah...it's the Christian thing to do...I think...

Unless I'm mis-reading, that sounds like a perfectly valid thing to say. 'Don't be racist, don't be silent when you see racism,' is a pretty damn good message to preach, considering the whole 'love thy neighbor' part of Christianity.

Did he get booted out by racist church-goers, or what?

Yes

And if the descendant of Robert E Lee, glorified Confederate hero, isn't able to reach out to these racist pricks, what chance does a minority have?

NOW can we admit that trying to reach these people is bloody useless?

Yeah, for some reason I thought it would be the other way around when I clicked on the thread. I blame my naivete on a lack of sleep.

That'd only make sense if large portions of the community would actually take a step back and try to see exactly what they're doing in relation to what they're preaching.

But that's too hard, apparently. Much easier to pay lip service to religious ideals while laughing at the less privileged from the same pulpit they claim to represent love and mercy.

When people say you just need to talk to them.

You have the direct descendant of their idol, their own pastor basically saying it's wrong. Combining both God and their Southern "Pride" into one.

And what do they do? Kick him out. You're not going to get through to these people. They will be kicking and screaming the entire way through.

Mother fucking this.

No, im saying this shit is very american, very "we're dealing with these civil war era mindset for an embarrassing long ass time" issues, but sure, be the guy who sees the actual fucking pastor being the good guy and still go "fuck religion, am i right?".

Again, this is an american thing, because these people are clinging to a heritage of hate, they're being assholes and hypocrites regardless of religion, you could remove religion from the equation, like just make it about a republican leader saying the same thing, and the reaction would be the same, because this is an issue specific to american history.

I honestly thought this was going to be about a hyper-liberal congregation kicking their pastor out for something he can't control.

This is way worse.

You know it's not actually that surprising, i mean, what other road do you have when you learn your family name is tainted like that?

Dude what the fuck? He didn't even call any of them white supremacists or racist or anything. He literally just said, "This is bad, don't ignore it." What is wrong with people?

Or, in a bizarre twist, I could just keep religion in the equation and remove American history and show that religious assholery, hypocrisy, and a heritage of hate very much isn't an issue specific to American history.

Because the fact is, you're simply wrong.

It's not any different from the white people who start handwringing whenever the topic of racism comes up in online conversations because they're afraid that it might be applied to them. It's the result of people who are perfectly happy with racist but terrified of the label "racist".

Once you open that can, yo can't put the contents back in.

The clergy condoned every phase of American Indian genocide and African slavery and subsequent oppression through the entirety of American history through *today*. It was never all of them, but it was always enough of them to ensure people of color stayed oppressed and their oppressor congregation members stayed comfortable and believing themselves to be heaven-bound.

I do occassionally wonder if religious southern whites in particular think generations of their family didn't go to heaven given their lifetimes of accepting and/or aiding slavery. Or more directly stated: if they've accepted that whole generations of their ancestry went straight to hell. I do wonder.

Ah yes, because no wars or atrocities have happened without religion as the cause, right?

Let alone, silly me for pointing out the american nature of this thread's case in which the pastor descendant of a historic confederate general integral to the American Civil war commented on events pertaining the statue of his ancestor in the current american political climate and decided to weight in as a pastor by providing his perspective on these current events, resulting on the church goers doubling down on their confederate heritage rather than listening to their religious leader.

Silly me.

Seems odd that a church he's the pastor of would have a congregation that would disagree with what he's saying. Like, how do you go to a church where the pastor is going to have this sort of attitude (IE: an actual christian attitude) and somehow still harbor enough blatant racism that i makes you uncomfortable to hear it?

That congregation doesn't deserve thsi dude, tbh.

They issued a statement a few weeks ago about Charlotteville and that is how i found out. It's really fascinating, anyone with that linage should be all rights be wearing the hood and robes and being proud as punch.

They should do a documentary on the family.

The church was probably proud they had General Lee's descendant as a pastor. To learn he was against all that he stood for and more must've shaken them to their core.

"I just want to be racist" springs to mind.

Well, good on him for speaking out. Hope that he finds somewhere more accepting.

Given the reference I've seen tossed around that after the war Lee was opposed to Confederate monuments, I think at some basic level the family has long been aware and accepting of how not only was their ancestor's side was the loser of the war, but what that loss actually meant. Even a simple glance at his postwar politics section on wikipedia suggests he had a really weird, really complex set of values after the war, so the possibility of such values morphing over time through the descendants into something more solidly positive seems... not too out there.

The "why don't you do your job instead of spending time (saying something I dislike)" criticism is so boring and cowardly. Just attack what he said like we know you are trying to do.

You can tell how frustrating it must be for them to actually be defending/deflecting away from literal nazis and KKK

At this point it should be obvious for everybody that White Supremacy is their religion, and Christianity is merely a front.

Amazing how much Christianity has been used as a tool for White Supremacy throughout history and now...yet people still don't call them out on it. Slavery and misogyny is justified from passages in the bible yet it's the same book you live our life by?

The latter.

Is it possible to really be blind to be the racism surrounding the Confederacy? Even saying that it's surrounding the Confederacy is misleading; it's what the Confederacy is. It's the sole reason for its existence. Most of its national flags were primarily white as a symbol of white supremacy, because that was their core value. You can sweep it under the rug with state rights and the fantasy of the old south, but I'd imagine that if you dwelled on that for even a moment you'd have to realize that slavery was at the core of those as well.

I think there might still be a layer of "blindness" ingrained in society because of institutional racism being taught has the ideals of heritage/freedom/patriotism. I'm not saying it isn't racist, but that some may legitimately think it isn't because that's what they were taught to believe. It's similar to how some communities viewed Obama as President were all based on racism, but those in the system couldn't see it as such. Forest from the trees situation where racism is learned and labeled something else. I mean, they still teach a "not a slavery issue" in schools when it comes to the reason for secession.

Btw, I know quite a few people who still honestly feel that the Confederacy was about states rights and not slavery, that Lincoln made states weaker by his actions during and after the civil war, and that secession is still a good idea while also saying up and down they aren't racist.

One commenter wrote that there was “no way” Lee was a Christian and that “it seems anybody that wants to protect our country is a racist, or white supremacist. … It’s a sin to use your position to name-call and judge.”

Man these people are fucking losers.
