Robert Rodriguez is getting the gig to direct Escape From New York, the remake of John Carpenter’s iconic 1981 film that’s set up at 20th Century Fox. The studio won a bidding battle for rights to the reboot in early 2015, with Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman’s The Picture Company set to produce. Neil Cross (Luther) is penning the script.

The deal cements the relationship with Rodriguez and Fox; the director just helmed the studio’s Alita: Battle Angel, the film based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga graphic novels that was written by James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. Set in a 26th century dystopian future, the film follows the story of an amnesiac cyborg who, after being rescued from a scrap heap by a doctor, becomes a bounty hunter tracking down criminals. Rosa Salazar and Christoph Waltz star in the pic which has a July 20, 2018 release date mapped out.

"Never said I wasn't a hypocrite."
I'm okay with this. Once Upon a Time in Mexico is still one of the coolest, stylistic action movies ever.

Like 90% of the reason the original is so great is because it's 80's as fuck. The way it looks, the way it sounds, the special effects, the pacing. By definition, making an updated version is going to strip a lot of that away.

No thanks.

I don't think Rodriguez will restrain the cheese if we go by his movies

If we're lucky, Rodriguez takes the general premise and does his own thing with it, since the original already played out in an unexpected yet satisfying way (AYYYY NUMBAH ONE) versus similar films.

If we're expecting nothing, it'll be basically the same film with a cast of actors not nearly as respected in the field of B-movie filmmaking with a shitload of green screen to save on costs and the usual chewing-gum-and-twigs polish that Rodriguez is notorious for and some cameos that distract further from the story that they're trying to tell.

I'm down for this. I adored EFNY, but even Carpenter himself couldn't match that one with L.A. So I'm interested in a remake.

Rodriguez has got serious style, and I think he might make a cool flick. I'm looking forward to seeing who he's gonna cast for Snake.

Alita sounds a whole hell of a lot like megaman. Never looked into it, but if Christoph Waltz is a Dr.Light type character I'm in.

Remaking these movies with classic characters is just a dumb idea. Whoever they get won't be anywhere near as good as Kurt Russell. Did they not learn from Robocop and Total Recall?

If this remake doesn't have music half as good as the original then it has already failed.

If for nothing else, Rodriguez has always been pretty good at aping Carpenter in the soundtrack department. That's probably the least worrisome aspect to consider with this project.

I can't wait to see the Battle Angel trailer or even a teaser. Should be coming soon...

Fox must be happy with the outcome so far.

I never understood the hate for Escape from L.A.

It's a solid, entertaining movie. New York is better, obviously, but L.A. is still a great flick.

Why the hate?

Benicio Del Toro

I have zero idea.

I LOVE Ebert's review. He gets it.

Futuristic Los Angeles fantasies have uneven histories at the box office; neither ”Blade Runner" nor ”Strange Days" did all that well in their initial theatrical releases. But ”Escape From L.A." has such manic energy, such a weird, cockeyed vision, that it may work on some moviegoers as satire and on others as the real thing. That could lead to some interesting audience reactions. John Carpenter as a filmmaker has been all over the map, from the superb (”Halloween") to the weirdly offbeat (”Christine," ”Starman") to the dreary (”Village of the Damned"). This time he simply tears the map up; the implications of his final scene are breathtaking. Good for him.

Because nothing was going to match those expectations.

Similar to the new Thing movie. It's/they're not a bad movie(s) by any means, but when you have to stand on the shoulders of giants you gotta knock it out of the park lest you be knocked down to earth with a sledgehammer of fanrage.

I'm down for this. RR got skills to make this at least decent.

100%. He kind of got stuck in his DIY mode of filmmaking for a while, but it's cool to see him getting back in the game. He's has oodles of smarts, chops, and always innovative.. I'm pulling for him.

Plus, I LOVE his directors series on his network. It's fucking great!

Mike from Red Letter Media hadn't seen either movie before he watched Escape From New York for their review. He didn't like it much and I got a decent chuckle out of his wish list for the movie because he basically wanted Escape From LA.
