Robocop conducts security patrol in Fukuoka

FUKUOKA -- T63 Artemis, a robot gave its first large-scale patrol of a shopping arcade here Friday night, its developers said Saturday.

Mainichi Shimbun
A robot inspects streets in Fukuoka.

T63 Artemis is capable of shining lights and emitting alarms if it spots anything untoward.

"We want to continue experiments on indoor and outdoor security robots, hopefully setting them up throughout the country if we can make them practical enough," developer Yasuaki Hiyama said.

It first conducted a security patrol in February, but was then limited to a scope of about 5 meters.

On Friday night, however, it patrolled an 80-meter shopping arcade, detecting and memorizing car license plates it found in the area.

Revelers who watched the T63 Artemis on its rounds stood by and watched in amazement as it swept through the arcade. (Mainichi Shimbun, Aug. 28, 2004)

I wish this country was more ambitious in some of these areas because we're so behind in areas like broadband, wireless, and robotics.... but damn if we can't blow something up.Story Link

In Chopping Mall they have robots for security and then lightning hits the mall setting them to kill everything....luckily some 25 year old actors playing teenagers are partying in the mall when this occurs.

ED209 from Robocop(1987)? Not sure if it pre-dates the original deus ex or not though.

Man I feel old for remembering how hilarious ED209 was.

Japan is cool and all, but it is way behind the U.S. in broadband and wireless Internet.

But as for making freaky robots and love pillows, Japan's got us beat.

Really? Check out this Businessweek article. It's Japan (and Korea) running over the US.

Don't expect to share in the travails of Winter Sonata's lovers anytime soon. That's because the U.S. is becoming something of a broadband backwater, a place where almost no one can do what Kato and millions of other Japanese take for granted. Many Americans may think that the U.S. is making progress because the number of broadband Net links continues to climb, but that misses the bigger picture.

The U.S. has steadily fallen behind other nations, both in terms of the share of the population with broadband and the speed of those connections. Consider this: In 2000 the U.S. ranked third in broadband penetration among the nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development. Last year it dropped to 10th place. That's behind recognized leaders such as Japan and Korea, as well as countries like Belgium and Canada. "It's ridiculous that the U.S., of all places, is so far behind in this key measure of economic development," says Tim Johnson, publisher of London's Point Topic, which analyzes world broadband trends.

The result is that U.S. consumers can pay $35 or more for a 1.5-megabit-per-second connection, compared with Yahoo! BB's price of $25 for 26 megabits.

Indeed - you can just take a look at some of the things that NTT Docomo is doing with iMode and it wipes the floor with everything mobile in the US.

EDIT: Shit Beaten!
The current popular "Don't you wish your robot was swass like T63-tmsuk?" would also have been acceptable.

I don't understand, is this thing supposed to be a deterrent to crimes. Unless that thing is able to tackle and handcuff you, I don't see it being much more than a novel gesture. I guess it's a starting point, but I'd much rather see my neighbor making 12 bucks an hour roaming the mall than seeing a robot.

That's definitely an interesting invention, but doesn't look very effective. I guess at most it's mainly a moving camera and maybe you can register complaints to it and a real security guard will come. Looks more for aesthetics than anything. "Cool! It's a robot!"

But anyways, are there any valid reasons why we're slipping back in broadband?

its just a mobile camera isnt it? its not like it has some visual recognition software? a crime-o-meter?

there may as well be a man in the can.
but all malls have a strange man in the can.

Japan's broadband situation absolutely destroys that of America's. No matter how fast your internet connection is, I guarantee mine is about 100 times faster and costs less (and doesn't flake out nearly as much).

Ignorance rules! :)

Yeah, it seems to be more of a mobile security system. Cameras, sensors etc.

Sure, it can only alarm actual security guards to something, but it's a start.

Model 2 will add a stun gun, projectile net, and death... I mean happy laser!

Insane For Sony
Things like this, or Honda's Asimo are of course just a novelty, but they can lead to some significant things for us. People often ask, why do you need a robot that walks and moves like a human (Asimo), when you can have a robot on wheels much faster? Well, one day, perhaps pretty soon, I can imagine the technology will be good enough to replace wheellchairs for people without legs. They will have fully robotic legs, and the technology moving them and keeping them in balance, will be the same technology that powers Asimo. Same with hands. Same with artificial vision, maybe. Shape recognition, etc. can help blind people. Imagine a small camera mounted on a blind man's jacket (inside the jacket button for example) that recognizes what is in front of him, and is updating him through an earbud ("You are approching the street crossing, trafic light is 1m on your right and it's red...") The things I mentioned are by no means science fiction, and are pretty level headed, and quite achievable even today, thanks to human-centric robotics. They all just need more polish.

Isnt rp "Ryan Payton" who lives in Japan and writes the column for XBN about its gaming scene every month? Weird. Anyway, I imagine the robot would be difficult to kick over as it probably weighs a ton or two. I think that thing is less for physical prevention and more for trying to make sure if it happens, it can be rectified.

Yay lets talk out our ass!! Not only is BB more widespread in Japan but hella faster and much cheaper. Nice try...next you'll convince us that Japan's cell phone technology is 2nd rate.

Like widespread broadband in Japan is some huge accomplishment. Japan is the size of my back yard.

Widespread as an percentage of people in the overall population that have BB...but nice try.

IAWTP. Point to a country even half the size of the continental US with broadband as dense and fast as Japan.

Wow, it only took a few stupid Americans and few wai-wai wannabe Japanese to turn this thread into another worthless broadband pissing contest.
