I don't understand why more people don't order their groceries online and have it delivered

I mean, I gotta leave the house for something.

People work from home now. You can order anything to your home. You can see people on Zoom or Facetime.

I have to get out of the house now and then. I don't like other people buying groceries for me, I want to pick them myself. I remember during COVID I ordered from Instacart and a lot of the time they didn't have what I wanted so they got me replacement items that I didn't want and I just was like nah ordering groceries isn't my thing. Also when you're at the grocery store sometimes you see new stuff and get new ideas.

I was doing it during covid, but I always found the services to be subpar. Tried different stores services and it was always the same thing. Items I wanted were out of stock, they couldn't pick fresh produce or fruit if their life depended on it. I would then go to the store myself and magically all the stuff would be in stock and I would get better produce myself.

Automating more and more aspects of life to digital/online solutions for the sake of "convenience"? Nah.

It's nice to go out and use my eyes, legs and arms. It's nice to look at, hold and compare produce and choose the best stuff.

When you do it in a shop you can pick stuff which has more date and is thus more fresh and less stale. You can compare alternatives thoroughly and switch on the fly too.

Even better, grow some of it yourself.

Nah I'm good man.

I want to pick the good shit. If they don't have what I want I want the chance to pick a substitute or go to a different store. I usually end up at 2-3 stores on a grocery run, some have better produce, others meat. Also the online orders always have ridiculous markup baked in.

I work from home so i prefer going to the store just to get out of the house. Last time i ordered groceries online i got stuff that had a few days until it expired. And I can only order online through Walmart which is more expensive than other grocery stores near me and their quality is always awful when it comes to meat and produce. I'm sure it comes in handy if you're disabled or do not have a car.

Are you not tipping for the delivery? No judgement just another cost associated with it. I have children and I enjoy taking my daughter with me to go grocery shopping. Also I like to be much more agile with my shopping. If I went expecting to make some specific meal and they're all out of major component I may totally change it up.

My neighbor talked me into trying Amazon Fresh, since I already have Prime, and holy shit. It's incredible.

As much as I hate to line Jeff's pockets any more than I need to, I can't deny how good it is. My produce was fresh and delicious, my overall grocery bill was literally about 40% LESS than if I had gone to my local myself, and it was delivered directly to my door. All in the same day.

So far the only downside was that I treated myself to a frozen pizza, which was Amazon brand, and it tasted horrible.

People think only they can only pick fresh produce and don't trust the picker. In some cases sure, in many it's all the damn same, I'm sorry.

We tried it once through WalMart and our bananas were mostly brown and the milk expired that day (thought it was easy getting the money back for those items through the app)

Never again

I'd rather go out and see the world than order shit through my screen. I've never understood the 'hassle' of shopping for groceries. You put it in a basket, pay and go home.
Some elderly people and handicapped people like myself don't drive?
Because I like to pick out my own fruit, veg and meat. I like to get the best quality produce and I can only do that by going to the store.
Didn't chose my shrooms, but eh medication.

I like going food shopping. It's fun to see what's available and make some weekly meal schedule changes accordingly.

I ordered grocery delivery last night, and for the first time, there was an option to tip defaulted to 10%. There was never a tip option before.

What % is proper? I kind of think it's bs.

it makes me feel bad to not tip, like regular food delivery like mcds or chinese food, they just drive and pick it up.
grocery delivery, they physically go into the store and walk around the whole place picking my snacks, toilet paper and soda and 4-5 packages of 24packs water bottles. then drive to my place and carry it all to my doorstep.

that said, I only do it when I get a 40% off online order offer or something where after the surcharges, its cheaper or the same price as just going myself.

I don't hate seeing other ppl, and sometimes is nice to go touch some grass. I'm also in a phase of my life where I despise technology (strange thing said on a videogame forum I know.).

The rise of delivery services/apps in a post-covid world has been crazy to watch. The tiny breakfast joint I work for will do $2k in delivery pickups on a typical Saturday or Sunday, on Mother's Day we broke $4k.

For breakfast, that shit is insane, and I haven't seen the like in over 30 years in the biz. I dunno how people afford it, you pay extra on top of menu prices plus the delivery fees and tips.
Somebody ordered to sides of fruit to go via Door Dash, it was $17 without the tip for the driver.
And it's fuckin breakfast people! You gonna tell me that a sunny side up egg or eggs benedict tastes good when you get it 30-45 minutes later?

Not sure what it's like overseas ,but when you do it here in SA you basically are given all the stuff that's about to go off or reaching expiration date.

Milk ordered in will expire in like a day where if I get at the shops, i can pick those that have a longer shelf life. At least that's my personal experience.

Because it's another step towards laziness. Automating everything or getting everything done for you just makes us physically inactive which isn't good for you. Same reason why I don't get an electric bike.

Don't trust their picks, their care, or the idea that my perishables could be sitting in a hot car for a long while if it's not first or second on the delivery guy's list, after having already sat outside the store's pick-grabbers' export area waiting for the delivery guy to pick.

I say this from experience as grocery-store department manager. Plus, most of my stuff is produce, and I'm like an old lady when it comes to picking out my produce. I inspect that stuff thoroughly.

  • I like walking and leaving the house
  • I like looking around the store to see what's on sale, or see if new items are in stock
  • I like picking my own stuff out
  • I have seen them sub stuff in or mess up orders multiple times
Just completely unnecessary. I can probably shop faster than I can select everything from the website. I live within 1.5 min of 2 grocery stores. I sometimes go to both for specific items also.

I'm more confused why more people don't do curbside when ordering fast food or something. I go to mcdonalds to get an iced coffee sometimes (although lately they screw it up and it tastes like crap), but I always do curbside. In doing so, I'm getting my order in a couple minutes, meanwhile there's a line of cars that are sitting still in the drive thru.

Because when I go and see the staff that are fulfilling these orders, they are just grabbing the first piece of whatever, like produce or meat.
I also like to leave my house, and I always get a few ideas of things to grab when I am there.
Oh, and despise apps at every single store, and I will even make my kids go with me as I know this will be a relic activity when they are my age - being in public with other humans, and gasp, ones you don't know.

Never again

My wife uses WALMART+ but we would never order groceries. She just gets dumb stuff that no one needs from delivered. I also got a mailbox destroyed by a W+ delivery driver. That was $2000.

Yeah if its not groceries we have used + for other items and have had some delivered but we had one delivery person that was a smoker (we hate the smell) and most of our stuff smelled like cig smoke

We still do the pick up orders from time to time for items we don't care if we actually can look at before hand mainly like fruits or items that may expire quickly

I had a dude walk by me at church yesterday that smelled of smoking. I thought he must be a deacon.

A 2000$ mailbox? Plus you guys still have mailboxes!?

My wife and I both have never smoked and she had a great aunt that fired up a cig in my living room once at a party like 20 years ago

Being one of those people that has very little filter I told her its either out or she is and she takes a big drag and just blew the smoke and just stared at me

The dick that I am party was over and everyone was tossed and my mother in law still to this day hasn't 100% forgiven me as she likes to bring it up every now and then

I'm the type of person who goes grocery shopping for one thing and comes back with that thing and 3 other things I remembered I needed.

I buy groceries on my way home from work (via bycicle). Hardly lose any time and yeah I choose the freshest of milks and the cruchiest apples available (flick them, high pitch sound is the best).

I like to pick which fresh produce I'm buying.

If you are buying avocados picking which ones depends if you want to eat them right now or in a couple of days.

I like picking my own food. And shopping at this small-town Raley's is pretty relaxing.

Though the one time I ordered online because there was a sale on pork, and they delivered about 8x 10LB pork shoulder butts for free.

As others have said, I like to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Also the one time I tried it with my local supermarket they gave me some stuff that was pretty close to the expiration date. I complained and they replaced it, but if I have to check the expiration date on everything they give me it looses some of the convenience.

Walmart is the only grocery store in my town that delivers and I either have to pay a $9.95 delivery fee or subscribe to Walmart+ for "no fee delivery". Regardless of fees, the last time I ordered delivery their app showed default 10% tip minimum on deliveries.

Given that we usually do a full month's shopping at once, spending $400+, a $40 minimum tip plus the cost of either the fee or the monthly Walmart+ membership doesn't make it worthwhile. That's $40 I could spend elsewhere.

So we do curbside pickup for the vast majority of the groceries which isn't subject to those fees, and while they're loading up the car either I or my wife runs inside to choose the produce and milk ourselves.

I buy green peppers a lot and I often see shriveled peppers on offer at the store. In those cases I skip buying. If I wanted a pepper some online shopper doofus would put that shriveled pepper in the bag. That's just one example. No thanks.

I also don't order door dash or any thing similar. That's a different reason. Those people are bottom of the barrel employees. You can barely call them employee. Most can't hold a job at a regular company that's why they get door dash jobs. Filthy cars, no food training at all. I don't want these people near something I am going to eat. They just finished fingering their dog's ass and picking their nose and now go walk in to pick up my feed bag? No thanks.

Oh I completely forgot about the upcharge for delivery and they probably expect a tip. No fucking thanks. I'll buy my $27 3-pack of eggs without the extra charge.

A nice walk is never a bad thing. Its like 20 minutes on foot from me, and i don't have any issues with it, even during winter when its cold af.

Have you guys tried like…shopping in person for vegetables and fruits and ordering everything else?

Anyway, another way in which France is superior - we have a selected products being clearly marked as "close to expiration" for a reduced price when ordering either online or in store.

I'll pass on delivery. I go in the store to pick my own fruit and veg but for other things (canned goods, cereal, etc), I will order online for pickup. I can pull up to Kroger on my way home and have all that stuff shoved in my trunk in a few minutes.

Veggies/produce, meats, canned goods, pasta/rice, bread, butter, eggs, milk and bacon. Those are my main items for my shopping trip.

Stuff like toilet paper, paper towels and house cleaning items I'll order from Amazon or go to Costco in bulk to save money. The Costco is about a mile and a half from me so no biggie.

For emergency items I'll need same day I'll just go to the same grocery store and grab a coffee on the way out.

Most of the time I shop, it's slow and relaxing for me so unless it's a holiday weekend where it's packed, I'll take time out to walk around.

I order Amazon whole foods all the time for anything other than produce but I feel like their selection is pretty limited? Or maybe the interface is just shit and keeps showing me the same items? Logistically I'm not sure how it works. Does a whole foods employee bag all the shit u want and somebody picks it up? Or does it all come from a different warehouse specifically for online orders?
