If the entire "transaction" can be done over the phone, I guess you could just chalk it up to a glorified interview question and do it. They might be giving you a simple test to see how you interact with potential clients.

If you actually have to do semi-major work and show up at the client's office, I would go the "once I have the job" route.

The problem I have now is that they asked me to do this and I haven't even been hired yet.

People I used to work with call with questions from time to time. I help them for free. They also call with job offers from time to time. Intangible benefits from doing free work many times will far exceed the value of the money you would have been paid.

As long as it exports with no extra cost, I see this the same as AC/DC.

heck, Ideally, I'd like it to:
a) Export with no additional cost
2) selectively export
iii) cost around $1.25 per song

If it does these things, then I'd like to see these be done for a dozen different bands. Have a "Rock Band" line of band-specific disks. Heck, we know two more Jimi albums are coming, I wouldn't be surprised if they were handled this way as a single disk release as well.

Is it milking? I'd see it more establishing a new product, it's not like they're shoehorning in a career and charging full price.

Like I covered when it was announced by Nintendo's European slate, there's really little doubt that it is anything but. Hell, it's even called Rock Band: Pearl Jam Live.
