This game was awesome. Awesome was this game.


Rock N Roll racing was one of the first games developed by Blizzard, and what a great start of their career. I remember how much I loved the RC pro am games for nes, and I was totally estatic when a game similar to that came to snes.(and mega drive)

The graphics were slick, and how cool wasn't the announcer? I wasn't used to that back in the days.

Nothing was better than laying a rocket into a friends car before passing him on the goalline. There was also countless fights for picking up the money on the track as it was very important to buy parts and new cars.

A classic that must be played.

You can't imagine how many times I heard that while playing the game. What I found funny was that Olaf, of the Three Vikings, could be unlocked through a cheat. A friend of mine had it, and we played through it countless times. It never got old, still doesn't! :D
 
In college back in '93, a friend and I stayed up until 4:00 in the morning - about an 8 hour marathon - playing Rock N Roll Racing. The phrase, "Ivan launches himself" quickly became an in-joke between the two of us.

That same friend came out for a visit last year, so I hunted down a used copy, and we blew the entire day playing it - still such an incredibly fun game. The isometric perspective gave it such a great feel; something we're likely to never see again.
 
I've come to the conclusion that announcers make games better... think about it...

This, Gauntlet, Halo, Myth, NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct...
 
Absolutely! R'n'R Racing was one of the 16-bit greats.

That announcer was hilarious and how about that soundtrack? Sabbath, Steppenwolf...

I have to go and play my copy now.

I'll endorse this thread. /thumbs up!

Must have rented the game several dozen times over the span of 2 years. (we had some fantastic rental deals that allowed us to not buy and save). It's right there along with Super Mario Kart in fun, multiplayer and replay ability, IMO.

I know some sort of sequel came out for the PSX a few years later, but it was SINGLE FUCKING PLAYER and that alone ruined the spirit of the original. Fun game, but no where NEAR the experience of Rock N Roll Racing. /salute and bow
 
Always loved those spiked landmines that blow out into a dozen more when hit, then watching your buddyÂ’s car bounce around on them while you passed him :lol
 
I think Rock N Roll Racing was released on the GBA about a year ago if I remember correctly. I thought about picking it up just to support Blizzard because of my love for WoW.
 
definately, this was one of the greatest games ever. we used to love to drop 'butt bombs' (what we called them anyhow) all across the road laying in wait for your buddy. the satisfaction i got from that was awesome.

great, great game.

p.s. was it Blizzard who made this game? it was from some dev who is famous now.. i forget though.
 
Loved this game back when I was a teenager. I could spend hours and hours playing with a friend of mine. After some time I developed the ability to release a misile (not homing one) and hit the enemy even when he was in the opposite corner and while I was turning. Now, those where the times...

by strange circumstance I played both these games, on the same day, on gba :0

krappy kemco has a crazy chase port.
 
I've probably poured more hours into R&R racing than in WoW. Easily one of the best 16 bit (racing) games, another cool aspect was the fact that it was easy to learn and hard to master, you could do some awesome stuff once you got the hold of it. Turn around when in the lead and shoot a missile in a pursuers face, skip parts of the track with the jump jets, hit people with missiles who were on the other side of the track, the possibilities were endless. Great art and music as well. Awesome game.
 
It was certainly a great game.
By far my most favorite game of the SNES.
Too bad I sold it along with my SNES when the N64 came out.
I'll have to search again for an old copy so i can play it again. The SNES is already back here :)

Ha, we called them "poopy bombs." As in, "Oh, I see you've left some poopy bombs for me." *calmly attempts to steer clear of them*
 
I really enjoyed using oil. It was the most funny weapon. mines were far too common, oil was great and frustrating for enemies. Specially human enemies :D It was a blast to win courses with an old car with the ability to jump high and leave oil behind.
 
I had so much hope for the 32bit version. I was very disappointed when the name changed to Red Asphalt and the gameplay sucked.

RARR PS3 please. Aww man, that would be incredible.
 
dude me and my bro rocked out this game more than i can say... he hated video games and this was one of the one things i remeber from when he was here

good memories thanks for the trip :)

I love this game. Man, the there was even a two-player campaign mode (never really stuck it out long enough to get tot eh really fun part, though). It always started off so slow - I remember eventually powering up your vehicle to a beast of a machine.

Loved using the springs as shortcuts, by jumping corners - even funnier was using oil slicks at appropriate places to make people fall off the track (remember that lava stage - if I remember correctly, it had no walls). I liked the oil because it stayed there for the entire race, meaning you could put more and more each lap, on the same corner, causing a sliding mayhem for ages.

Seriously, there was a GBA version? My SNES was stolen long ago, with all my games. I want to get all my favourites on GBA again...
 
A rock'n'roll racing appreciation thread is worthless without some love for Tim Follin's soundtrack.

Actually, i prefer when he writes his own stuff, but he made those electric guitars sound so authentic...
 
Games don't have soundtracks like these anymore :(

It had Deep Purple - Burn & Highway Star, Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Steppenwolf - Born to be Wild, Bad to the Bone and maybe a couple I missed. Launching the game and having Bad to the Bone kick in was something!
 
R&RR is awesome. Blizzard sure don't make games like this anymore. :P Fun fact: it's one of the few snes games than ran at 30fps. :P

BTW, does anybody remember the name of a C64 game that was very similiar to R&RR?

I was so impressed with the soundtrack that I transferred it to a cassette. I still appreciate the music of today's games, but I was always so amazed at what SNES and Genesis composers were able to squeeze out of those sound chips.

Same with Lost Vikings - that music was fantastic.
 
Isometric and top down racers fukki'n pwnz!

I like the detailed graphics around the tracks and the detailed cars. I played this on my PSP yesterday, it was actually funny.
 
Yeah like the soundtrack to Plok! being shit hot. Anyway when I asked him before through an person I know how he did most of the music for both Plok! and Rock and roll racing he said he used real instruments and then when put through the snes soundchip they would come out quite synthetic sounding.
 
I too share this threads love for this old game. I own the GBA version actually. I'd kill for a remake of it with 3D graphics and actual CD quality music. Interplay tried to make there own sequel , known has red Asphalt for ps1 , apparently it was garbage.
 
Absolutely played the hell out of this game. We played through the ENTIRE race series with multiple people, and that took a hell of a long time. I think the mid races were the best, I didn't like the hovercar autohoming nonsense as much. Across the track missiles ruled.

You still occasionally hear someone in the group quoting the announcer.
 
I wish I could hunt down a copy of R&RR GBA, because it'd definatley complete the missing GBA port series that Blizzard put out.

Shame we wont be getting Lost Vikings 2 GBA...

Edit: Though this is an R&RR thread, can someone name all the songs they put in the game so I can...uh....track them down? (Obviously I do not rock hard enough to remmeber the names despite listening to some of them on my classic rock station)

Oh man, that's it! The game is motherfreaking awesome, I loved how you could adjust the gravity in the levels. First time I ever noticed "physics" in a game. :)

p.s. ...what happened to the EA behind this game? :\
 
This was one my all-time favorites on the SNES. The music and commentary was incredible back in the day. My friends and I played this game hour after after hour. Needless to say, I bought it when it was ported to the GBA.

I remember playing RPM Racing years before Rock N Roll Racing hit shelves, and I loved that game as well. It felt like a 16-bit RC ProAm. When I had learned Rock N Roll Racing was coming out and was to be a sequel of sorts, I knew it was going it was kick ass.

Yeah, I used to do that, too, as well as shoot any drivers far behind me as I spun around corners. Great stuff.
 
I actually own Red Asphalt.. the game play sucks, but I did enjoy the FMV intros and story breaks for the different characters.
