Seriously GAF, this is like the new jewel of multiplayer competitive gaming.
This is huge.

And PS+ is a big part of it.

Man, this game is just pure arcadey fun. Matches are the perfect length to jump in and play a quick match when you have a few minutes free.

Why the fuck do I have to be at work. It isn't like we are busy or anything :( I still have my 360 and N64 here. Should've brought the ps4.

Seeing the hype for this game makes me wonder why nobody knew SARPBC. That one was given away with PS+ too.

Exactly. They played exactly the same.

Whoever originally posted those camera controls: thank you! I noticed an immediate improvement in my game, and I find myself no longer using the ball cam. It's a little too fish-eye for my taste, but it's a small price to pay for seeing so much more of the field.

Yup. It's so weird the previous game didn't review well while it was basically the same thing. In fact, SARPBC had far more variation in maps. Nice to know some of them will be added as free DLC, I loved playing on some of those crazy stages.

Oh yeah, has there been any word on when to expect these new maps?

I LOVE the weird-shaped stages

While the metacritic score is too low, Rocket League is much improved in various areas, SP content for one, and it's more approachable for new players

We'll get Utopia later this month

I love this game, but being unable to play online matches when I get home from work is slightly maddening. I have no idea why they can't seem to scale they servers. Demand is high since release, isn't this something that should be solvable by throwing more servers at it?

Still makes no sense to me. The single player modes and customization stuff doesn't justify the huge jump in general reception. It probably has to do more with the fact that indies were looked down upon back them much more than they are now.

I asked Psyonix about this in an interview, here is what they said:

"Me:
It's surprising how much bigger Rocket League has become, despite having identical gameplay to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. Why do you think Battle-Cars didn't take off as well, and what do you think has made Rocket League so beloved by so many players?"

Jeremy:
Timing is important in just about everything in life, and the timing for the original Battle-Cars wasn't as favorable to the style of game that it was in 2008. Back then, eSports wasn't really a thing, widespread competitive multiplayer was still only limited to shooters or RTS games at that point, streamers were non-existent and YouTube was still finding its footing. PSN was still fairly early as well and the original games on the platform were often not given the sort of attention by the media that are now. Those are all important factors.

But, it should also be noted that we think Rocket League is a better game than Battle-Cars was. We have tried to improve every aspect of the game that we could -- visually, the physics, the customization, the AI, the season mode, dedicated servers, you name it."

It was a lot of time ago, before the ps+ 2.0, because I've been subbed for 3 years and i don't have it. Btw I'm gonna buy it as soon as i get a PSN credit card as I don't have a ps4 yet :/ it is also surprisingly cheap right now.

Sounds about right.

I agree although just having adequate server space isn't the issue apparently. The particular servers they're using bottleneck whenever they hit certain numbers of concurrent users online and so far they've been unable to figure out why but are working on it. (source: one of the developers who often posts on here said it I believe).

I'd happily take a days downtime in order for them to transfer over to another provider. It's vital that I get online this weekend as I've got 3 guys coming over with their families just for a RL tournament (The wives seem to think it's for a BBQ but they're so so wrong)

Apparently it's not the number of servers. The devs have talked about it a few times in here.

I am very well informed when it comes to games and never heard of that game. I would not have heard about Rocket League either if people would not have been hype about the beta on here.

Just wanted to be sure. Adding rocketleague-gaf (psn) and then adding its friends is still the best way to add gaf members, right?

Yeah, the PS4 beta really blew up on GAF. I think there were a few threads about the PC alphas and betas but hardly anyone posted in those and they died immediately :p. Glad it got so much hype eventually, the game really deserves it.

I just started my summer vacation. Rocket League, here I come (well, I have to go away to visit family on Sunday, but after that)!

I wonder if this game will spawn a thriving competitive/eSport scene. It's also very, very fun to watch as a spectator and you require 0 knowledge of the game to enjoy.

Yeah, that's definitely a thing in this game's favor. There's nothing to explain, you just get it. In contrast, if I ever watch a DOTA/LOL game I have absolutely no idea what's going on beyond the basics, so it's just not fun for me. "Easy to learn, hard to master" applies so damn well to RL.

Because Rocket League sounds a lot better than that nonsense; the name, branding and polish is everything. No offence to anyone involved, but at a glance that looks like a poor XBLA indie game.

There's been a lot of hype building up for RL for a year or so as it's got more coverage, and with PS4 now having a huge platform margin, right-place-right-time also comes in to it.

Nobody hearing about it, plus the fact that the name gave me the impression that it was going to be a junky game so I didn't give it a second look.

That's what I miss the most. Arenas are nice, but the true fun and variety came with the odd shaped ones. I hope we see some multi-level areas. Something with pyramid tiers would be fun. Plus those lessen the skill level disparity we see now where experts are instantly at a huge and obvious advantage over moderate players.

I agree with your request, I couldn't disagree more with your reasoning. Artificially leveling the playing field is a horrendous reason to want different maps.

Making progress on servers. We were allowing people back in in chunks but hit a database issue around 60% of traffic. Hoping to have it sorted ASAP.

Hahahah this is awesome.

Listening through Andrew WK's I Get Wet to get hyped for some RL before work.

edit:
We had two bots (1 at the start, replaced by a player, then they disconnected almost immediately for another) who combined for a score of 1080. It was insane hahaha.

I don't even think having different arenas do that, quite the opposite, though I guess that depends on the arena. For example I found Cosmic would give a big advantage to better players who could fly, while someone like me had a difficult time as the ground game was at an disadvantage with the ramps leading up to the goals

If this were any other game I'd be giving it shit for how awful the launch has been server-wise but the game is so good and everyone at Psyonix seems so nice I have to give them a lifetime pass.
