Roller Coasters rides can be fun but...

Why are they so uncomfortable to sit and ride in? They should obviously put alot of cushioning in the seats and not have you sit and get banged by metal on every movement. I think roller coasters are too jerky, don't they have the technology to make them move smoothly by now? I dont see whey the tracks have to feel so bumpy and jerky.

Because if they were all soft and comfy, you wouldnt be experiencing as much fear as when you are sitting on the edge of a stool

I've found that wooden coasters are bumpy and jerky, but most of the inverted, metal ones are much much smoother. Is your complaint about both kinds in general?

Not all of them are uncomfy. Look at the seats for Behemoth at Canada's Wonderland. Seats are super comfy, almost like riding in an arm chair.

The worst experience by far is when you ride with someone fatter than you and that metal bar thing doesn't hold you both in place. :(

eh...the ride doesn't last long enough for comfortability to be a factor. And I have annual passes to Islands of Adventure here in Orlando, FL. So I ride plenty of coasters every year.

oh and....

Basically this; feeling that the train's about to fly off the track just adds to the thrill.

Besides you haven't experienced true discomfort if you never went on King Solomon's Mines (I think it's in Blackpool now) - at times it feels like your arms and legs are being hit by a guy with a sledgehammer.

I've never thought about it. I think all of the metal coasters I've been on had the harness come down over the shoulders. The wooden coasters I've ridden always had padded bars and felt really tight despite the air time on drops.

I pretty much only ride B&M coasters and they are as smooth as silk.

I know there's some kind of charm to being tossed around in a wooden coaster, but that's not why I love riding. For me, it's the illusion of flying, and no one can make you feel like a bird quite as well as the Swiss masters.

Ride better ones.

Some parks buy the cheapest crap, because 99% of the grand public doesn't care about comfort. Other parks only go for the absolute best, even if 1 ride costs the same as maybe 4 similar ones by another company.

The ones by Bolliger & Mabillard, preferably designed by Werner Stengel are the best: http://www.rcdb.com/r.htm?ot=2&co=6831

I'm terrified on roller coasters because I'm tall and I'm always worried my feet or head are gonna hit something.

(as if there's never been anyone as tall as me to ever ride that ride before I did)

Newer coasters aren't uncomfortable at all from my experiences yet still don;t make you feel super safe (see Apollo's Chariot, very exposed with little to hold you in). Old ones are usually jerky and uncomfortable (see the Loch Ness monster).

Long ago(around 8 years ago?) I tried a Roller Coaster on top of the New York New York Hotel in Las Vegas. It was one of the most motherfucking rough rides I've ever tried, felt like you'd been beaten up after you stepped out of the seat.
That one is known to be one of the worst in the world. Made by a cheap, sucky Japanese company and it's in the middle of the desert. The heat worsens the roughness.

Roller coasters are best in the morning hours and/or in the rain. They get rougher as the temperature rises.
Wood coasters are even worse, some parks even have sprinkler systems on the wooden coasters to keep them wet.

I like roller coasters, but I get bad motion sickness (on everything excluding planes for some reason) and even sometimes black out when I ride them - it sucks going to an amusement park and only being able to go on a handful of rides :(

^ which although pretty rough, has good restraints, similar to a life vest

Six Flags America and (Paramount's) Carowinds have the exact same ride though. It's an off-the-shelf, catalogue ride.

The only coasters I don't like are ones like the Mantis at Cedar Point where you are standing up. I always black out when you go through the loops. I guess it's something with the blood rushing to my head.

Old wooden ones that whip you around are awesome. F the OP.

I went on the Mantis. It felt like my calf muscles were going to rip off my legs, it sucked.

The centrifugal force makes the blood go to your legs, not your head. That's why you might see stars or even lose vision.
Very uncommon though, and you probably have low blood pressure too.

I like the stand-ups and wish they didn't go extinct. Only 14 exist in the world*, the last one built in 1999.

(* among 2400 coasters)

The Beast at Kings Island is the BEST hands down wooded coaster EVER.

I wish I had rode Son of the Beast before they took out the loop. Safety is overrated :lol

Where did that guy get his head loped off last year (or the year before)?

I love standup coasters, including the Mantis. But like others said some coasters are rough and some are smooth. Pretty much all new B&M and Intamin steel coasters are incredibly smooth, whereas your older steel coasters are going to be rough and wood coasters are always going to be rough.

I think a lot of newer coasters are incredibly comfortable - like I could actually fall asleep in them comfortable.

Wood roller coasters are coffins on wheels. I always regret getting on one each time the ride is done. And yet they're so much fun despite none of the loops.

I've only been on one Wooden Roller-coaster, Gwazi at Busch Gardens Tampa.
In comparison to other types of coasters, it's so rough.

I don't plan to ride it again when we go back sometime in Feb.

Plus the seats are a lot easier to clean. I'd rather sit in a uncomfortable plastic seat than a comfortable seat that has stains all over it.

Kingda Ka!

Came here to post this. Went there on a crappy day this past summer and got to ride it multiple times. The blastoff, and climb to the top is insane no matter how many times you ride it. The vertical drop feels like you are in one of those dreams where you fall off a building. Best ride ever.

I find most aren't bad or are about as good they can be all things considered, but I have had some that beat the crap out of you and it certainly doesn't add any thrill or enjoyment to the ride.

And since I'm being contrary, the times where the bar doesn't come down all the way because the passenger is big is good, especially for wooden, because when you go airborne you're holding yourself from flying out and dying just by your knees (seatbelts are wimps).

I think stand ups are the worst, wooden hit or miss, laying down ones cool, and regular suspension ones the best.

I live about an hour from Great Adventure in NJ and they are home to the tallest, fastest coaster in teh world.... Kingda Ka!

Fixed.

Fastest is now Ring Racer, built next to the Nürburgring circuit finish line. Opened last summer.
0-135 mph in 2.5 secs. Air launch. Made in America.

Kingda Ka "only" does 128 mph in 3.5s. Hydraulic launch. Made in Switzerland.

It slows down to about half that speed before the "turn around" though. But the actual acceleration is faster.

But both will be surpassed by a new one in Ferrari's Abu Dhabi theme park. 150 mph and it's an actual coaster to, not one of those tophat rides as Kingda Ka. Built by the same company though. Should open this year.

My current favorite roller coaster is The Hulk at Universal Studios Florida.

The ride itself is very smooth, it's just fast and constantly twisting you all over :P

The coaster's pretty average IMO but opening is awesome..."The Gamma radiation...I think it's working...WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

If you get to comfortable, you might get just comfortable to let go on the ride.
No one wants to clean that up. :lol
