ROOFLZ at Dream Theater's James LaBrie trying to sing like Metallica's James Hetfield

So, I'm listening to the bootleg of the DT concert where they covered the entire Master of Puppets album. Pretty cool stuff...EXCEPT for James LaBrie(the singer). He tries so hard to sound like Hetfield...and falls flat on his face. He should've just sung with his "normal" voice. If you want to have a laugh just search for this thing.

On another note...pretty sad that the only time Orion(Metallica's best song IMO) has been played live in its entirety was by a band other than Metallica. :p

Anyway, this is jett's random topic of the day.

I agree completely. It's especiallly bad on Master of Puppets. LaBrie's singing and the general fruitiness of their music are the major reasons I can't get into Dream Theater.

By the way would you happen to have a link for the cover of Orion? The only one I found was corrupt.

I agree that James should just stick to what he does best. He sounds good on the Dream Theater albums and is utterly fantastic on the Mullmuzzler albums and on Ayreon's "The Human Equation." When he's in his element, LaBrie is probably one of the better hard rock/metal vocalists around IMO.

It's not terrible singing.. but really.. James' voice isn't threatening AT ALL, which takes away from the covers. But can we all agree that the DT versions >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Metallica versions?

Labrie is still > Hetfield as well.

Labrie's voice doesn't bother me on DTs albums. What bothers me is the lyrics(and the flow sometimes), I guess I should blame Petrucci, right?

Or Mike Portnoy. they usually write equal amount of lyrics.

John Myung's songs are the best ones DT has (Learning to Live and Trial of Tears)

Yeah, while I'm a diehard DT fan the singing is pretty funny at times on the Master of Puppets covers. Are you listening to the shitty bootlegs or the official ytsejam records release?

EDIT: If you can find it, the Dream Theater cover of the Iron Maiden album Number of the Beast is pretty great.

DT's singer is terrible live
Not hardly... he had a few rough years but he was GREAT when I saw them in March and nearly perfect when I saw them in August (he has a new vocal coach whos helped him improve a lot)

Yea, he wasn't good for awhile, but now he is jsut PHENOMENAL!

When I saw them in March and August,, he was amazing. he struck me as amazing when he hit the "Whoa-hooooooo" part in Learning to Live dead on.

Yeah, I was actually just listening to Learning to Live from the Yes tour and I was thinking how amazing he handled it. When he hit the WHOAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOO I got chills :p.

Too bad you can't get into Dream Theater. I recommend listening to Metropolis Pt. 2, if you haven't.

But can we all agree that the DT versions >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Metallica versions?

Hehe...I don't know, really. At some parts, yes. But some songs lack "punch", since they are only being played with one guitar. Using the synth to replace the rythmic guitar(and sometimes the lead one) doesn't cut it. :p It's pretty cool that Dream Theater did something like this, though. They usually make fucking awesome covers. Their Led Zeppelin one in A Change Of Seasons is PERFECT.

Labrie is still > Hetfield as well.

Yep, yep. LaBrie is an excellent singer. He just can't imitate Hetfield worth a damn. :p

BTW, I'm listening to the official release. At first I got a worthless fanmade recording, which was just shit. :p
