Oh I understand what you mean by not being gimmicky shooting arrows and stuff. I was thinking more along the lines of those peaceful little floating jellyfish floating out of the screen maybe almost touching you floating around. Those floating ones that spiral out purple stuff flying around the audience would have looked nice, it would have been beautiful.

I also went into the movie totally inebriated in hopes of being "wowed" so when it didn't happen, I naturally felt a little dissapointed. :lol
 
So I dont know if this has been posted, but do you think
that when jake was hanging from the rocket we were about to get another true lies moment?
I was so waiting for it, but was pleasantly surprised when it didnt happen.

AVATAR left a bigger impression on me and was certainly the more euphoric cinema experience. But TDK is one hell of a subliminal movie.

For now, AVATAR, but in 12 months time, who knows. I just really liked the world of Pandora, so immersive. Also the rollercoaster, relentless action in the last third of AVATAR was much better than the action at the end of the TDK IMO.
 
For me. Though I like Nolan. TDK was no were near Memento and I found the Prestige to be more re-watchable than TDK. TDK was certainly a good comic book flick, but that's where it stops. Heath Legder and Oldman turned it from good, to great. Memento was what makes Nolan awesome, not TDK. Memento is an innovative perspective of film making. Not TDK. Which is why I hate it that people don't watch Memento. I'm looking forward to Inception, but only because of Memento, not TDK.

I much prefered the subtlety of the palm fronds that are in the foreground, or the holographic computer screens that have depth or best yet, when they look over high ridges/branches and you sense how high they are because of the 3D. Truth

Cameron's objective with the 3D was to make the film more immersive and visually resonant. I can think of little that would draw me out of the experience more than having shit thrown at my face while watching it. Like TA, the scenes showing great heights caused me to react almost physically because of how realistic the sensation of space was.

The few times something was tossed out at the audience it was actually to make the moment more immersive, by doing it slowly. The scene where the seeds decend and land on Jake at night comes to mind - they floated right out of the audience. It made me feel like I was there in a way 2D could not. But there was never a moment in the battles when an arrow or missile was thrown at my face to make me duck.

This is interesting. I can't say I've ever had any of these experiences. Never has a 3d movie made me feel the need to duck with 'gimmicky' use, nor have I ever felt anything actually floated past my head (from the audience) onto the screen. Or felt a display of something high up give me a sense of vertigo.

3d has, including Avatar, been largely superfluous to my enjoyment of movies so far. In general, it's only really caused me discomfort when either something moves off-frame in a way that's blatantly cut off or the depth of field annoyances I mentioned earlier in the thread. I wish I actually was having these experiences, because that might actually make all the effort and extra ticket price worth it for me. :P

Avatar.

I was underwhelmed with TDK and felt it was pretty over-hyped. Not a bad movie, just one that had more hype than what it was worth. Avatar, on the other hand, was worthy of the attention it has been receiving.

That's too bad. There were audible gasps from the audience at several moments in the movie when I saw it where the 3D was employed somewhat dramatically - the aforementioned night scene and Banshee flying among them. The ashes from
the destruction of the home tree when Jake wakes up was another
. It really affected me, and from the thread a lot of others (though obviously not everyone). Seems to be hit or miss.
 
No one for TDK yet?
It'd be interesting to see why.

The reason, is that TDK was hailed a cinematic achievement in terms of film making, when it first came out. I'd really like to know if someone still holds that stance.
 
Why is there even a TDK VS AVATAR going on? Even as a TDK fanboy, it gets annoying when its brought up for no reason like when it happened in the Iron Man 2 thread just last week.
 
Heh, guess people are running out of things to say here. Most everyone has seen the film here now. All that remains is to watch the numbers and trying to find tidbits on sequels, deleted scenes and such.
 
I was reading the comments on what people thought were their top 5 favourite scenes in the movie and I pretty much agree with what the majority have said. The movie has so many great scenes and you guys did a good job picking out the best. :D

But one scene that doesn’t get enough love - when the bulldozers are
destroying the white tree (tree of souls?) and how Jake wasn’t in his AVATAR and Neytiri was frantically trying to wake him up
. The music was perfect and I felt very bad for Neytiri.

Yeah, I mentioned that one a while back. It stood out to me as another spectacular example of Zoe's acting and the believability of her character and the CGI where you could see the terror/panic on her face. Jim had it nailed when he always said that true emotion is in the eyes.

My god yes...her helplessness in both trying to
prevent/grasp the destruction all aound her and waking Jake up
was heartwrenching :(

Looks like they're quite far into JCoM, so I think it's getting made. Everyone's known about Avatar for years, although it will no doubt be influenced and challenged to get to that standard, and they will probably have to shoot 3D now.

It would be kinda interesting if they made the Na'Vi look asian for the asian markets. Wouldn't be much of a problem to change that stuff since it's all CG.

Not really, but they do similar stuff in video games, and especially cover art. Wouldn't really surprise me if they did that in movies like this, either.
 
You know what else is a good scene? When Jake and Neytiri are

. On my first viewing it was a little weird/awkward, but I appreciated it much more on my second viewing. It really is a nicely done scene.

I know a lot of you guys didn’t feel too much when
Grace
and
Trudy died
, but I haven’t heard much discussion of when
Eytucan (Neytiri’s father) died
. He didn’t have enough screen time for me to actually care.
 
I think when
eytucan died was more dramatic because of Neytiri's reaction more than my connection to the father character. There was so much shit going down and then on top of it her father gets killed.
That whole part of the movie was very emotional for me.

It's a shame the DC won't be in 3D for most of us. I'd love to see the entire thing in theatres.

I mean, have you ever mounted a curb? In Imax, I felt like I was there. Mounting that fucking curb.

Oh yes definitely, I completely agree with you on that one. Seeing Neytiri's reaction and Jake being helpless was pretty sad stuff.

I'm going with TDK.

I have to agree with absolutely how amazing the CG was with expressing emotions. Being honest, It felt like it did reduce the emotional expressions but enhanced it.

That plus the sense of depth, I can not get over the sense of depth this brought. It didn't feel at all like you were watching a screen.

Jake and Grace got disconnected from the Matrix just as Jake was about to try and convince the Navi to gtfo of Home-Tree was cool.
I haven't had one of those "WTF NOOOO" moments in ages. :lol

It’s been mentioned before but when Jake and Neytiri are both
flying with their Banshees
it is indeed a great scene (so is when
Jake is making the bond with it)
, but the moment when Neytiri gets
excited and jumps on her Banshee
– absolute magic!
 
Really glad to hear about the trilogy,
Jake and Neytiri
stories are far from done.
I'm much more intrested in the Avatar sequels then Battle Angel simply because Avatar is Cameron's personal baby and it would be the first time we actually get a whole trilogy from him.

TDK, and i'm not a TDK fanboy or whatever ( i even think BB is better)
But the overall package of TDK is more entertaining for me, storywise i was kind of dissapointed in AVATAR.

I absolutely loved TDK the first time I saw it, but the second viewing (fwiw it's the only film I've ever seen twice at the cinema) just didn't do it for me at all.

Avatar on the other hand, I'm quite confident that I could watch again (and again...) and still love it as if it was all completely new to me.

Will be getting the Blu-Ray for sure when it's out, amazing film.
 
Just got back from Fern Gully Avatar. I don't think I would have liked it as much if I hadn't seen it in 3D. The 3D was amazing. Story was adequate.
