Yeah. He really biffed it with a number of the action cues at the end, which I find myself noticing more and more.

But by the same token, I'm finding a lot of the rest of the music to be increasingly effective. This theme really got to me tonight; perhaps it was because I was so focused on Netiri's character this time around. But every scene this played in got me kinda weepy, especially at the scene from the .gif above.
i love that theme. and i agree, it's really moving. when it plays during the flight scene, its so joyous and uplifting. love it.

I saw it a second time with my girlfriend. She wasn't that interested in seeing it but ended up enjoying it in the end. Although she said she didn't like the ending.

She said none of the humans should have been allowed to stay. Should have kicked them all off including Jake. Harsh, haha.

She didn't really like the 3D because it made her head hurt after too long.

Also how do you know what kind of 3D you were watching? I saw it at two different theaters and the first one seemed to have done a better job. I am not sure if it really was different or if I just wasn't as awed by it the second time but it felt like things popped out more the first time.

Finished my third viewing. I progressed from 2D -> 3D -> IMAX 3D so it visually got better each time. :lol

I have at least one more viewing in me, and I'll contribute to the Japan gross next time. :D

Yeah I am tempted to see it a 3rd time in whatever IMAX theater they have in Osaka. Not sure if it is real or Liemax. What is the difference again?

Look in the OP for differences between the 3D formats.
XpanD is dog shit, I think the OP should also mention the fact that you are getting different aspect ratios based on which format you see.

Holy fuck this thread has gotten big. Never really hit me just how big this got for a Rottenwatch thread.
Maybe it should be renamed Official Avatar thread at this point

Congrats.

I didn't mean it like that, who cares how many posts a thread has. I'm just pointing out what a talking point this film has become. Even among GAF, Rottenwatch threads rarely crack 1000 posts, yet this film has people talking and talking.

Well films rarely cross the $1 billion mark in 17 days. ;)

Haha. I know. I was just joking.

There's no IMAX in Osaka city (besides the one in the port, but they don't have Avatar there I think, and I'm not even sure it's a real IMAX). I went today to Minoh (take the subway, Midosuji line, up to the last station called Senri-chuo, then leave the station and take a shuttle bus that takes you to Minoh, it takes about 10 mins and costs 210 yen.

The IMAX is in the 109 cinema complex, but I suggest you buy it beforehand via internet or you might miss some good seats. I bought the tickets two days ago (watched it yesterday) and got the BEST seats, right in the middle. Dunno if it's real IMAX (it says so in the website) or not, but goddamn it was GREAT and I completely loved the movie.

Here you can check the schedule and buy tickets if you're interested:

http://109cinemas.net/minoh/schedule/timeSchedule.shtml

EDIT - Wops, seems like you've seen the movie twice already and in 3D? Did you watch them in Osaka city? I've searched and only saw the 109 site where they say AVATAR is only available in 4 IMAX in Japan, and I assumed there wasn't any other 3d Theater around here...? I wanna see the movie again, but going up to Minoh is a pain in the ass (I live near Den Den Town, I guess you know where's that).

BTW, I know I'm a few pages late, but for that guy saying the difference between 3D and 2D wasn't that big... ARE YOU KIDDING!? Seriously, You could see how everything had lots of depth except for a few scenes indoors where it was harder to notice, but even then, you could tell there was something different about it.

Dunno if it has anything to do with the kind of theater. I went to an IMAX and sit right in the middle of the theater (well, one row nearer to the screen than the one in the actual middle, but the seat was the one in the exact middle). It looked AMAZING from the very beginning to the very end.

Oh, and I loved Tsu'tey.
It was sad to see him getting killed by those goddamn humans :_(

Yeah I have actually been to the one in senri-chuo when Transformers 2 came out. That was the only one I knew of so I figured they would have it.

Yeah I saw it in 3D twice, once in the Toho Umeda and once in a Toho in Hamamatsu over the new year. It was pretty nice as it was on the biggest screen at the Umeda showing(I think, it was theater 1).

Now I just want to see it in IMAX 3D.

I tried to talk everyone into going to IMAX for the first showing but they always do the stupid thing of timing the movies to end after the last trains(at least by the time you take a cab or shuttle back) so no one wanted to go. Can't blame them as a cab ride all the way back to my place in Morinomiya would cost a fortune from there.

Try to imagine the opening weekend box-office results of Avatar 2. What do you see?

:D

Avatar 2's box office watch wont be anywheres near as fun nor as unusual as Avatar 1's. For starters, the movie is going to open huge, probably setting a new opening weekend record. After that, expect a fairly regular blockbuster run in terms of drops. And Im thinking it probably wont top Avatar 1 WW.

Woah, so there's one in Umeda then? Was the screen any big? If not, I might just go to Minoh again. I went to the one at 13:50. A wee bit too early for me, as I'm used to watch the late show always, but whatever..

I've said it before, but wake me up when they start doing them in people numbers, not money.

You could charge $25 for the next Twilight and have $2 billion in a week.

Yeah I read that part, I just want to know how to figure out which one I saw. You can tell by the glasses?

Yes, you can tell by the glasses. Sunglasses = RealD, square rimmed nightmare glasses = Dolby3D, red crazy scifi glasses = Xpand.

Uhm, I checked the theater I went to, and it says Xpand. But it looked GREAT. What's the actual best technology? These were the glasses I used:

The thing you forgot is that the population also rises with the ticket prices as well as numbers of available theaters around the world.

So yeah, I would say that the number of people that goes to see movies coming out in the future will be a ton more than people having been in the past.

I think you are confused. I saw it in 3d, not 3D IMAX.

But yes the Toho in Umeda does 3D.

Maybe on your experience, but I've watched the movie with Master Image and Xpand, and this last one was superior in every way. Absolutely zero ghosting and great 3D effect and focus with Xpand, can't say the same thing for Master Image.

any youtube link of the piece?

It's not on the soundtrack.

I don't understand the people complaining that it makes the movie seem like a cartoon. THE ENTIRE MOVIE is pretty much a live action Disney animated movie. :P It's not the greatest cue but it does its job.

Sure, but you understand what I'm saying right ?
Even if in 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010 the same number of people see a movie, the box office / gross revenue records, whatever, will be broken.

Especially with the even more expensive 3D tickets now.

"Avatar has become the fastest movie ever to achieve $1bn in ticket sales around the world. "

It's all bullshit.

Bullshit or no bullshit, it's still a billion dollars and it still did it in 17 days. No matter what you think about inflation, that is still fucking impressive. Avatar is pretty much guaranteed to end up in the top 100 tickets sold of all time domestically, which is damn impressive in its own right, but the foreign box office has expanded a lot in recent years and that is where it can make a real killing. I wish BOM provided much, much better foreign statistics than it does, though I understand the difficulties inherent in tracking foreign box office gross.

It's not bullshit. Titanic came out when tickets were only $5 max and still managed the same thing. Just not in 17 days. I think it took 10 weeks to get this high. But really, it just goes to show that there is a massive amount of people going to see this film than any other film this year.

IMO, everything else can GTFO and he should start working on Avatar2 NOW.

I'll begrudgingly accept Battle Angel as well. Begrudgingly.

Every ticket purchased in euro today is also a lot of additional $$$ compared to a few years ago.

I´d love for someone to try and figure out which movie is the highest grossing of all time after inflation AND foreign currency exchange rates (and foreign inflations, of course) considered.

Lol, it´s another GAF discussion about sales, why am I not surprised :D

^ But only if it´s quick to shoot :D

No matter how high the price, masses of people are obviously willing to pay it and that's an achievement in itself. I don't think you can measure the success just with numbers.

Edit: I actually saw people with RealD glasses in the club recently. o_o

By a pretty big margin, I believe it's Gone With The Wind, though if not it's probably something like E.T. or possibly Titanic. In any case, comparing any modern movie to one released at a time when tickets were a nickel each, there was no cheap source of entertainment (or air conditioning) outside the cinema, and movies stayed in theaters for years is kind of pointless.

Top "Avatar" territories overseas were France ($21.3 million on the weekend for a $84.5 million), Germany ($12.3 million, cume $57.2 million), Spain ($10.1 million, cume $47.1 million) and the U.K. ($9.3 million, cume $53 million).

What do you know, it's the french that have really taken a liking for Avatar. :P

LTTP: Finally saw it with my wife. IMAX 3D. The whole shebang.

Story was serviceable, but the direction and tech on display are so monumentally awesome and well-handled it's hard to really give a shit that the story is pretty much just there. Definitely a Star Wars moment in film history, I agree with Ebert on that.

We enjoyed it despite both feeling as if the story wasn't anything special. Which usually kills films for us, but... it's hard to ignore this much sheer money on-screen.

I'd give it an 8 or so. Everyone needs to see it in a good theater though; I can't fathom watching it any other way.

Glad to see it hit $1B this last weekend. I thought it was gonna do $60M this weekend and I low balled the numbers again. :lol
