There will be no peaceful mining agreement. Not when undying greed is the motivator.

Cameron leaves for us what we have collectively left for ourselves due to years of misuse of our home world. The bed we made we have to sleep, or rather "No fate but what we make." WE MADE OUR FATE. Humanity as a collective, doesn't care (even now) how they get their 99 cent hamburgers or gasoline, but only that we get them when want them. I would imagine that in 150 years, no one on Earth would care how we got Unobtainium, only that we get it. Just because Jake "got it"(in regards to respecting the ecosystem on Pandora), most humans probably wouldn't and would have no desire to live on Pandora, by Pandora's rules.

Fact: The movie is about 70% booked for a complete week in advance at all 4 major cinemas in the city of Vienna.

Also mindblowing: i was so tired when watching this that I'll have to rewatch to properly evaluate the movie. But I have good company because so many people I know plan on rewatching :lol

They probably haven't had a continuous presence for that long. In the Cinefex article, they say that Grace's avatar was created 18 years ago. Subtract at least five years for growth/transit, (likely more considering they didn't develop as fast early on) and Grace has been on the planet for less than 13 years.
First contact had to be at least 23 years before the movie, though.
 
Great to hear that the sequels won't be one continuous story. Self-contained is exactly what I wanted and as it should be. One movie should not be dependent on another.

All of Cameron's sequels are self-contained, so that is not surprising at all. He does not believe in cliffhanger endings.

If the sequel does in fact take place on another moon, I can't imagine how Jake and Neytiri would get there. What, do they steal one of the human's ships or something? Plus, why would they take all the time to design every aspect of Pandora only to scrap it in the sequel?

I don't know for 100% if what I'm saying is true, but it's always the Puerto Rico figure missing in BOMs overseas totals. Obviously, BOM could be wrong with the Puerto Rico issue, but I trust them in this case.

Indeed. And we can be spared the cliffhanger garbage of Matrix Reloaded, Pirates 2, hell, pretty much any blockbuster franchise post-LOTR when the trilogy became the "it" thing to do.

That simul-cam is BAD ASS. To be able to shoot a bunch of actors running around an empty room and yet get to see their rendered Avatars running around in Pandora in 3D is insanity.

Watching that featurette makes my head hurt thinking of all the organizing that went into the whole production... I mean it's a big movie, so that in itself requires a lot of work and dedication to all the various production areas, but with all these new technologies that haven't really been tested before...

Cameron must have worked 24/7 for some time...

I love how during Motion Capture they are carrying actual prop replicas of their weapons in the movie, like Wes Studi's Bow, and not just generic sticks or whatever

Edit: BTW, there will be a new Cameron interview in this weeks EW

BTW, according to Amazon and Blu-Ray.com, seems the European Blu-ray of Avatar has been pushed back from April 21st to June 1st

Most likely the US Blu-ray won't be out until June as well I would assume.
 
Seeing that featurette, I can finally understand why it took them two years to get the development process and tech down. I'd assumed it had more to do with the performance capture, but that's practically a footnote next to the virtual and hybrid cameras. Damn.

I imagine the virtual camera is really helpful not just for the director, but also the actors, making the capture volume much less abstract.

I agree. It's doing quite well, but Japan's share of Avatar's worldwide gross is actually quite low, when Japan usually is the #2 or #3 country. I see Japan eventually getting up there, though.

I booked my fifth and probably final theater viewing for this Saturday night, and the theater was already 50% pre-booked for the 8PM show. That's also when I plan on picking up the programs for GAFers who asked for it.

Every year Japan becomes an increasingly poor market for Hollywood films (except for Pixar, but technically it's not Hollywood anyway) and the exchange rate fluctuates a ton, which significantly affects dollar comparisons between movies released in different years. Even then, Japan is still generally one of the top few contributors to international grosses, but the combination of the emergence of markets like China and Russia (both of which have a huge upside, particularly the former), the weakened dollar, Avatar's simply being a monster in virtually every country, competition from Japan's own film industry (which is a much, much bigger factor than it is in most other countries), and the Japanese market's overall contraction, it's not clear how long it will remain that way. That said, I think studios receive a higher percentage of the gross from Japanese cinemas than those in many other countries (particularly China, where IIRC governmental restrictions allow them to take only something like a 15% cut?), so it will continue to play an important part in studios' bottom lines for a long time to come.

Cameron was actually absent for months at a time during the development of the shooting pipeline. Rob Legato doesn't get nearly enough credit.

Jim here. I just got a rather cool inside update from the very same source who gave me the video clip of AVATAR's footage from Comic Con 2009. Time to mull over some rumors and clarifications direct from one of my top, top sources!

- AVATAR 2 will definitely be helmed by James Cameron and no one else, contrary to rumors saying otherwise. The story arcs that are being developed for potential sequels are EPIC. More info coming soon!

- What's on AVATAR's Blu-ray disc? It will obviously be SPECTACULAR! The best of its kind with in depth features, extended and deleted scenes - the movie will be much longer because of it. We know he left a lot of scenes off the theatrical cut to make length commitments. Further, most of these additional scenes will be in the first half of the movie, for example future Earth. Finally it will also clear up a few plot holes like how Tsu'tey got his headset towards the end of the movie, etc.
