It's lackluster. It isn't a "movie movie". Such as Star Trek,IB or Avatar. There isn't anything signifying a movie experience. And no real ambition is shown. It's like reading a book. But the book was probably better.

I don't know what you mean by "movie movie."

Sure it's not a blockbuster, and sure it's oscar bait, but damn if it isn't good.

Reitman may have his head up his ass (like Tarantino and his 35mm thing), but Up In The Air is fanfuckingtastic.

Dolby3D doesn't use tinted glasses*, I watched Avatar in D3D once and I really had little to no issues. The colors were fine, the brightness levels were acceptable and there was little ghosting. The 3D depth of the picture is virtually the same as RealD, stuff actually seems to pop out a little bit more in Dolby. The one serious difference are the uncomfortable glasses. I didn't even get any headaches in Avatar, which I had gotten before with Dolby3D. It really depends on the movie. :P

RealD IS better, it has a crisper and brighter picture and the glasses are almost unnoticeable, and I already wear prescription ones. But if you got no choice Dolby will be fine. Also, it will depend on a case by case basis. I've watched Avatar in two different RealD theaters and the image looked noticeably better in one theater compared to the other.

*they do have these weird colored crystal thingies inside them, but once you're looking at the screen it's completely fine, if the color wheel in the projector is well calibrated of course. :P It's nothing like the anaglyph crap.

Tarantino said he will stop making movies if they stop using 35mm. That makes me sad.

Tarantonto says a lot of crap. He'll come around once he realizes the benefits of digital.

Fuck 35mm projection is all I can say. I hate the scratches, the dirt, the unsteady image and the uneven lighting. Digital for the win.

Leaving star trek, Avatar, or IB ( especially IB and Avatar) it felt like that moment where you're like 5 years old and you see your first great film courtesy a cool older brother, uncle or father ( mine happened to be TGTBTU).

I have to hand it to Reitman though,of all the oscar bait, Up in the air was the best this year, no contest.

I like it. They both have their place.

Avatar broke $66 Million in Japan already. Still behind China and South Korea's grosses, though.

Hoping it'll break $100 Million in three weeks or so.

Around $650 million seems like a good bet to me around now, could go somewhat higher or lower depending on a few things. How the awards season goes is a big one. It also seems that a number of theater chains, in recognition of the uniqueness of the film, are offering theaters the option to continue to show Avatar on 3D screens during matinee and late-night showings even after Alice in Wonderland's debut (which was supposed to take all its screens) as well as keep it going full-time on a limited number of 3D screens. A lot of it depends on whether it can sustain the ridiculously soft drops it's been seeing so far--my gut tells me it will, and of course even if it doesn't it should still surpass Titanic fairly comfortably, but strong holds could theoretically propel it past the $700 million mark. Which, incidentally, is over a 9x multiplier, with 8x+ pretty much in the bag: I don't think even the most ardent ticket-sales-first man could find much to complain about there, considering that in this day and age a tentpole release with over a 3x multiplier is usually considered to have good legs.

One thing to take into account I just read a report on boxofficemojo that theaters are extending their contract for 3D avatar by 10 weeks, into April. Which means Alice will lose 300-400 screens now probably as theaters keep some screens for avatar. This movie is going to be in theaters longer than we thought which makes 650+ domestic likely IMO

Tim Burtowned.

Weekend actuals just came out. $54 million for the 4 day weekend and 42.8 for the 3 day. Avatars 3 day drop was roughly 45% (maybe a bit off just doing the math in my head) from it's FIRST weekend. Almost every blockbuster drops 50-60% in it's second weekend... Also beat titanics 5th weekend record which was $30m and MLK weekend record which was $46m. I do believe it's 42 still beats any January opening, but ghalleon can correct me if I'm wrong since I'm guessing (at work).

I'm guessing a $32 million next weekend. Movie just won't stop.

i just watched it this weekend finally! on imax 3d, even if i didnt like the movie, that still was the best movie theater experience i have ever had. i really felt like a kid again. and being so interested in space and other worlds, that was a wet dream.

Avatar got 10 millions entries in France. That means that 1 out of 6 people in France came to see the movie (or so, I'm including the people going twice or moreà, it's a record for an US movie. 70% of the entries were 3D.

Experts say Avatar can scores 12 millions.

And I'm still laughing very hard at UGC (a theater brand) saying " No, were are not investing in 3D, spectators don't want this gadget " and I'm watching them crying now because they missed the Avatar cash train sooo badly :lol

It seems like...you liked the movie.

I've seen this film four times this winter. Absolutely fantastic experience.
Already planning on investing in a 3D HDTV this summer so I can enjoy it and other 3D films/videogames properly.

So the 8th Annual VES (Visual Effects Society) just announced their nominations for this years awards. Avatar is nominated for 11 awards (cannot win them all due to being nominated multiple times in some categories though). I am going to quote which catgeories its nominated in below along with its competition, though I think it will win pretty much every category it's up for. http://www.visualeffectssociety.com/group/ves-member/ves-announces-nominees-8th-annual-ves-awards

As previously announced, this year James Cameron will be honored with the VES Lifetime Achievement Award and Dr. Ed Catmull with the Georges Méliès Award for pioneering.

The 8th Annual VES Awards will take place on Feb. 28, 2010, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, CA.

New feature on the Performance Capturing used in Avatar. It starts off with some stuff we've all seen on youtube and there is some repeating of some of the youtube videos in it ,but there is a lot of side-by-side videos we have not seen and a lot of behind the scenes footage (including Cameron talking about the film) I haven't seen in any of the videos linked yet...Really amazes me what they did to make this film every time.

http://www.cinemablend.com/new/More-Performance-Capture-Behind-The-Scenes-From-Avatar-16623.html

Edit: Lots more repeating in it than I thought =( However there are a few new behind the scenes things, but not nearly as much as I hoped.

Just quickly, because I'm at uni and have to run to class. There is a new The Envelope roundtable video with the nominated globe directors over at LATimes.com and Cameron gives a great story on how he convinced a producer about the script changes he wanted to make. :lol

After reading the Cinefex article, Avatar deserves every award it's nominated for and then some for VFX (or really any other technical category), so this isn't all that surprising.

Watched it again yesterday. In the same place here in The Netherlands, Avatar is still sold out..

I think I have never seen this happen before, you still have to reserve tickets and it even was a working day.

Amazing, I still loved the movie.

I just noticed something . . . is there a reason why Grace's Avatar has a human nose?

Like, people are saying either its because she has one-of-if-not-the first Avatar before they out everything ooooorrr they simply wanted he Avatar to look more like her. Its there a correct answer to this? And if the 2nd one then is there a reason why they wanted that?

What is bolded is the reason when explained outside of the film (they felt Grace's avatar having a Na'vi nose took away the resemblance to young Sigourney Weaver, and they wanted to preserve that). One could make an argument that the first reason you put out is the reason inside the film, though I don't believe that's been officially commented on canon-wise.

Knowing?! KNOWING?! What? KNOWING????? :(

I don't know if this was discussed before, or even if it's worth discussing, but I noticed an interesting feature in the italian magazine Focus, where they compare Avatar to 'Aida degli alberi' (Aida of the trees), an animated movie from 2001. Since I haven't (yet) seen either I really can't say anything on the subject, however I did also listen to an italian radio show about cinema a few days back, where they talked about this ... and they all seemed pretty convinced that the guys behind Avatar saw Aida and read the 'making of' book, which apparently contains a lot of concept art, and were inspired.

I can see a bit of similarity, but when I got to Neytiri on the banshee, naw man that's just grasping for similarity. But otherwise, I can't say either way. The bansee quad wings, sure, but then the other plant concepts shown? You could probably grab a concept art book for something else and find similar plant designs shown here.
