I don't know if it occurred to me before now just how immensely quotable the script is.

The sound design during the destruction of hometree is nothing short of amazing.

In IMAX, every time a missile hits the tree, it creates a sonic boom that shakes the whole theater whilst sending a visual shock wave onscreen.

I try to replicate it at home but it's just not the same.

Easily amongst my Top 5 theatre experiences ever. Probably Jurassic Park, FOTR, Casino Royale and Inglourious Basterds would round out that list. First viewings for all. People were fucking HYPED coming out of the movie. I obviously had no idea it was going to be the highest grossing movie of all time, but I did know after opening night that it was going to get carried a VERY long way by excellent word of mouth.

Not to mention when the Valkyrie shuttle goes down. Now THAT is how you do an explosion, Mr. Bay.

Crazy thing was that it just stayed on the charts week after week. Even when the snow storm took out half of North America it still managed to be number one.

Watching it all unfold was surreal. Especially since going into the release date, most of the press from the trailer was negative. No one expected Dances with Smurfs to even sell let alone be the highest grossing movie of all time.

I actually bought my tickets on AVATAR day, months before the movie released. Still have the stub inside a dvd case. Everyone I knew who went to see it thought it was an amazing movie. Even my grandma who can't sit still for more than an hour for any movie, came out of AVATAR praising it.
 
when avatar came out i lived in tahoe. i took a 10 hour trainride to san francisco so i could see it in imax and stayed with friends. i mean, the primary reason for the trip was to see my friends, but goddamn the entire trip there i couldnt think of anything but seeing avatar in imax the next day.
 
Yeah, I remember opening weekend was like $77M domestic, and "bomba" was starting to be thrown around. And then it made $75M it its second weekend. And $70M in its third. After that third weekend I knew this was going to be something special. Blockbusters don't drop 2% between weekends. They just DON'T.

Quaritch with the explosion behind him. How the camera lingers to let you take it all in.

An iconic shot for one of the best villains in the last decade. (I am aware that this is the Dragon and not the Valkyrie)

No, that is the Dragon Gunship - which is also awesome. But the best explosion imo is the Valkyrie Shuttle. An explosion that rocks the Dragon Gunship when its still hundreds of meters above.

Also, one of the best 3D in the movie is actually right in the beginning. I mean, look at it! This shot conveys the depth wonderfully.

If you go find my very first review, you'll see that I've always praised that cryo-vault sequence in its power to immediately signal this as the 3D game-changer.
 
oh yeah. within the first few seconds io seeing the 3d i knew it was something completely world changing. that shot of his eye.
 
Is the director's cut any better than the theatrical version? I saw this film when it first came out. I loved the use of 3D, but didn't really like the film too much. I'm recovering from tonsil surgery, so I've got the time to revisit the film. So DC: yay or nay?

if you did not like the film than nothing much to add. It was only for 3d imax. Story was standard affair so do not watch for that. It will look good in terms of colors if you want that. There is extra hunting scene and one earth scene i believe.

Erm, there are more scenes in the Extended Cut than the special edition that was rereleased in IMAX theaters. Definitely worth it.

Dammit, reading through the conversation, this is what I was going to add.

I love that shot because of how focus was used to shift our, um, focus into the foreground of the picture. It was like a little training moment for the eye, pushing the picture out gradually. It was the shot where I really felt the 3D effect and its potential.

And then the casket opens and we get the shot of the entire chamber you guys posted earlier. Breathtaking.

Ya but since he did not like the film and liked 3d it is better for him to hunt down the 3d bluray if he wishes. The story added is no important but different people different taste
