Rottenwatch: AVATAR (82%)

Came back from my IMAX Sydney session.

Scullibundo is on the money; being Avatar IS an event film. Watching this on dvd/bluray will just seem a waste of time.

This was the first time i've been impressed by CGI since watching Jurassic Park in cinemas back 15-16years ago. Whereas all the films with CGI i've seen felt lifeless/dull/monotonous, Avatar was the complete opposite.

The film itself in a traditional sense (plot, dialogue, soundtrack, etc) will probably not hold up when breaking it down; but goddman is the journey amazing.

LIGHT SPOILER
My favourite scene and the scene in which I knew we were in for something FUCKING special was
when Jake awakes from cryo-sleep and all the medics etc are free-floating - perhaps one of the coolest shots/scenes I've ever seen and definitely memorable.
Oh god yes. That sequence was completely fucking amazing. Also everything that involved the air creatures (banshees?); where my jaw would just be open in awe the whole time.

well, who's to say that a big tv + bluray release with proper glasses isn't going to do the job? Its a james cameron movie - if this does big box office, expect the bluray release to be an event.

Exactly. This film will do for Bluray what it is doing for cinema - taking 3D to the next level.

Like this, yes. The 3D is never distracting in this film. It absolutely adds to the experience and I can't imagine how disappointing a 2D screening would be after having seen it in 3D.

Ive only been saying this since I started posting in this thread. SEE THIS IN 3D PEOPLE!
Seems like such an obvious arguement.

If Coraline can be realeased in 3D, Im sure Avatar can too.

Even those of us who cant or reduced to migraine driven wrecks after 20 mins of '3d'?

no thanks.

well that's different of course...im talking about the people that refuse to watch it in 3D because they think it will distract from the actual story or something silly like that.

Fuck I can't sleep. I can't stop thinking about the film.

My musings on it completely change in my head.

Justinian - the characters are definitely underdeveloped - just feels like they've had scenes cut out. This definitely needs a director's cut.

I've been thinking again on where I would rank it (thinking simply of what I would want to rewatch 10 years from now on bluray) out of Cameron's films and I think I might put it just below True Lies. The reason being, that I imagine the incredible experience of it by then can wear off and whilst the setting is amazing and the action is beyond incredible, it all comes down to characters for me and in my head I keep seeing Arnold smile that Harry Tasker smile and I can't imagine AVATAR's characters keeping me coming back as much as Arnold and Paxton in True Lies.

I plan to see AVATAR at least two more times in the cinema. I can't wait and its going to be hard to find another IMAX session soon (ie: this weekend :( )

Damn these reviews from AusGAF are getting me very excited for tonight!
8 more hours to go :D

I'll post my impressions after I see it tonight, but I'm seeing it again on Thursday, and then again on Friday, so by Saturday morning I'll know how it stands up to multiple viewings :lol

I'm seeing it in less than 8 hours too. :D

:lol

I love that.

What, I was under the impression that 3D on Blu-ray not involving red/blue "glasses" required a 3D capable display?
It does, or it will should I say. There are no dual channel stereoscopic movies on BluRay yet, nor players that can play them.

With this being my first 3D movie, will wearing contact lenses take away some of the experience?
No, but wearing glasses and then the 3D glasses over it is a bit uncomfortable, obviously. I should wear contacts when going to see 3D films.

Coraline's home release in 3D is that wanky old 3D. Avatar will be released in 3D on BluRay I'm sure, but you'll need shutter glasses and a 120Hz TV or a polarized screen. There is only one polarized TV commercially available at the moment.

Not only is a 120hz TV required, it needs to be one that can accept a 120 fps signal, an.d nearly all current 120hz TVs do NOT support that.

I meant 120Hz input yeah. Although we don't really know exactly what will be required. Basically it's probably going to come down to needing HDMI 1.4, and they might just make it so every HDMI 1.4 TV also supports 120Hz input.

QuadHD is coming with HDMI 1.4 too, TVs are going to get crazy expensive next year I suspect.

All Mitsubishi DLP tvs are 3D ready as well. I bought mine last year and the picture quality is just the best I've seen all around.

But they're shutter 3D, not polarized. There are lots of that method yeah.

I'll be able to hook up the 3D Vision from Nvidia to it. As far as I can tell, the 3D effect is virtually the same.

It's not nearly as good. But it is way cheaper, so I guess for the cash it's a fine option. Although it doesn't have HDMI 1.4, so it won't work beyond video games I suspect.

Okay, I saw it too. It was okay I guess. The story is not groundbreaking and you can certainly guess where it's going. However, the film is certainly a visual feast. There are times when the CG is a bit obvious but I think it's probably because I have nothing to compare some of the elements on that world to the world of ours. Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver were pretty good as the leads. Ditto with Zoe Saldana. I'd see again with friends just to see their reaction but after that I'd wait for the DVD/Blu-ray.

On that note, I wonder what Sony is doing with 3D on PS3? They did say 3D was coming to all PS3s, yet they only support HDMI 1.3a. How did the 3D Wipeout demo work?

I'm guessing it may never support 3D Blu-ray films due to lack of HDMI 1.4?

Also, according to Wikipedia, the 2D version of Avatar is cropped to an even wider aspect ratio than the proper 3D version. What nonsense is this? That just sounds like Pan&Scan for 4:3 in that the image is being cropped!

(Maybe the people choosing to watch it in 2D deserve it or something :P)

Yeah, they haven't said anything about 3D films. 1.3 has the bandwidth for 720p 120Hz so they can have games in 3D. It's not just Sony though, the 360 has Avatar in 3D like Sony. They just haven't bothered 'announcing' it.

But I'm interested in how they're implementing 3D. And I was hoping by some gypsy magic they would be able to support 3D films. :/ (I don't care that much about games in 3D... not yet anyway.)

Scullibundo's review of Avatar, never thought I'd see the day.

Anyway I found out that Bahrain has a 3D cinema for Avatar and that it's showing now, the problem is I usually go with my family there and the 3D cinema is at some mall we all hate. Plus my family is an anti-Sci-Fi family, even though my brothers all love Cameron's Terminator flicks and Titanic. Ah well I'll try to go alone.

Maybe they could downscale the two streams to 720p, then in theory they'd have the bandwidth for 3D film. No idea if they intend to do anything like that, or even if they could.

Just saw this in RealD at Indooroopilly, Queensland. Fucking incredible. The action, pacing, and oh my fucking god at Pandora at night. Your minds will be blown. There is one fucking cool little creature too that I loved. Everything just fits in this film.

Cameron is back!

I can't decide whether to try the 3D or not. I'm away on holiday without a true IMAX around, so the options are regular RealD or LieMAX (actually, is there a difference?) or just 2D. I'm really torn. But I could decide on a midnight show if I do 3D...

Un-fucking-believable!!

Nearly a complete standing ovation at the end. Such a vibrant theatre atmosphere, people, hell... complete strangers were just giddy about shit they just saw, often turning around to anyone to say "holy shit, that was brilliant". So many great BIG 3D "wow" moments, but the implementation was also subtle and understated all the way through, just a really great mix, no stupid gimmicks to be found here.

Man! Last 20-30 minutes is just absurdly awesome, I mean forgetta bout it.

a couple of my friends said it was amazing but found it hard in parts (like the internal/human scenes) as the camera would be focused on certain points, and if you wanted to look elsewhere in the shot it would sort of whip you out of focus.

It took me a bit to get used to but after 20 mins I was pretty much in Pandora, esp after it became dark.
